" Empire of Passion " is quite good. The story seems simple - a sort of Double Indemnity tale of illicit love and murder - but the characters are somewhat complex. You do not quite root for them but you feel some sympathy. It is a nightmare of a story, with one evil deed attempting to hide another evil deed. The cinematography is accomplished.

It's actually more like Postman Always Rings Twice but with the twist of the ghost aspect

Such a great video mate I love the comparison of Suzuki and Oshima with Kurosawa and Ozu. I think Oshima and Suzuki have given so much to the world of cinema. Outstanding video mate!

Great choice for this series. Oshima is definitely one of the most underrated filmmakers of all time and worthy of a lot more attention!

The first post-rebranding "So You Want To Get Into", congrats Dion! I've only seen two Ōshima films so far (same as your first experiences), but the mastery on display is unparalleled and certainly makes me excited to continue this cinematic journey. Fantastic video!

Terrific video. I have a few films by this director (Realm of the senses, Mr lawrence, Empire Of passion) and have no real excuse for not having watched them apart from laziness.

Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence was a film that heavily influenced me in my younger days and Forbidden Colours was my fav song of all time for many years -to my shame I didn’t watch any other Oshima movies after that but your excellent video has inspired me to correct this.

Calling Oshima humanistic is a pretty big mischaracterization. His movies explicitly reject a humanist perspective, for the most part, and are more correctly characterized as Brechtian. In fact, Boy is considered one of his weakest movies precisely because of its humanism. Night and Fog in Japan really is not about the right at all, but rather was made as a commentary on the contemporary anti Anpo movement, Oshima's own student activist past and the lessons he learned from it. I feel like you should've put more time into researching what has already been written about him and Japanese history and culture, I felt some of your statements about culture in specific were quite strongly influenced by orientalism. Watching his films without understanding their context, the politics involved or the target audience makes analyzing his work very difficult, if not impossible.

Oshima has been on my watchlist forever. His style seems very interesting and he has a notorious reputation. I've seen 2 from Suzuki of the Japanese New Wave so far (Tokyo Drifter and Branded To Kill) so look forward to checking out more. Also would love a video on Nobuhiko Obayashi. I'm going to get into him soon and my friend is a big fan of his.

The only film I have rated by him is Death by hanging. Watched cruel story of youth recently and just switched it off, and I'm convinced people just talk merry Christmas mt Lawrence because David Bowie is in it. Don't think I've seen his other films but after cruel story of youth I have very little interest of checking out his work, just a horrible film.
