Container Gardening 101!

  • Here at our urban nursery, we're tight on space and we don't always have the luxury of planting everything in the ground. If we've offered it for sale, then we've tried it in a container - from small trees to the tiniest rock garden treasures. And if we've learned one thing (OK - more than one thing, but that's why you should watch the video) - it is this: SIZE MATTERS. As in, the size of your container is of essential importance. Those chubby, juicy roots are going to need space to spread out and if hindered, will lead to less than thrilling results. If you've been disappointed by how your containers have performed in the past then tune in - we're going to give you some of our tried and true tips for how to do it right!

Exactly what I am looking for. One plant each container and mix the containers. Perfect for deck, patio and porch.

Thank you. I have been looking to a lot of container videos and just don't like the thriller, filler, spiller look. I think it looks so much better with simplicity. Love your video.

I have very little space and want to maximize it and I want a lot of different flowers, so I am gonna plant mixed planters to get a cottage feel

Thank you this was so helpful!. Most all of my trees/plants I planted through the years have died. Very few made it. For now own it's potted plants for this yard. My yard has that black clay, then the drought. I can't afford to change the dirt to sandy loam. This will work better. I have several in pots that have survived barely with the potting mix mixed with top soil and or better quality soil. Fertilized and miracle grow. There alive but could bloom better with your version. Of course nursery s have all the tricks of the trade. THANK YOU FOR SHARING

I lived in San Francisco for 15 years in an apartment. Hence, why I never knew you were there since I couldn't plant anything. Now that I live in Terlingua, TX and have 20 acres to do with as I wish, now I hear of you! I wish that I could have visited your what must be amazing nursery while living so nearby. Until I have a cabin on my 20 acres I've been planting everything in large containers until I can move onto the property. Your place is such a wonderful resource. Thank you! The Gaillardia and Hollyhocks that arrived are doing marvelously in this very warm weather. I'm curious to see what they will do when the temps are 115 F by June or July.

Wow! Great advice. I'm new to gardening and we've just moved into our new house with clayey soil in our narrow side, front and upper gardens, so am going to try the "container gardening" method.

You suggest using large pots for root expansion etc but what about size of pots for geraniums that advice is normally given for their roots to be contained in smaller pots. I must say that my geraniums have never looked good in the small pots, especially the trailing ones. What is your advice please?
