      Shannon has to stop taking team attendance reports at face value. Teams do not report actual attendance - they report tickets distributed. "Distributed" means not just ticket buyers but also the massive numbers of tickets left over every game that are given to charities, radio stations, corporate groups, players and staff. Teams report official attendance to the NHL, but the public never sees those numbers.

    Personally I like the balanced schedule. I was never a fan of the days where a star player in the other conference would play against my team once in a season and maybe have 1 home date every 2-3ish years. Everyone should have a chance to see all the leagues players against their team on home ice

    33 team league - 3 divisions of 11. Top team gets into the playoffs automatically (3). 2-5 and 3-4 play a play-in game. Winner makes the playoffs (6). Losers play seed 6 and 7 respectively in another play in. Winner makes the playoffs (6). Last team in the playoffs is whomever has the most points of the losing teams in the play in. The Arena Football leagues are a good example of businesses struggling to make money and be successful.
    I liked it when the season started in early October (doesn't have to be the 1st or 2nd of October, but it should start around Canadian Thanksgiving. Season ends around the first weekend of April, maybe Easter weekend, Stanley Cup is awarded before the middle of June, which gives players 1-2 weeks to rest and the winning team to celebrate before the NHL Awards, ASW is back in January, Trade Deadline is back to the last day of February/first day of March).
    What I'd like to see the NHL do (and I know it's likely never going to happen with Bettman and Daley involved) is get rid of the conferences and have just the 4 divisions, 1 in each corner of the continent. Each team plays everyone outside of their division twice (one home and one away), and the remaining games within their own division. What this will allow is East and West being the two main brackets for the playoffs one year, North and South the next year, and alternate (diagonal works, but after the 2021 playoffs where Vegas played Montreal in the semi-finals, I don't think that's ideal outside of the Cup Finals).

    A lot gets said about the playoff scheduling, but if you look at history, June 24th isn't that late relative to other seasons, even pre-pandemic. The length of the playoffs themselves has remained fairly consistent since going to 4 rounds of best of 7 in 1987. The fact that people are only complaining abut it now is odd to me honestly.
    Part of the way it is now is also impacted by the bye-week that is part of the CBA, and also the television deals. Turner and ESPN have both the rights to the NHL and NBA playoffs, so some of the prolonged scheduling is ESPN / Turner wanting to have the products not compete against each-other on the same night (more towards the later rounds), which makes sense.
    While I don't disagree that the league could start in September, the notion that the season lasts too long is crazy to me. Re: some fans saying they need to go back to a 70 game season lol.

  • @closethockeyfan5284
    @closethockeyfan5284 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    They schedule around bigger leagues. The NFL is the biggest so need not schedule around anyone. NBA is second, so likely schedules around NFL but doesn't get noticed because NFL teams play once a week. MLB is a different time of year for the most part and most definitely ended weekend World Series games in the afternoon to avoid competing with college and pro football.

  • @Bum_Hip

    Not to put too fine a point on it, but from a capacity standpoint percentage, 100% attendance in Utah, will be the same as 100% in Arizona. Sounds like they are not reporting raw accumulated butts in seats. That number will likely be higher.

    As a baseball fan who has been to Marlins Park numerous times, I think it would handle a hockey game very well. Plus it might be their first sell out in probably a decade. Even in the more lean years in Florida, I am pretty sure The Panthers outdrew the Marlins. That’s pretty amazing as baseball has twice as many games, and over 10k more capacity.

    Max Power is one of the best hockey player or sports athlete name ever.
    Thanks for summarizing the press conference for us. The 4 Nations Cup is meh to me since it's a warmup tournament and a $ grab. Olympics best on best or a consistent series of world cups would be more intriguing.
    Players who are charged shouldn't be allowed to play, similar as Trump shouldn't be able to run for presidency while in jail.
    (31x2)+(7x2)=62+14=76 games. So a team plays all other teams twice (home and away) + playing the 7 divisional opponents twice more home and away and still play less games than now. Start the season earlier.

  • @forgottenfamily
    @forgottenfamily 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Regarding the 4 nations cup: I don't think it was a scheduling problem as much as a logistics problem of organizing things
    Regarding the Max Chambers thing: so the thing about Steve Dangle's report that I saw was that a lot of reporters had seen it but were not confident enough to run it. Steve probably didn't have the journalism foundation to recognize the flaws nor realize how far they were. The thing that struck me was when they said the salary cap was 30M. There was a 0% chance that they'd be able to build revenue quickly enough to justify that so either someone was willing to lose a heck of a lot of money or this was an aspiration.

      They want the final played in June because May is sweeps month. The ratings in May set the commercial fees on US network TV for the next season. Since hockey is a poor ratings draw on prime time US TV, if the finals are played in May, no games on the networks. In June, the poor ratings don’t matter, so the networks don’t mind carrying a Cup final game in prime time. If you have any question about why certain things are done a certain way in any sport, the answer is always “TV”.

    I like the Balanced schedule.. but at the same time growing up in the 80's with the very unbalanced schedule there.. the rivalries where huge. I think you need to find a balance.. maybe keep 4 divs.. but rather than the 2 conferences being locked in.. you rotate that other division in the conference. So rather than an east vs west thing.. rotate the other division you see.. so rather than being in the east and rarely seeing west teams... this year the met conferences with the pacific and atlantic with central.. then swap the following year with the met with central and Atlantic with pacific and keep rotating them around.. don't call them east and west, go back to Prince of Wales and Clarence Campbell names... I think the only real change needed for LTIR... Make 1 day per year.. just before the season begins where LTIR is NOT available and you have to be under the cap. I like 3 days before opening day,. then you can move players to LTIR after 24 hours but for that 24 hours you have to be under the cap... then you can go pick up players that are still unsigned... that will stop this stashing guys on LTIR to use later when you have to count them.

    So the GMs are gonna have to risk looking like absolute idiots to the public if they qualify their charged HC 2018 players for rights retention... If I understand that right then I don't think we see anyone qualified for optics alone.

      That and honestly all the players are replaceable. Some are better than others but there isn’t anyone apart of that case who is a must have player in my opinion. A GM can go out and find a comparable replacement without any of the negative PR.

  • @Stango42
    @Stango42 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think a 4 team expansion would make sense. Three divisions per conference, six teams per division. Teams play the opposing conference and opposing divisions twice (1 home 1 away) and play their own division five times (2 home 2 away 1 alternating). That's only 3 more games at 85 and could make divisions more exciting.

    I know this will never happen because the owners don't want to give up the revenue, and it may be a distinct minority opinion among fans. But I would not mind finding a way to cut the playoffs back to three rounds. Four best-of-7 series after an 82-game regular season is a death march, set aside the fact that it extends the season into June. It puts an awful lot of importance on injury luck - can you avoid losing key players to injury?

    Another stupid thought by me. Start sooner, dont have playoffs of NBA and NHL overlap. Yes the NBA does schedule around the NHL. Miami Heat Vs FL Panthers. NHL releases their playoffs first. NBA purposely always puts Miami games and FL Panthers games on the same day and at the same time. This year was BS. The FL early start on game 1. Miami, gets almost the exact same time slot. They do it all season long and playoffs long. They try to put the NBA teams against the NHL teams to try to force the local market to divide which team they are going to watch or follow. Maybe other fans from other markets see this happen as well.

      In some way, shape, or form. The Bruins own 20% of NESN (the Boston Red Sox own the other 80%).
      So unlike other RSN's where the RSN pays the team and recoups the money via ads and subscriber fees (which leads to RSN bankruptcy and a contract not being paid), the Bruins receive 20% of whatever NESN earns.
      (And frankly, it's the Bruins that keep me on cable...)

    The start and end of the season is such a non-issue to me. If you don't care when other sports start, you shouldn't care when the NHL starts. Unless the only reason you care about when it starts is because you care about when it ends, but then why do you care when it ends?
    I dunno, complaining about the season ending in late June just feels like a "you can't be playing hockey in the summer" kind of thing, along the same lines as the "hockey in the desert?" attitude about the Coyotes.

    • @RJM1693
      @RJM1693 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In Canada especially, people tend not to watch TV as much in the summer because they’re outside, at the lake, etc. So finishing earlier would help.
      However, the US teams don’t want to start the season in September because that means more games competing for attention with the NFL and college football.
      But shortening the season would reduce revenue.
      So October-to-June is the compromise. The NBA has the same issue.

    On the balanced schedule issue, it seems bizarre that it’s such a big deal to have every team in every building every year so every city gets to see Crosby or McDavid or whoever, since any fan can see these top players whenever they want just by tuning in their games on TV. They can watch them 82 times if they want. If the argument goes, “well Vancouver fans want to see Crosby in person”, the only people seeing him in person are the 18,000 people in the building that night while all the rest are still watching him on TV, so the game might as well be in Timbuktu for all that matters. So we’re kept from a more sensible schedule for the 18,000 people in Vancouver who have tickets to that one game?
