The other ability represented by “partner with [name]” is a triggered ability that means “When this permanent enters the battlefield, target player may search their library for a card named [name], reveal it, put it into their hand, then shuffle their library.”
How long ago was Battlebond? Goodness.
Looking at this ruling, it does seem that this doesn't get around Opposition Agent.
Note that the target player searches their library (which may be affected by effects such as that of Stranglehold) and that the card they find is revealed, even though these words aren’t included in the ability’s reminder text. (2020-04-17)

You missed that Samwise Gamgee is now part of definitively the best Protean Hulk pile: SG, Cauldron Familiar, 1 CMC sac outlet, Grand Abolisher.
They should do a stream where they build this mythical food payoff deck together, they clearly have opinions and the want to brew it

Golos is both a tutor for Mount Doom and a legendary artifact for the last ability.

I wonder if Samwise Gamgee could get into a Protean Hulk deck as a backup wincon, since you can use Hulk to tutor for Sam, Cauldron Familiar, Viscera Seer, and Grand Abolisher, all at once.

54:30 ok, so Shadow Summoning tokens come in tapped, and all their reasons are possible, but I think it's actually for flavor reasons. There are 4 cards that make spirit tokens, telling the story of Aragorn calling the Grey host to fulfill their oath made to his ancestor. All of the spirits enter tapped EXCEPT for those summoned by Anduril when wielded by a legendary creature. The spirits come to the battle late unless Aragorn is compelling them to fight using Anduril, his reforged sword pf his ancestors
26:55 You can't actually stack the abilities, since Frodo uses an intervening if. What you can do, is eat the food at the beginning of combat after you make it, but before you go to declare attackers. I'm sure that's what Serge meant, but this is to clarify the specific way you need to do the things.
30:10 Partner With does cause the targeted player to search their library. Remember, reminder text is not rules text, it is just a quick explanation of the most relevant interactions in the set or format it is printed in. It does not get around Opposition Agent or Aven Mindcensor.
What Serge is referring to at 26:55 is resolving Sam's ability at the beginning of combat, then before moving to attacks sacrificing the fresh food.

I was a bit confused by Serge's comment about Frodo not having a way to ring-tempt himself, particularly the part about needing a critical mass of ring-tempting in your deck. Frodo ring-tempts on attack if you've gained 3 life, so even if you're not big on ring tempting, it is just a lifegain payoff, and it tutors a repeatable lifegain creature as well so it does come with its own part A
The issue is that if you're relying only on frodo it's the conditional tempt that takes three turns to start drawing cards.
You draw a card off of Frodo turn 2, but the "draw 2 discard 1" does only come online turn 3.
@@MakeVarahHappen You only have to attack with Frodo twice to get the card draw. The second time you attack with him after gaining 3 life, you have been tempted twice and so you draw a card.

Wheeler didn't mention it, but Samwise Gamgee gives you a Flash (or Pattern of Rebirth) pile that's 4 mana value - Seer or Feeder, Samwise, Cauldron Familiar. That extra two mana value can be used to get, say, Grand Abolisher, which makes your combo *very* difficult to interact with.

Regarding Prize Pig - all I can think about seeing this card is that it starts to get really good with Aetherflux Reservoir (which, I know, is like saying Elvish Mystic starts to get really good with Natural Order) 😁
i mean, if you're casting Forth Eornlingas on turn 2 with a mana dork out... why would you not cast it for x=1 and hit with the token instead of the dork?

its very reasonable that im wildly off base here, but i have an inkling that there may be some kind of 4C Blood (blueless) style deck that also plays a bunch of the food cards from this set, and cards from the Mardu aristo-scraps lists out there
Maybe it’s me misunderstanding, but a lot of the Lotho discussion sounded directed in terms of “if an opponent casts two spells”, but you get the treasure if you cast two spells too. Not sure if that was part of the evaluation.
I dunno… after watching this I’m just not sure how Wheeler feels about being there.
I dunno he was VERY excited about those eggs and nuts. How could it not have been great to be there?

I now have a deep need to create an infinite combo involving an old man and a pig.
Prize Pig, The Gaffer, Sam, Loyal Attendant. Those 3 are so close to infinite, you just need constant food somehow.

I really like how lotho into any 0 mana artifact gives you the treasure right away. Maybe something like esper control/hero of precinct one strategies? Just having one mana left to hold up an early removal piece or spell pierce just seems neat

Did they notice Lotho triggers off of you, not just your opponent. So the ceiling isn't 1 treasure each round, it's 4.
A lot of these Hobbits seem really good in Abzan Soul Sisters, along with possibly Academy Manufactor to get Food, Treasures, and Clues each time you would get any one! Throw in Murkwood Bats, Disciple of the Vault, Frodo partners with Sam... This feels like a deck!
Re: Mount Doom and Legendary Artifacts: if there is a The Ring Tempts you deck, naming any Artifact creature as Ring Bearer can satisfy the Legendary artifact part of the 3rd land ability.
I think Lotho could be interesting in D&T just because the treasures help offset the mana costs incurred by cards like thalia, rishadan port, and strip mine. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it get cut from that list either.
I just came back her and during the samwise gamgee/cat conversation, I realized that Sam is also great with witch's oven and corridor monitor.
something that wasnt mentioned when talking about pippin. One advantage it has over mother of runes is that it can protect your legends from karakas which is pretty cool. Giver of runes can do that too but always nice to have redundancy
In addition to Battlebond, Partner with was also used in the Commander decks of Ikoria. Quite nicely, I thought.

Just think its worth mentioning, no idea if they see play in canlander, but theres 2 more 2 mana creatures that draw a card. Spirited Companion(who is the best of the bunch) and Dusk Legion Zealot(who is most comparable to Mordor Muster)
I know that’s not really what anybody in the crew plays and probably isn’t even a card that has been relevant for years, but for me Lembas is the best Elixir of Immortality ever printed. The part that makes it weak for Artifact decks is what makes me as a hard control player excited for it!
I like how Aragorn, the Uniter just kills your opponent if you Berserk it.
I know he was going in alphabetical order, but there's something wrong about introducing the legendary land cycle in BWRUG order
While I agree wholeheartedly with Wheeler, and as the good man himself likely noticed, you can also still play "Forth, Eorlingas!" on turn 2 for 3 mana and swing, since the Knight is hasty. Now, there may be scenarios when you'd rather not, but, I just wanna tell the comment section that you CAN.
Small gripe but it’d be nice if the untap on Prize Pig was a may or an activated ability. I know those decks consistently gain 3 at a clip and either way it’s still a mana dork, but I could see templating that works better for controlling the untap when you have Soul Wardens and your opponent’s playing creatures

You know, I wonder how much the additional monarch cards makes Palace Jailer worse. Like the big upside is that killing it doesn't get the creature back. But that can kind of become a downside if every deck has a bunch of random become the monarch cards and they just need to play a card from hand to get whatever was under the monarch back. Doesn't seem like its at that point yet, but they keep printing good monarch cards, so it might hit a point where the exiled creature going under the monarch instead of the Jailer is more liability than upside.

If you've literally ever thought of Ramunap ruins in your deck, than Mount Doom is worth it IMO.
Lotho feels like it’s a card that’s good in a deck that doesn’t exist. I would want to play it with Ledger Shredder, but Esper Tempo isn’t really a thing. It’s a mana bank, but are any Storm decks playing white?
Is there a world where, since lembas is itself a food, it gets into that abzan or abzan blue food deck they were theorycrafting? It's probably too slow but on some level 2 mana opt make a food is worth considering
Like this food deck could be super real. There are all those food matters cards they were talking about both from in this set and that had been previously printed. Not to mention the lifegain matters cards like frodo being boosted by some of the best other abzan cards like siege rhino. Additionally, Oko has never looked so good

It's the ledger shredder trigger. The effect of Shredder is what is good because it gets it out of bolt range, and doesn't make you lose life.

It's always weird to me when they criticize signpost Limited uncommons as if they are designed in a vacuum.
They say, right at the beginning of every one of these set reviews: They are only discussing these cards as they apply to Canadian Highlander. It doesn't matter if a card is good in Draft, or Sealed, or Modern, or Pauper, or if it makes a good Commander. If it isn't good in Canadian Highlander, then they will call it bad.
@@boosterh1113 I know that's what they say. I'm commenting on their states like "why couldn't it do this" or other comments about wanting the design to be different. It also comes up here when they compare cards and make fun of one for being worse than another, when one is an uncommon vs a rare.

With how many times they mention triomes it makes me think there needs to be a card that shuts down greedy mana bases more than blood moon.
I mean there are, you’ve got magus of the moon, price of progress, back to basics, and wasteland, the only issue is that most of these are symmetrical effects and most decks don’t want to hose their own mana bases
