    Imagine this album played in concert. And during the show, a 60ft high wall is slowly built from big Styrofoam blocks. The wall is used as a projector screen and during different songs the band pops up or out of the wall. Then at the end as the crowd chants "tear down the wall" it all comes crashing down for the last song. It was a show I'll never forget!

      I saw Roger Waters doing The Wall in 2012 in Toronto (I was only 11 when the album came out so didn't see the original tour) and it was absolutely mind-blowing - definitely one of my top 5 all-time shows.

    The trial is him finally realizing that he is the one hurting himself. The trial takes fully place in his mind. His whole life he went through life blaming others and his past trauma. Which gets into the whole point of the album. "Outside the wall“ the most important song on the album. We all have past trauma that we carry into our relationships with loved ones and how we raise our kids. But if we let down our walls and connect with people then we can end the cycle. And thats why the album loops.

      Great explanation! 😎👍
      I remember it being a very heavy and profound realization that it was all in his head after a few listens at 12-13 years old.
      Having survived a number of traumatic events by that age it really hit home very hard, and was quite the bitter pill to swallow.. the trial of the self or superego. It’s what inevitably happens to those who take a “hero dose” of psilocybin or similar psychedelic- the dismantling of the ego and honest examination and confrontation of one’s core self.
      I’d have to differ on “Outside” being the most important song though. It certainly is the profound summary of the album, which really puts it all into perspective.. but I would suggest that “Stop” is the most important, being the sudden moment of clarity and pivotal surrender of the self.. the change of heart to put an end to the madness.

    The album is actually a loop. Buried at the very end you can hear a voice say, "Isn't this whe-". If you gi back to the start of the album, it's the same music and you hear "'ere we came in?" "Isn't this where we came in." He slowly built the wall over time. Tore it down, and inevitably started building a new one.
    The trial is him trapped within in his own wall, not really being in an actual place. His mother, wife and teacher reappear.
    Live, a wall is built on the front of the stage throughout the performance of the album. At the end, the explosions the Wal collapses. The top blocks go forward towards the crowd before collapsing safely back onto the stage. They only played a limited anoint of these shows. They filmed it, but the theaters had to be too dark for the film to come out well. Bits are online.

    Bros! Imagine in the early 80s, a teen who had gathered enough pocket money and a few little jobs to acquire a HiFi set and half a dozen records, including The Wall. That's me! I wasn't smoking weed at that time, but man, I did tripping. This music has influenced all my life, on the artistic level as well as on the intellectual level. That's what I've been looking for ever since. Some art that makes you feel, that makes you think and that makes you talk. I commend you for listening to this masterpiece with such an open mind prompting reactions like "this sounds like hip-hop" or "A1 production" or "it's like a musical". I loved that, even if I'd have liked to hear more of your feelings and thoughts. Note: not their last album, after came The Final Cut, but the last great.
    I came later to the weed with Reggae and Hip-Hop sounds. Remark: Your wall is really missing a KRS-ONE's album cover. ;) Greetings from France!

    Great set of reactions, guys! Loved it! Can't wait for you to react to the movie when everything becomes a little clearer as far as the story goes. They toured this album for 4 weeks in 1980 and 4 weeks in 1981, doing a week of shows in select cities (LA, NY, London, and one of the German cities, I can't remember which) because the logistics and cost was too great to do more. 40ft inflatable puppets representing the different characters were used, and as the band played, crew built a wall separating the band from the audience until at the last word of side 2, the last brick was put in place. For the second half of the show, they played behind the wall except for during Comfortably Numb where Roger played the part of the doctor, singing his parts to the 40ft wall structure while wearing a white lab coat, and David appeared at the top of the wall to sing his parts and play the solos. Only at the end of The Trial during after chants of tear down the wall did the crew literally tear down the wall, complete with flashing lights and smoke. If you get a chance you should watch the live footage from the shows.
    The band did release one more album with this lineup in 1983 (but it was beyond fractured and everyone had enough of Roger's ego abuse) called The Final Cut, which was essentially a Roger solo album with members of Floyd playing on it when necessary. After Roger left and a vicious battle in the courts and media, Pink Floyd released 1987's A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, 1994's The Division Bell and had 2 MASSIVE world tours which gave 2 live albums. 1988's Delicate Sound Of Thunder and 1995's PULSE. The last new album was 2014's The Endless River, kind of a coda for the band and tribute to Rick who had died in 2008 of cancer. All well worth listening to as you can tell from your PULSE reactions.

      Great post, though I'll add it was David Gilmour's wife who made the problems. Netanyahu was murdering Palestinian tribal peoples on their own soil even then, and Roger was outspoken. And proven correct. He's not always correct, but he definitely was about lifetime criminal Netanyahu, close buddy of Trump-Putin. So that is important to understand as it still is where their problem is today. I do understand David's wife's sensitivity. Everyone is always afraid the Nazi creeps will lump in pedo Robert Kraft or his pimp Jeffrey Epstein as "all Jews", but that's complete nonsense. Here in America, our Great Jewish American community is beyond stellar. They don't have to shield criminals hiding behind real Holocaust horrors dishonoring survivors any more than Trump should be allowed to hide behind his fake Christianity. Criminals attract Criminals. Don't fall for the antisemitism just stay focused on criminal activities. Once the fools do the crimes, they are openly admitting they don't believe in God. So cut them loose that way. Nobody gets to say "I'm a billionaire!" and suddenly it's 'true' just because you said so. Well same is true of EVERY 'brand' of religion. If they believed in God, they wouldn't be helping Trump-Putin nor the Epstein Clients cover-up. David is doing what regarding fools like Robert Kraft, Dershowitz, Trump, Netanyahu?
      He's defending them.
      Proving Roger Waters to be CORRECT. So let's remember our Great Jewish American Merrick Garland has a job to do. NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW, per Merrick Garland. No matter who is who or how rich. The scumbags hiding behind fake faith gotta go. Remember: King George didn't like that Jewish merchants were doing well in the global depression and recession. He told Prince Wilhelm he wanted a ruling class of German peasants. By whatever means. Wilhelm desperate for approval from Buckingham Palace tapped Hitler to separate the Jews from their assets, then from society, to please Queen Elizabeth's daddy. David Gilmour's wife has to get serious about what made Hitler able to get that power. Disinformation and misinformation. Well who's trying to save scumbags like Kraft and Trump with LIES and Trumpaganda? Rupert Murdoch, Robert Maxwell's replacement.

    • @bookhouseboy280
      @bookhouseboy280 ปีที่แล้ว

      The whole "Roger's ego" thing has been blown completely out of proportion by those who blame him for the fracturing of Floyd. As if Gilmour and Wright had nothing to do with it. I don't consider Nick to have been part of the problem and I'll leave it at that. If The Final Cut is "essentially a Roger solo album" then what does that make A Momentary Lapse of Reason? The latter has only David while the former still has David, Nick, AND Floyd's conceptual songwriter, Roger. Whether or not TFC is a true Floyd album or not is debatable, but one thing is for sure, it's much more of an honest and genuine artistic statement and way more of a Floyd album than the "fair forgery" (Roger's words) that is AMLoR.

    • @ianfortier6796
      @ianfortier6796 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bookhouse Boy After every article, report, and interview (some given by Roger himself) how is it possible to not come to the conclusion that his ego swelled to the point where it caused the breakdown in the band? He said himself that he was Pink Floyd and downgraded the rest of the band to essentially session or support musicians. What about that doesn't scream egomaniac to you? Roger's lyrics and concepts are second to none, there's no doubt about that. Musically however, what grabbed the listener and engaged them, you know... since it's music and not poetry we're talking about, it's David and Rick that did the heavy lifting in making Roger's demos into the brilliant music they became. Roger's been on record as fighting with everyone his worked with, especially in the late 70s and early 80s. He asked Bob Ezrin to work with him on Radio KAOS but he declined saying he'd rather work with David and didn't need the headache Roger came with. Bottom line, Roger has tantrums and resorts to personal attacks if he doesn't get his own way, blames everyone else for his failings, and claims everything to do with the Floyd was him, and nobody else deserves credit. Nope, no ego issues there.

    Guys, I am so glad you hung in and worked your way through the whole album - and discovered what a piece of art it really is. There was one more Pink Floyd album after this, The Final Cut, but it's more of a Roger Waters solo album with the other guys along for the ride. It's another brilliant piece of work, and takes Roger's feelings on war even further, especially in addressing the Falkland Islands war with he rightly viewed as a horrible exercise in ego by Margaret Thatcher.

    The Final Cut was released in 1983 and featured everyone except Richard Wright on keyboards. He had been fired during The Wall, but he was kept on through the tour as a salaried sideman.

    They broke up after the next album, which is sort of the companion piece to The Wall. Its a lot of songs that were intended to end up on here but fit in The Final Cut better. The Final Cut is more direct and political. Not a lot of metaphors, whereas The Wall is one giant metaphor.
    The Final Cut is very clear that it's talking about Roger Waters post-war depression and the trauma of losing his father during the war.
    After that, Roger left the band. Pink Floyd would go on to release 2 more albums and then would retire as well (with a one time 20 min live reunion in 2008, and an all instrumental album being released in 2014 in honor of their keyboardist who had passed on.
    I hope you guys will get to check out The Final Cut. It's less of a story, and more of a concept like Dark Side of the Moon, but its Roger at his most vulnerable. I really mean that. If you thought Roger was opening up and being vulnerable here, just wait. Its the only album of the classic Roger era that you havent listened to so I really hope you guys will get to it some time.
    Great reaction guys, keep it up!

    It is clever, thought-provoking lyrics of Rorger Waters combined with exquisite composition of David Gilmour and Richard Wright (and Waters as well), mixed with exellent production, tonnes of genius and talent, and all mixed with hard work. The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall - this was the peak of Pink Floyd's genius music. However, let's not forget the previous, as well as later, albums. Perhaps they are not as excellent as those four, but still very good.

    This wasn't the end of Pink Floyd. Roger left, but David Gilmour went on with the rest of the band and made some really great albums like The Division Bell, A Momentary Lapse of Reason, and a few live albums namely the Pulse album where you get the incredible extended guitar solo by Gilmour at the end of Comfortably Numb.

    Roger Waters the bassist and main composer wrote the whole album with some input from Gilmour for Comfortably Numb and I Need A dirty girl. He still does it on his own as a solo artist even did it at the Berlin wall with guest singers when the wall fell in 89.

  • @Chris-oc4sn

    There are 3... Technically 4 more albums after The Wall, there's A Momentary Laps of Reason, The Division Bell (EXTREMELY UNDERRATED), and in 2018 they released a collection of unreleased works called Endless River in honor of the death of drummer Nick Mason, and in 1983 the album The Final Cut was released, which was basically an extension of The Wall a bunch of tracks that "didn't make The Final Cut” it could also be looked at as ironic because it was the last album that Roger Waters was on, however look for "Pink Floyd Live 8 reunion" I know it's on TH-cam, it's a great performance of GREAT SONGS and i believe is the first and last time Roger Waters performed with the band since his departure.. anyway I'm LOVING THE REACTIONS GUYS, SEEING HOW YOU GUYS LOOK AT IT FROM A MODERN MUSICIAN POINT OF VIEW CATCHING ALL THE SMALL DETAILS THAT SHOW JUST HOW AMAZING THEY WERE... HAD AN OPPORTUNITY IN 1994 TO SEE THEM AND MISSED OUT BECAUSE I WAS A POOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT.. LOL

  • @flubblert
    @flubblert ปีที่แล้ว

    Pink Floyd put out three more original albums after The Wall: "The Final Cut" 1983, "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" 1987, and "The Division" 1994.
    The last two were made without the input of Roger Waters, the brilliant Lyricist and conceptual leader of the band who left the group in 1985 over creative and artistic differences between him and David Gilmour. Roger was becoming more political and personal in his writing (The Wall was for the most part based on him), and Dave was not on board with the direction he was taking them. The atmosphere between the two had become so toxic that Roger decided to leave.. on his own.
    You'll recall the "Pulse" Concert that you've seen clips of is from 1994. Some 15 years after the release of "The Wall"

    there is much more in fact(; but it was their last album all together ( the keyboarder richard wright was fired by waters during the recordings). roger waters (the writer of the wall) leaves the band 1983 i think. but the rest of them moved on as pink floyd and had pretty much success. the divsion bell for example was a worldwide number one album.

  • @kevinohara2618
    @kevinohara2618 ปีที่แล้ว

    its roger waters that wrote the lyrics and came up with the concept, he has actually written an opera called CA IRA, its not bad for a opera, its about the french revolution,
    this wasnt the last album before waters left, the next one called THE FINAL CUT was, its an album that is good but not all like it, some see it as a roger waters solo but its not, if the final cut is a solo then there are many other pink floyd albums that could be called one, if you like emotionally well written songs sung very emotionally then it is for you to enjoy.
