I felt the entire internet sigh with disappointment when you said you were swapping in an automatic. I mean I get it... But c'mon man! Keep that manual!
It'll just be too difficult to repair this section with the radius.. So rather than repair what we have using the existing frame as a template and to keep it all square we're going to fabricate an entire new back half from scratch using C channel!.. Complete with even more radius's LOL

I believe that tow truck is a 1974 year model because it has a 1973-74 grille, headlight bezels, & front blinker lenses & the emblem on the passenger side dash says Custom which 1974 was the last year for that package & the new Custom Deluxe package replaced it in 1975. 1974 was also the first year for the drip molding trim above the doorways on the exterior. The front blinker lenses below the headlights on 1973-74 year models are orange, 1975 & up are clear.

I am sure it will be ever so nice when done and the old ladder truss wrecker bed will only be a small portion of what it was before

So going to the 700R4 I’m guessing the wrecker bed is now for looks? There isn’t a place on the 700 to bolt on a PTO pump. Maybe they’ll go some other electric over hydraulic system to run the boom and winch. I hope it isn’t just a poser now. I still like the project.

Guys, the fastest way to fix all the rust is to quit buying junk from back east!! You could easily buy a driver from these years out here in Colorado. On second thought, DON'T, so they are still here for us!!

I have a 69 C30, but it has a work bed. Is there a way to have a bed fitted as it left the factory as a cab truck?

Should do an air ride like on the 6500 series GM trucks and to make things simple go with electric winches and sell the remaining parts of the Holmes unit to someone who want their unit original. It will be much easier with the automatic transmission. A 90 Model GMC front clip would look good too along with updated strobe style lights on the wrecker unit. Just my opinions and I’m sure interested in watching this build.

Nah. People in the comments want archaic technology not modern usability.

If they would just get a 1985 CUCV M1008 chevy frame. It's already automatic, reinforced one ton frame and a standard square body .

I have one. Wish I had a 383 to put between the frame rails tho, instead of my rubbish 305.
