- A step-by-step overview of what manual Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) might look like. This video is for PD awareness / education as a more gentle alternative to Hemodialysis for ESRD/ ESKD.
Terms used in this video are from Baxter Healthcare Corporation. Baxter supplies my PD fluids and supplies. They are delivered to my home.

I have just decided to do peritoneal dialysis instead of other. So this definitely was helpful. Now to inform my specialist of this, as we were getting ready to install the fistula next visit. I am 70 and don’t want the extra 2 hrs a day, travel to hospital 3 times a week. Hope I am making the right choice. I am sure I can handle this 🙏🏻

I graduated manual dialysis in two days. Today was my 2nd day. I did PD at home this afternoon. I am doing four yellow bags a day. 8am until 5pm. At the end I fall asleep. I work after at 6:30pm Thursday and Friday. That will be tough. Getting used to full feeling in stomach. There’s a lot to tell you but all stuff you talk about. Using Amia Baxter machine next. Now I get back bloodwork and see the dietician. Thank you again.

Thank you for this video. I am a dialysis “partner” to my husband. My first training and experiences were with manual dialysis…. but, for nearly eight months now we have been using a cycler. A few days ago, my husband had to replace the transfer set part of his catheter. In the process, his nurse detected a possible infection, and to be on the safe side, it was decided that we should (in addition to his normal dialysis therapy treatment) temporarily do a small manual bag containing an antibiotic solution during the day. At first, I felt confident as we had done manual dialysis several times. But later, when we got home, I thought it would probably be wisest to refresh my memory. It has been several months, after all, since we’ve had to do this. Anyway, this video was just the thing I needed. It acted as a short brush-up course. It all came back to me, and once again, I’m feeling confident to do this therapy. I also saved the video to refer back to, jic. Again, thank you. You’ve been a great help.

Things have changed since my days of PD. I started doing manual exchanges when I was 8. I started doing it myself when I was 10. My mom did my exchanges up to then. I used to warm my bag then hook up and hang it. Let it flow in then when it was finished I would pull it down and roll the line and empty bag and ruck it in my back pocket. 4 hrs later I would unroll the bag and line and toss it on the floor. Open the clamp and let it drain back into the og bag. Then change it to a new back and repeat. No scales or anything. We went by how much fluid came back out. I didn’t start a cycler for many years. I also did the cycler as a 12 -15 yrs old. I didn’t miss a step playing outside or anything. I would just have to go in every 4 hrs and do an exchange. Did them at school during lunch in nurses office. My mom would come do them.
I meant to say this was 1984 when I started.
Wow so did you get a kidney transplant
Yes I was transplanted May 19, 1991. It lasted until July 26, 2001. I was 15 when I was transplanted and 25 when it failed. Ive been on hemo ever since. I will ne for the rest of my days. I'm 47 now. Complications from the previous transplant and so many blood transfusions have left me unable to get another kidney. I'm ok with it. I treat it like a job. I go into the center 3x a week early in the AM. I'm glad you have gotten straightened out. I always rejoice when someone receives a successful transplant. In my 10 years I never had a case of rejection. Take care and live large! @@blackwood635

I'm sorry to hear about your transplant kidney failing. But how was your quality of life during that 10 years? You mentioned complications...what kind did you experience?

6 of my siblings were on dialysis 2 did PD 3 did it at home health is Wealth sharing is caring shared
So sad my Grandma did the PD but almost all the rules were not observed, she managed to be on it only for a month before she passed on. May ger Soul rest in perfect peace 🙏. I really missed her. Her thought makes me 😭 anytime. She died 1996, 27 years today!

Have you ever got some of the drain fluid go back into your catheter into your peritoneal cavity?
Do you take the pills with you to go do the hand wash the second time before you disconnect?
Does the catheter that hooked to you cause infection in your body?? I’m really scared of this

Do you actually feel better after your treatment? I’m in stage 3b and I’m so exhausted. I often think when dialysis start will I feel better.
I do PD every night so my numbers stay constant. I do have more energy now that I'm on dialysis. I suffer from anemia and once I was on dialysis I was able to get iron shots and that really helped.
low carb diet will help with that.
I'm 20 and i'm at the regional hospital (hospital in my town is bad).I chose to do PD instead of Hemodialysis because i don't wanna travel to another town each time,but i'm scared of the surgery and incoming pain.I also have cats so idk how i will handle everything.I'm probably gonna use cycler because i wanna be free during the day and the machine is also given for free
You can have pets and still do PD at home. When you are hooking up or disconnecting you just have to make sure your cats aren't in the room. The tubing will pulse and move while you are doing dialysis so if you have a cat that will "attack" the tubing, you will just have to make sure they are not in the room while you do therapy.
Getting the PD catheter was hard for me, but I did recover quickly. There is discomfort and sometimes pain when the fluid is drained, but if that happens, you can leave extra fluid in your Peritoneal and that will make it so that it doesn't hurt.

I can't put in 2000 mL of dialysis fluid it makes me feel uncomfortably full and Bloated have any advice?
Is “filling up” uncomfortable?
They said you all the family member have to be Covid vaccinated and have other vaccines family members living in the household is this true

Do you have pain ?
Because peritoneal dialysis requires a catheter there is a risk of complications such as peritonitis, but if you follow all the steps diligently you should be okay. Dialysis is not as good as a functioning kidney, but I was very grateful for the improvements I experienced. I had some pain, especially from abdominal surgery, but I was able to tolerate the daily discomfort just fine.

@@kidneykeeping So, with the machine, you use it at night and then are free during the day without having to do any additional dialysis? And you do it every night? Is the machine expensive? Or do you rent it? Sorry for all the questions.
No problem! I use the cycler every night. Therapy takes 8 hours for me. I start at 10:00 and therapy ends at 6:00am. I don't have to get up right when it ends but can continue to sleep. I don't have to do any additional dialysis during the day. My materials (from Baxter) were all assigned to me from my clinic. My nephrologist works with a DCi clinic near my home. My insurance covers the cost of dialysis so I don't know how much it will be for another person, but the machine is "assigned" to me. Hope that helps.

My God. What torture !!!.
No. It’s kept my husband alive, allowed him to feel better, keep working, and travel. He couldn’t do those things before dialysis because he was so unwell. He couldn’t even walk to the end of the street without stopping several times. I really wish people would educate themselves and see these things for the life-savers that they are. My husband doesn’t find it “torture”, he’s not in pain after the initial surgery, it’s merely a minor inconvenience to him to have a life.
