Jason is one of the best songwriters of the last 20+ years imo... sorry to pull that one on you, but it's worth it.

I mean, he just is. I've listened to anybody that can tell a story with rhyming words like Jason. I used to run around with his uncle and he always said Jason was gonna be a star. But he was talking about his musical ability. I think the songwriting ability even took him by surprise. Jesus I wish I could write like that.

Jason Isbell is the greatest songwriter of his generation. So glad he is finally getting the recognition he deserves.

One of his more recent songs is called “If We Were Vampires” that is a love song written from a perspective that many people overlook. Other people have named other great songs to check out, too. Jason is definitely an elite songwriter who can destroy with words.

My favorite lyricist of all time. His songs are very personal yet universal to everyone. His songs paint a picture. Try "Live Oak" or "Yvette" or gosh anything by him. All good stuff.
Most powerful lyrics in this one to me are "surrounded by her family I saw that she was dying alone." It's true. It's something we all will have to experience ourselves, no matter how much support we have.

60's had Dylan, 70's-2000's had Prine, we have Isbell. He is the master of music.

I lost my Dad and my Grandma to cancer. Also lost a good friend, this song makes me cry everytime. The person with cancer can't share the trip thru cancer with you so they die alone.

no matter how you die, you die alone. You’re the only that goes when you do.

Thank you for choosing this song. I'm new to the channel but if you haven't already, please react to other Jason's songs. They're all genuinely written. My dude just paints sad but beautiful portraits with rhyming words.

Never heard of him before, but I'll be looking for more of his stuff! One of the great things about your channel is that you're willing to react to songs that have relatively low views, so we get a chance to hear some great performers that we may have somehow missed. Gives us the chance to learn along with you.

I highly recommend the entire Southeastern album. It was his 1st solo album after recovery from alcoholism and there's a thread of that throughout. Also, some off his newer albums like "If We Were Vampires" and "Dreamsicle"...just too many good ones to mention here. I have never been a fan of country, but that guy opened my mind to it.
Agree that these reaction vids can intro new artists. :)

I was put off by his use of "fucked her" the first time I heard this. I realized after getting more accustomed to his writing that he doesn't use any word by accident. He wanted to make the distinction between what they are now compared to what it would have been in their past. It would have been a cheap throwaway incident that would have just been a complication.

Sorry in advance. Don't attack me, y'all 🙃 I'm going to be one of those people, but I just haven't connected with practically any of the country music I've heard thus far which is admittedly not a whole lot. Johnny Cash is pretty cool though... Cliche, I know. Having said that, I've heard about Jason Isbell and recently checked out his appearance on NPR's TinyDesk series, but, again, I just wasn't able to connect to it. But this song, for some reason, clicked almost instantly. What a beautiful song! I think I'll try again with him because if his other music is anything like this then I'm definitely missing out. Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks.
