- In 1983, 60 Minutes correspondent Morley Safer reported on the story of Lenell Geter, a young, successful engineer who was sentenced to life in prison for armed robbery. Safer and producer Suzanne St. Pierre, who died earlier this month at age 88, dug into the case and saved Geter's life.
"60 Minutes" is the most successful television broadcast in history. Offering hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news, the broadcast began in 1968 and is still a hit, over 50 seasons later, regularly making Nielsen's Top 10.

A very sad story, trying to pin a crime on a innocent man with no criminal history.
They thought people would just lie down and take it. They didn't expect 60 minutes to jump in
This is Allso a story about having a criminal " history" because having one when you did nothing to deserve having one is not pleasant either, the criminal justice system in britain is so corrupt that they make sure most poor working class kids have a record at an early age that they can use against you as and when there whim dictates guilt or innocence plays no part in building up a "history " for you so you can be easily taken into custody for a made up crime and easily jailed based on your made up history.
They always do
It was because of the color of his skin. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out.
@@michaelveis4985you know many white men have the same thing happen right?
That prosecutor needs to be locked up for life.
Makes you wonder how many innocent people that man destroyed
@Rob-lw1uwIts crazy how the state will do everything in their power to throw a man in prison... and go out of their way to suppress any evidence that the man is innocent. Even when a man is rotting in jail and the state gets proff that the man can very likely be innocent... They will not bat an eye to help the innocent man out of jail... This is The State, Your State, who you pay taxes to... absolutely insane system.
For what crime exactly? You’d have to prove criminal intent not just incompetence. Yes of course this case was a travesty of justice whether it was the result of incompetence or actual criminal intent by the prosecutors but the former is not a punishable crime.
@Rob-lw1uw I believe they were incompetent in prosecuting this case but the question is was the prosecution guilty of criminal misconduct; that is a very different and difficult case to prove.
He's probably passed on.
An engineer with no record making over 25k per year in the early 1980s and decided to rob a restaurant on his lunch break seems bogus
And, he just got approved for the bank loan that day. If he got approved for the loan, why would he need to rob a KFC?
A BLACK engineer with no record making over 25k....etc. There fixed this for you.
This is America. Check the history that is now illegal in many states including Florida and Texas to teach.
@hiphopjewels he was convicted for life not for robbing a bank but for robbing KFC. Big difference. I need us all to pay attention and not sleep on America's details.
@@raeallyn7030 I obviously meant KFC, no need to be a wise guy. Edited.
I recall when this happened I have to admit it truly soured me on the Justice system I realized for most it strictly about convictions not if a person is guilty or innocent. They will go after low hanging fruit 🍎 if you are in a position where they can get the conviction on you beware.

This was a calculated arrest ,prosecution, and sentencing of an educated black man by the good Ole boys.
That $24,000 was equivalent to about $77,678.42 in today's economy. I doubt he needed to rob KFC customers. Man, I miss reporting like this. 60 minutes was the absolute best.

I recalled the Geter story then, in 1983. When 60 Minutes did his story, Geter was out of prison in one week! His case was subsequently dropped. Geter and the late Mory Schaefer became life-long friends. In fact, Geter invited all of 60 Minutes staff to his wedding.
Last week, yes, last week, 2024, the Feds did the same Geter script on an innocent Black Man. They claimed he did multiple crimes that could send him to prison for 200 years. His nightmare only lasted half a day- all charges were dropped and the feds are not talking why they targeted an innocent law- biding Black Man. The past of devaluing and enslaving black men insinuate itself in the present and is just as real!

Ill give 60 min an award of excellence on their coverage of LINNEL'S miscarriage of justice.

Old school journalist used to wholeheartedly, and tenaciously do research on their subjects, and as a result they would LITERALLY solve crimes for the police!!! This kinda hits home for me, because I live in the proximity of where this man was falsely accused of this crime, and racially charged allegations were made against him. YES!!! This conviction was definitely RACIALLY MOTIVATED!!! The supreme court needs to protect us more from law enforcement with ego and pride addictions. Its insane that this happened to him. All while the real criminal is laughing and probably not far away.
The REAL criminal is causing major terror and enjoying freedom, while the wrong criminal was unfairly doing the time.
That's ALL of law enforcement these days. If there were all these so called good cops, no way could we have the seemingly endless footage of the corrupt ones. They're all corrupt or it couldnt happen like it does
That’s not why they were put on the Court sadly
That prosecutor's willingness to engage his imagination, should be criminal.

He was a gang member…
This is the biggest reason i don't believe in the death penalty. Too many times this happens
I support the d-penalty but only for the most heinous cases where the evidence of guilt is irrefutable, e.g., DNA evidence. In cases of wrongful convictions, police, DA, and judges that conspire to charge and prosecute innocent people need to be held accountable starting with job loss and jail time.
The death penalty comes ahead of the opportunity to be tried in a court of law.
Appalling! Even muderers often do not receive a life sentence. I don't believe he is guilty yet a life sentence for armed robbery? Shame on the authorities and the prosecution for this intelligent and educated man's demise. Inexcusable! Set this man free.

I recall this story from it's original broadcast. At the time, 1982, I was between my sophomore and junior undergraduate years. One of the reasons it caught my attention, there were multiple reasons, was the fact that Jeter was an Engineer. I was a mathematics major with aspirations of becoming a double math/engineering student. I'm also a black man and, in many respects, Jeter and myself were contemporaries. Watching this piece all these decades later it's intriguing to see the cast of characters (e.g. the southern law enforcement, the district attorney, investigators, work colleagues...) I was particularly impressed with the interview testimony of the female co-worker/witness to the robbery; her comments about Jeter and the way she articulated them were at once humorous and touching.
I'm so happy to hear that this egregious injustice was corrected and that Jeter was able to move on to a productive life. Thanks so much for reintroducing this story, it's been both pleasurable and informative viewing.

Shortly after his release, Geter married his fiancée Marcia. The following year, he filed an $18 million lawsuit for his wrongful conviction against the DA and the police officers and municipalities involved. He received a $50,000 settlement from the City of Greenville.
In 1987, the story of Lenell Geter’s wrongful conviction was made into a motion picture called “Guilty of Innocence.” Geter later became a church deacon, author and professional development coach, and he helped to found a nonprofit organization called Justice Denied Research Inc.
