This is the second in a small series of portraits I'm doing of my characters! I hope this process walkthrough helps some of you to understand how I approach lighting/shadows, and why it's super fast and easy to do it this way rather than a more 'traditional' approach.
Programs: Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop CC
Thank you fro watching!

wonderful video. thank you for all the explanations! i love seeing more people use clip studio. i'm just really happy with the program. i switched a few years ago after photoshop started to need more and more resources and managed to make my huge gaming pc (not even a laptop!) lag. ridiculous.
so anyway :) thank you so much!!
Hey! Was just wondering what brush you used? The one that seems to be written in Chinese, that was used broadly throughout the sketching and shading stages.
I completely agree with inking it first as well. It helps me see my shading to. Anyway thank you for the tutorial

Hello, what is the name of the sound you used for the video? Is it beautiful? I can not find it
"Coloring and Shading" starts at 8:56 (before that is stuff about sketching, inking, etc.)
thank you
I love you

Thank you sir
LMFAO thank you!!!!
Yo no cap, I would watch a whole ass anime about this character. This is literally art and a story in one, like his expression, his _EYES_ and even the clothes, makes me want to know who he is and what world or time he is from.
He looks like Trump but younger tho
@@tangerishaaa ...Oh HELL no! Bruh gtfo! 😂😂Why did you have to put that in my head. Nope, I refuse to see it, I refuse to let you ruin this. I REFUSE!

thank youuu that makes me very motivated to continue writing my script x'D
watching this has made me aware of how much I need to loosen up while drawing, I usually focus too deeply on certain mistakes and give up in tears
especially with hair, I will never understand hair
yes
same with the hair
I feel you... There was never a same method I'm using for hair Cuz I really cannot remember any method lol
if you're really disliking a drawing, just move on to a new one! since you've already recognized the mistakes you made the first time around, you can avoid them afterwards. as for hair, try to think of it as sections instead of individual strands! ;D
@@litsa9038 for me the shapes of hair just don’t feel right and I struggle with volume.
I think I just don’t understand how other people understand hair (?)
And I always just assumed I just had to force myself to finish everything, especially with digital painting. Thank you Beter
Not to be dramatic, but your art style is so pretty it literally made me pick up my iPad and start drawing 😭💛

Same like wtf??? It looks so glowy and polished😭

IKKK HES SO PRETTY😭
@@melsdrawingdiaries FRFR HE LOOKS SO COOL
We have the same pfp 👁️👄👁️
Seems we're simping today. I'm totally in.
what you said about stepping out and give the painting some time really made me realize that i dont have to do things in one sitting and call it a day... especially because i see stuff in my paintings that i dont like literally 5 seconds after i posted them on social media sobsss
Another way to get a fresh look quickly is to just flip the image horizontally once in a while. Stepping away is definitely a more thorough way of refreshing the mind though.
Professional illustrators spend up to 100hours on one work. made me realise i need to stop thinking i gotta finish one painting a day

*struts in after seeing thumbnail* Ladies, gentlemen, and everyone in between, the professional lazy procrastinator has arrived
(Also amazing job!!!!! Beautiful art! 💕)
you're at the right place my friend, I only have patience for figuring out the easiest and fastest ways to do things so I can continue procrastinating regularly :P (kinda jk but also tru lmao)
@@CosmicSpectrumArt continue procrastinating regularly??? xD didn't know that's a thing hahhahaha
I looked at the thumbnail and thought it was Draco Malfoy, but this was even better! It's amazing and it helped me so much with shading and highlighting!
This is sooooooooooo good.
Hi Kat! Surprised to find you here!
omg girl I see you literally everywhere lmao
The shading process was cool and all, but I'm still in awe over just how simple and elegant the hair turned out.
Just straight up gorgeous work.
As I was watching you draw the sketch I took a good look at his hair and thought, "huh, it looks like he cuts it himself". It's really cool how you're able to convey a detail as specific as that just in a portrait
I'm glad that was apparent!! :D thanks for commenting haha
Idk why but whenever I watch paint videos like this I'm like " yeah okay seems straight forward" and then halfway through I'm like "idk how we got here"
If this isn't a mood Idk what it is
You’ve made it onto my list of “artists that remind me why I love art”
I've been dragging my feet on rendering a piece because I just couldn't decide how I wanted to do it, this gives me some new things to try!
i gasped when i saw the thumbnail. this piece is gorgeous! :O
This is beautiful, your art and videos have been inspiring me to take my art journey more seriously and to do more studies and the like to grow in my art as much as possible. Thank you 😊
thank you for the comment!
13:39 explanation of the tools you use was very helpful! thank you so much!
What a mesmerizing portrait. It's going to suck you into thinking about the character's thoughts, background and circumstances.
I just LOVE your shading style! I would personally love to see more full illustrated videos with voice over, but vlogs sounds awesome aswell ❤️
Such a lovely piece! Your voice is so soothing as well! Loved to see the process! ♥
hot damn, the way the art went from just the flats to having so much depth is genuinely mind boggling. definitely going to try out this method in my own art!
Aa I love this so much, my art style/process is kind of similar to yours but I can never spend enough time on my drawings, so your quick tips seem to be really helpful 💓 Thank you for this video, the drawing is ✨ stunning ✨
Thank you so much for this. My art has been in a complete slump when it comes to colouring and shading and this has been such a huge help to push it forward.
Thank you again
I've always struggled with deciding between attempting a painterly style or keep inking, since it's my favourite part of the process, but now I realise I can do both! Thank you so much, I'll be trying this later!
Watching your full process’ is always so soothing to me and I can’t explain why, I love this piece so much
Thank you so much for making this video! I have a pretty lineart heavy style and could never get my head around how to make the shading more interesting and painterly like! Completely blew my mind and will definitely try it out! Thank you again!
You gave so much invaluable advice while drawing and using references, I can't thank you enough. I get stressed out whenever the coloring goes the wrong way and your outlook on things helped me realize that I need to loosen up A LOT and not try to copy what other artists do that just doesn't match with my style (aka lasso tool painting 😥)
Your art style is AMAZING. I love this character, I love how you sketch and how you render it! I feel like I've learned a ton from this video. I love how you were able to add so much definition and detail.
I can only hope to be able to do anything so amazing with my own art.
As somebody who is incredibly new to drawing and digital art, this is incredibly helpful. This makes my drawings seriously pop so much more than what i had ever hoped. incredible. I had to watch this video again and again and again and again. I always go back to it to make sure im shading it similar to the way you do. Thanks!
I've been struggling with keeping my characters consistent and manageable in a painterly style. So I started using your line art tips, and it's really been helping me get things done in a timely manner. Thanks for the vid!
I really enjoyed watching this, even as someone who doesn't draw digitally. You explained stuff and the way you mentioned the colours and exact opacities and stuff it felt clear enough to try emulating even for someone with no idea what they're doing!
Gorgeous❤
I love his name and the dramatic lighting so cool!!!
This is one of the prettiest character portraits I’ve ever seen. His eyes pierce right into the soul!
Wow this actually helped me so much! I was having so much trouble drawing on “one layer” for a more painted look, but it was taking so long because I didn’t have defined lineart or even a clean sketch to work off of. I just kept redrawing and fixing any mistake was a nightmare. My shadows and lighting was a mess, too. Thank you!
Omg! I love to watch your process. You're a huuuuge inspiration! You can achieve this kind of rendering that is believable, detailed and still simplified . I wish to get to this point one day with my stuff :3
Thank you for showing us your art
this is so stunning. beautiful.
I’ve been following you for a LONG time but this is the first video I watch from you, and just watching you go over your process it’s some like magic to me. And very, very inspiring as well. Thank you for sharing this!
this was so helpful for me because the process of painting digitally does not compute in my brain, so seeing it be done in steps like this makes it seem possible. also watching how you do it made me appreciate the end piece even more, so cool to see it come to life
Wow I really needed this. I paint on one layer and I struggle with exactly what you said. Facial structures warp, expressions change etc. This looks so amazingly polished!!
This looks just perfect omg!!
Love your coloring
The way you render... so magical. Feels like you're almost sculpting
all the little details are so incredibly awe inspiring your art gives me so much joyyyy
I loved the design, so cool
i’ve been having trouble with my digital painting process since im pretty new at it. this video gave me so much insights thank you!
that was incredible~ It helped me a lot! I've been struggeling sooooo much with all the different steps of colouring. To get a good variation and harmony of contrast, colour, shadow, light etc etc etc etc etc!
i´m stucked with an illustration and watch you´re prosses really helps me to overcome that artblock and figure it out what step doing next in my own work.
This video is a godsend.
I have a very line heavy style, inking has always been my favorite stage. And while I've dabbled into painting linelessly more as of late, I always find that I'm missing some of the essence of what makes my art recognizable.
I'm thinking of borrowing some of your process and see if that works better with how I naturally like to paint. It sounds like it should !
The lighting on this is sublime
Absolutely stunning results 😍
I absolutely adore this thank you so much omg
This is so gorgeous!!
I love this so much. Thank you.
This was so well demonstrated and well explained , thank you !!!
You talking about losing the essential peice of a sketch after getting rid of lineart is exactly what I've been struggling with and I'm so glad I watched this video. Never knew anyone else struggled with this! I've been trying to figure out how to incorporate hyper realism with lineart because i always tend to end up getting rid of the line work completely and I hate the way it looks after that.
In love with the style
awesome video!! i've been admiring many painterly styles for ages and the process and tips you shared are most definitely the easiest for me to understand and apply to my own work. thank you so much for sharing; your work is so beautiful!
This particular drawing made me feel some type of dramatic feeling i love it
watching this is therapeutic, not gonna lie.
the eyes are so striking and mesmerizing! i audibly gasped when i saw the thumbnail yesterday, and i still can't get over it today haha. you did an incredible job!
Me too !!!! I was like "this will save me !!"
HES SO FUNKY I LOVE HIM!!
Thank you! I got my graphic tab last year, but because I was busy I didn't have enough time to fool around with it. Learned a lot!
look thank you so much for this video. all the time ive been wanting to do a drawing that has paint-like quality like this but i thought you actually have to paint it and i never considered lineart at all god thank you so much im so inspires now :]
Amazing! Great Work!
Your work is amazing! Love your art 👏🏼💕
Brilliant work!
Omg I'm so thankful for this video ♥️ I can't figure out how I want to shade my drawings, so I'm trying new things and this is helpful. I love your style and I really wanna try this shading technique, because it looks incredible ♥️
This was so much fun to watch! I loveeee how this came out the lighting and shadows are beautiful and ur explanation is 👌
i love this you make it look so easy
i'm speechless, this is so stunning
I remember seeing this video at the time i was first exploring digital art, and the one step of "doing line-art even if you'll be painting or doing smth like painting" especially when using references helped me SO MUCH
before, it was so hard for me not to just copy the reference because i was painting directly over my sketch, this also helped me make my very first digital semi-realistic piece ever, and 'till this day i'm proud of it!
so thank you so much for sharing this info with us :)
yess that's so great to hear! It's crazy how much of a difference these little things can make eh xD
this is so beautiful oml
This has helped me so much. I'm always extremely intimidated by lineless pieces and I just prefer to have them anyways so I'm really happy I'm not the only one. And this is incredible and makes me want to take some real time and paint something instead of just cel shading it. Thanks so much for this video and your work is incredible!!❤
as someone who has never fully grasped painting and is primarily best at lineart, i am SO keen to try this method ✨ looooove how this portrait turned out too
Hi, Yana! Thank you so much for this video! I loved your explanations and how clearly you share knowledge. You're a star! To be honest, I've been struggling a lot with my lines (I used to paint directly over my sketches) and I really recognized myself in what you said about a character losing part of their facial features, so I'll definitely try inking + your approach to shadows in my next piece. I learned a lot from your video, thank you so much for making it! ♥♥♥
Glad I came across your video, it helped me a lot. I 100% agree with why you decided to keep the lineart. I'm in the same situation with how I draw and yes, it does help me retain the look and emotions intended for the artwork. Thanks for this!
Ahh your characters are so gorgeous! I’d love to see vlogs from you!
your traditional art is amazing, but now that I've seen a digital piece of yours.... 😍 i seriously need more of these
i literally fell in love with your art the moment i see it
also I love the brushes you’re using for sketching
OMGGGG.. I LOVE TO DRAW BUT I'M SO LAZY BUT PERFECTIONIST AT THE SAME TIME ~ THIS IS PERFECTO!!!! I NEED THIS 🔥🔥🔥😭💓💓💓
Oh my gosh as someone who struggles with painting on a single layer as well, thank you for showing me a result like this can be achieved on multiple layers with the right technique, this was very very inspirational and though I don't use Clip Studio I think this method can also be applied to pretty much every other drawing program, in my case Sai2. Tysm!! Amazing video and drawing!!
LOVE the dramatic lighting in this piece, it's absolutely striking! Really appreciate all the tips you give in your videos. I would definitely love to see studio vlogs from you! They're my favorite kind of video to watch (and make, haha).
Wooow the grainy details on the hair is so beautiful
this was legit the most helpful video i ever watched. thank you sm!
Love the character design! And the tutorial too!
Your work is just STUNNING... i will definitely go and see more of your video's to learn what brushes , layers and effects you use. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Was struggling to shade using this software since there's a pen, pencil and brush tool with a lot of presets. This video helped me a ton
I fell in love with your character as the video processed omg... gorgeous!!
I love and appreciate this step by step more then you will ever know
this is really amazing, thank you for sharing!
ayy, we share the same technique, i also do line art after a rough sketch, its just most comfortable way for me to shape my idea. what you said about losing the emotion/the original idea through painting is spot on.
Wow!!! Really nice.
Okay, you have no idea, I've been looking for a good video on how to do this style of shading/painting for a while and this is the perfect video showing it, I can't wait to use this method
I've struggled a lot to do a more painterly look while sticking close to my original drawing -- this helped a lot, thank you!
This is the first time I've ever seen a character drawn with a actual Hazel eyes. And the colors are, solid and hard, but pretty accurate
Thankyou for sharing, I've been watching many tutorial and all your explanation hit the spot!
