    As a former reporter, I wrote an article about 30 years ago about the problem of air bags -- upon deployment - shattering eyeglasses, causing blindness. Not only do broken glass lenses cut the cornea, but also the corners of metal eyeglass frames. It's sad that nothing has been done in the last 30 years to correct this situation.

      If the frames are a danger too, and surely they would be, and since sunglasses at least when driving into a low sun are necessary, then airbags are the danger. They were ill-considered from the start IMO. Despite popular belief, regulatory agencies do not gather statistics of crash data to determine their efficacy. Once mandated by gov agencies, it is merely assumed they are effective and any statistics gathered are used essentially in bias confirming ways.

    • @steveolive9991
      @steveolive9991 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

      @@5metoo Because air bags are designed to protect the average size man (approx. 5 ft 8 in.) -- not the average size woman (approx 5 ft. 4 in.) -- the air bags are only dangerous to people who are greatly shorter. For example, if a person is slightly shorter than average (5 ft 6 in.), probably won't have any negative consequences when an air bag deploys. However, a person who is 5 ft. 4 in. or shorter will probably experience eyeglass/sunglass damage. Time to write your congressmen.

    Polycarbonate lenses saved my eye. One evening, I was working on a bed frame. I was using a lot of force to realign a peice of metal, and the wrench slipped. It hit the lense. And, the force of the blow caused the frame to cut my eyebrow and nose. The frame slipped into my eye after the initial impact, and it hurt. But, my eyebrow and nose absorbed most of the blow before it hit my eye. If the lense weren't polycarbonate, it would have broke, and the wrench would have hit my eye, along with broken pieces of glass or plastic.
    The lense was deformed slightly from the blow, but like the doctor in this video said, it didn't break after taking a significant impact. I thank God that the optometrist insisted on me getting polycarbonate lenses.

    ANYTHING in your vehicle not secured properly is a lethal weapon when experiencing any kind of collision. Basic physics show a 5lb purse becomes a 200lb purse when car is stopped at around 20mph. A water bottle becomes a fatal projectile when suddenly stopped, imagine how fatal a full hydro flask is flying through a car that is rolling at high speeds. When I started considering this concept years ago I read a story about someone who was killed in a car crash. They had their seatbelt on and the crash wasn’t enough to be fatal. What ended up killing them was the skateboard in the back seat. The velocity of the skate board hitting her neck snapped it and killed her immediately. Around that same time a friend had just survived rolling three times in her car and when I asked about how rough it was she said rolling was nothing, that the duffle bag hitting her the whole time did the most damage. A soft duffle bag full of clothes hurt her more than the seatbelt burns and bruises. I did a carseat safety class soon after reading the skateboard story and my friend’s wreck. When I asked the car seat specialist about my husband’s opened tool bags in his truck (to have someone else prove my point to him) she got visibly sick to her stomach and said our take home packet has a story about a 2 year old who was scalped by a soft sippy cup during a super minor accident. A soft sippy cup hit his head in a way that he needed hundreds of stitches. (cafemom.com/parenting/120581-almost_deadly_sippy_cup_incident) This car seat specialist very seriously told him a wrench would easily kill him if in an accident and if those bags are closed but not secured it’s even more dangerous to him AND our children. She shared that lap dogs flying around during a car accidents have killed humans and dogs too. Either Australia or New Zealand has an EXCELLENT commercial on 5 people getting into a car, 4 of them give one guy a hard time for not wearing his seatbelt as they all buckle up. He says it’s fine but then they are hit and while the car is rolling he bounces freely around the whole car. The commercial ends with paramedics and 5 bodies covered with sheets. Lesson I learned? ANYTHING not secured to the vehicle is a lethal projectile and I never once even considered my sunglasses!!! Do your research people, this is the kind of life saving information that we have control over. A beautiful takeaway I had from the international lock downs is to focus on what I can control and release what I can’t. Can I control a bug responsible for the common cold? No. Can I control unsecured lethal projectiles in my innately risky motor vehicle? Why yes I can. The craziest takeaway I gathered when going down this rabbit hole is the amount of research and information out there on the dangers of unsecured plastic water bottles in a vehicle yet I’ve never been informed of these known dangers by anyone in my 24 years of driving.
