    Sony's three amigos are light and compact G series prime lenses.
    Mark looks at Sony's recent efforts to shrink the size and weight of the full-frame camera (A7C) and its full-frame lenses. These include the FE 28-60mm F4.5-5.6 zoom and the three new premium quality compact primes. The FE 24mm F/2.8 G, FE 40mm F/2.5 G and the FE 50mm F2.5 G.

If you have with you an iphone 13 pro with good at 28 milimeter and can get a 2x lens for the main sensor, and a wild angle 0 distortion lens for it from moment and sandmarc, and you have a dji pocket 2 and rx 100vii for casual wildlife capture, which 1 or 2 lenses whould you recommend in focal length for everyday shooting 24 and 35, yamyang 14mm and a 35 mm, a 24 and a 40 or a 50, 55 is too bulky, maybe for me, or the 85mm in aps-c mode porduces more detail cropped in the image than the 24-200 on rx100vii? or maybe an 18-135 is a better buy for everyday wildlife, and get a a laowa 9mm for ultrawide shots and a 35equavilent lens for portraits? I wish there was some sort of 28-60 kit equivalent that went to full 24mm. I love the kit lens but I really do need that 4mm for what I shoot. I'm using the Zeiss 24-70/F4, but I must admit it's a bit soft compared to the 28-60. This video has kinda convinced me to whittle down my kit to just the 24/2.8, 85/1.8 and then the 28-60 tossed in the bag because it's damn near lens cap sized.
    Thanks for laying it all with, yet again, your trademark style of comprehensive yet succinct 🙏

    Mark I have an A9, R4 , 600 f4, 200-600 and a few Sony G master zooms. I just picked up the A7C with 2 F2 primes and I am having so much fun with this camera. Besides the enjoyment factor the IQ in varying lighting conditions is better than the R4 and the A9. It handles noise better than both of those cameras in low light and the auto focus system is on par with the R4 and maybe just a hair under the A9. I had 2 A6600's and sold them both, I may get a second A7C, it is a deceivingly capable camera.

    Great video Mark. Glad to see Sony going this direction. I wonder if they will ever introduce a prime G lens between the 135 GM and 400 GM that is smaller and lighter. Maybe it's just me, but I'd love something for wildlife travel that has reach, and is smaller than the 100-400 GM. Happy to have this in a prime because we can crop so affectively now. The 70-300 just isn't sharp enough for me and I only use it at 300 anyway.

    Mark, thanks for your singular focus on weight and size in this video. The purpose of buying an a7c (in my case) would have been defeated by a lopsided setup with a huge lens. I chose to complement my a7c with my Leica M-mount 28 Elmarit plus the Voigtlander close-focus adapter. At f/8 or f/11 with 6 ft on the focusing ring and the camera set to auto ISO, the setup is a bit smaller than using my M10 for street work. I lose some EXIF data but don't particularly care for it. I am now tempted to buy the new 24 G lens for video.

      I am pleased you share my passion for reducing the size of the gear we use on a daily basis. These three lenses enable full-frame photographers to reduce the size of their kit so that it fits in a small messenger bag designed for a micro four-thirds or APS-C system. The only challenge that remains is how to reduce the size of a telephoto lens designed for a full frame camera. A higher resolution. sensor will, of course allow, Full Frame users to be able to shooting APS-C mode to leverage some of the smaller APS-C lenses such as the excellent SEL 70-350 G. @@AlphaCreativeSkills I saw some examples on TH-cam of people using the 11mm and cropping in on the ZV-E1 but the image looks a bit wobbly/worpy like jello when there is movement such as walking (looks ok for static shots though). Have you experienced that at all? - do you have any sample video of the results you were able to get?
      Also, I meant any compact lens options, not just from Sony :) - not sure if there's anything new since you made the video. I'm been APS-C until now and just ordered my first full frame, the ZV-E1.

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is not because of the 11mm lens but because of slower readout speeds of some sensors. The ZV-E1 has faster readout times so the problem is not as bad as other cameras. I have a ZV-E1 setup video. The problem with using an APS-C lens on the ZV-E1 is that you are shooting in HD instead of 4K due to the low resolution of the ZV-E1 12 megapixel sensor. Only the cameras using stacked sensors are immune from the 'wobbly' effect, sometimes referred to as the 'jello effect' when shooting movies of things moving. Consider joining me on my Patreon.com/markgaler support channel for one-on-one advice and guidance. I only get to answer a small cross section of questions on my TH-cam channel.

    40mm or 50mm? Tough call! I spent a month in SE Asia with an a9 and Zeiss Batis 18mm, 40mm and 85mm lenses. The 40mm was my most used lens. I enjoyed its near-macro capability, but since it's basically a lens built into its own extension tube, I didn't really enjoy the weight and bulk when carrying. I'd never really bonded with the 50mm, though I never wanted to be without one in the bag (I started shooting 40 years), until I picked up a used Leica M10 and 1979-manufactured 50mm f2 Summicron-M two years ago. Other than my iPhone, every picture I've taken for the last two years has been with that combo. Decisions...
    I used a 24mm as a walking around lens with a Nikon F100. I liked it. It taught me to look for strong foreground-background compositions. The first image I ever licensed came out of that combo, shot on Tri-X pushed to ISO 1200. I'd have the 24mm G lens in my bag for sure. I bought the Batis 18mm for Asia because I had specific compositions in mind, based on previous trips.
    The bad part is, the A7c is on backorder for 2-4 months. I'll buy the lenses first.

    Not much love for 40mm I guess... Only one shot in the video, and one shot in samples on flicker? 40mm would be the one I might want. Never really liked 50mm much, and 24mm is too wide for many scenes (at least to me) 35/40 are my 'happy medium' and most used primes. [plus I do already have the Sony 20mm f/1.8 - for wider angle landscape/astro/etc.]

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was most interested in testing the 24 and 50 as I already own the Zeiss 35mm F2.8 which is lighter and smaller than the 40mm. Testing a 40mm alongside a 50mm seemed a little weird to me, as I use my lens to change my distance to the subject. The difference between 40 and 50 being minimal. The thought of changing lenses instead of my distance to the subject is something a little alien to my own workflow when working with primes.

    I think they are slightly overpriced still… (in Europe we pay €700 each, while the fantastic 35 1.8 is also €700,-) when i look at an other Camera brand were they make rather good hobbyist lenses like a very very small 16mm f2.8 (not out yet but it is comming) for full frame for only $299. But well there are other brands making glass for sony e-mount

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They may be more expensive than other brands but for the saving you may not get an aperture ring, focus hold button, AF/MF switch and fast linear AF motors. So I think it would be fairer to say they are premium lenses priced accordingly and not budget lenses for people who don't care about optimum performance. The clue here is that Sony added the letter G to indicated they were not budget lenses.

  • @Mark080959

    Dear Mark, you are doing a great job for all Sony fans! Thanks so much. Here is the 'but'... For you it is so normal to think and talk from the point of view of having the newest gear there is. I dont think you are aware of this. But sometimes i feel like a second rank customer. I am a very enthused amateur, not a pro. So for my family budget there are other priorities then having the newest foto equipment. I just bought the A7R3 because i didnt see the added value, compared to the higher price of the R4. But still there is almost no video from your hands that wont classify me as a user of outdated equipment. I know you dont intend this, in your site you serve customers like me too. But in your choice of words, you hide messages that disqualify me as Sony customer. Maybe you can pay a little attention to this. You dont have to say 'owners of the somewhat older cams' you can just say 'owners of the cams... and ...'. I mean i just bought a brand new A7R3 - at least it smells new and came in a new box... so i dont recognize when you tell me that my brand new cam is 'old'. As an ICT guy, i understand why you say it this way, but sometimes 'techtalk' can be quite offensive to loyal customers as i am.
    I hope you get my point. Dont forget you are a Sony ambassador and i think Sony really values - or should value - all customers.

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is not my intention and I actively support Alpha users with A7lll, A7Rlll and all the APS-C cameras. I have educated photographers about the advances of digital cameras since 1991 and always feel obliged to highlight where these technological developments have been made. I actively shoot with the A7C so I don’t advocate that you need an A1 or A7RM4. I even created an extended review and eBook to show photographers how to get the best out of a Sony RX100 pocket camera.

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills

      Can I say that I am little disturbed that you feel I am hiding messages by using the words new and old and using offensive language. I am not paid by Sony to support the Alpha community so providing learning support is even harder when people say that I have motives for my choice of language.
