  • Introducing the new edition ICON, The Old School. We will now offer our FJ in two different design packages, our famous "New School" and now the "Old School", designed to be more retro. Same engineering, but a whole new approach to the styling! This one also packs a new engine, the Cummins 2.8T diesel! Debuting as this video goes live at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas!

I just died and gone to heaven. I grew up with a CJ5, CJ7, then a 66" Bronco. I've had 7 different Wranglers since college. I've always loved the LR Defender for it look and utility, but my budget could never justify a vehicle that would spend more time in the shop then I cared to think about - and not having a second vehicle to get me to work when it was in the shop. But now - this is what I need to save for. I have loved my Jeeps, but THIS is a game changer in how I see beauty and function in a vehicle. This Old School FJ is the perfect combination of utility and aesthetic. ICON creates works of art that should be driven every day. And the integration of the modern conveniences while maintaining the vehicle's soul is genius. THIS would be my perfect vehicle for living in the foothills of the Cascades. A perfect "from shore to city to mountain" transport. As a designer AND outdoorsman, this satisfies both sensibilities. Now I just need to rob a bank or something....

Hey Jonathan... Being an old school guy having worked at Toyota in the very early days with Norm Lean, Max Jamison, Lee Sawyer only to mention a few. We drove the '69 and '70 FJ40s on the Jeepers Jamboree several times. You have hit a home run! This "new" "old school" brings back so many memories. Love the turbo diesel engine. Want to buy one soon to use here in the Western Rockies of Colorado on our ranch. People would be envious just seeing me in town with your great creation. Keep up the great work. Leo

Very nice! Glad to see the return of the old school!
For the bi-fold tail gate in the original version you can open one half without opening the spare carrier. Here you puted the "first" half behind the spare so you can't open at all the tail gate with the spare in place.
Small detail but my entire childhood I rode in my father's FJ this way so it tickles me!

Jonathan you mentioned "Cummins in their infinite wisdom" the 2.8 Crate project was the work of one man with a vision within Cummins who was swiming upstream in the corporate world for years and his tenacity (like yourself) paid off! We are indebted to him, I am considering a 2006 or so Ram1500 Quadcab for one of these 2.8s, I think it would be the balls!

Jon, to give you an outside perspective on the wheels: I think that color looks great in the video, but if I were to overthink it I would do a blasted/bare metal look with a brushed finish to match the eggshell finish on the body, that's thinking outside the box if I had to pick an alternative other than black. Black would work very well too and doesn't get old to look at. Something maybe on the same part of the spectrum that the body is on only darker could work too. That said this 2 door manual diesel with jump seats is exactly how I'd ask you guys to build an FJ. Love this design.

Looks great! I'm a fan of the original 3B engine, so it's nice to see you producing diesels!
    Suggestions:
    - Tidy up the routing of the lines in the engine bay (I'm sure you would anyway with this being the prototype)
    - Not a fan of the mirrors, would replace with 87902-60030 arms and 87901-55011 convex mirrors
    - Something looks "bug eyed" about the headlights, not sure if it's just that they're missing the chrome bezel/rings or if they're sticking out too far
    - For the "old school" look, the early cruisers had "landcruiser" embossed in the bezel, maybe you could add something similar?
    - Stainless/chrome body would look great on the indicators (turn signals)
    - OEM style bonnet/hood liner helps to quieten the diesel rattle
    - OEM style fog lamps look great and are still available PN 81210-60010
    - If the Cummins crate motor still has the plastic sump....

Would love to put one of these engines in a TJ but stupid 25 year rule this country has. We have useless laws for stupidity like this but no laws for something like limiting healthcare costs. Not to get political. The rant is for the 25 year rule.

As much as I like and respect ICON products and its incredible handcraft quality and engineering, I never liked a Toyota 4x4 with a Chevy or a Cummins engine. I don't know why ICON did not use a Toyota diesel engine. The 1HZ is practically indestructible, slow yes, but also there are several Toyota's Turbo L4s and V8 diesels to choose. Keeping everything under the Toyota's name that everybody trusts worldwide could be convenient.
In Costa Rica we had Toyota FJ40s diesels since the early 70s they are just simple to repair, reliable and thrifty.
Believe me they are still there in the streets and farms almost all had a rough life... all of them with Toyota engines.

I too would like to buy a crate landcruiser 6 cylinder diesel, with mechanical injection so I could run it on SVO if I so choose. The common rail engines need a dual tank and complicated burn pattern computer map as part of a kit from Germany. I'd rather use something very simple to repair and maintain...myself! But I guess for a one off conversion I intend to carry out (1948 Austin K2 Truck) I CAN do the junkyard / wrecking yard thing.

    • @MiguelGarcia-vj7oo

Daniel Curtin what was the issue on the vw diesel??

    • @danielcurtin7616
      @danielcurtin7616 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Miguel Garcia the VW is fine in a Jetta, but for any application with a trailer hitch one might actually want to tow something. The Cummins 2.8 is better but I’d love to know if the Cummins 5.0 would fit. that much torque and your towing limitations will be more structural (suspension, brakes, frame, and hitch) than engine related. After all Cummins does sell the same basic engine to mercury marine, so they are open to seeing it in other applications.

    • @danielcurtin7616
      @danielcurtin7616 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Max Strong I don’t think expensive is that big an issue for the demographic that actually buys these things. Sure it’s an issue for those of us who drool over the TH-cam videos, and wonder what this guy would do with a 1954 Cadillac series 75 and duffel bag full of cash. But for those who have the duffel bags of cash is really more about aesthetics and performance.

    • @honestguy7764

i think the side mirrors work in that color because of the grill and the front bumper. it all works together. it gives it that old school flavor as you said. it looks old. freaking love this model. well i love everything you've built so far to be fair. can't wait to own one. as soon as i win the lottery i'd build a diesel/hybrid 4x4 thriftmaster. :) that would be awesome.

I have been waiting for this for a LONG time....I stood in line to buy the Mercedes Diesel when it was re-introduced back into the US in 2005, so yes, I am a big diesel fan. I laughed a little at the color scheme, but only because it is what I would design. I have beige furniture, beige rug, hell, I even have a beige dog, but I count on you to add a little extra color, so with that, yes, black mirrors, and maybe a little less beige. I so SO pleased to see you get rid if the F! (Thanks). All in all it looks like a great package. Thanks for putting this together...now let's work on the price. (Yeah I know the spiel) PS Ok, so maybe 6 brake calipers are ok. I saw how the parking brake works on the Rolls/Jay video, and still not a fan of 6, but I understand.

I like mirrors that match the bumpers and grill or the body color, they're not a major design focus so let them blend in with other things

I really like it. Although I may take it a step further with a stamped bezel and the early round tail lights if I were in your shoes. Oh, and I have to have my kick vents.
    Have fun at SEMA.

Also meant to say I'm surprised you haven't made OE looking knobs and blend the ARB switches in with the rest of them on the dash. Perhaps even make a custom switch where you can turn it to engage the compressor, then a 2 position pull switch built onto the same knob for rear, and front and rear positions for the lockers? That way you only have to add one extra knob. Not sure if a switch like that even exists, just thinking out loud.

I think the mirrors look great with the color scheme. But guess it's who ever owns it and what they like!

I'm an older enthusiat and chrome would be my first choice. I would chrome the grill shell, bumpers and mirrors. I also think brushed stainless would also be a nice choice too. If you went with brushed stainless then all the exterior body bolts should match.

A great truck, Jonathon, not much I would alter, other than the price, but if you lowered it to what I could afford you would be out of business rapidly. Well done and keep up these excellent vids, they keep the " I want" hormones glowing.

Ever since you dropped the Willy's CJ3b, I have been hoping you would come up with an alternative, stripped down, old school, minimalist, 4x4, as you called it a "FlipFlop". This is the closest yet. If I could ever afford one of your dream creations, I would have a better chance at an awesome flip flop that I could keep in my garage, never have a top on it and hose it off. Continue the great work Jonathan.

I agree, loved the Icon Willys CJ3b and this is in the same vein. The off road Flip Flop.
