So I jus realized in Erykah Badus live version of "Tyrone" at the soul train awards, the keyboardist plays the exact same chord progression! One of the most subtle nods to dilla I've ever heard
Joe Sample is the original keyboardist for Minnie Ripertons “Inside My Love” which Dilla loved sampling. You can hear it across him and his contemporaries such as Erykah who you mentioned.
J Dilla was a drummer by heart. His drums are the only reason his songs sound so organic. Real drums are always goated. No trap beat can ever top actual drums

Just found my way back to this song! Used to play this all the time in high school but it was the Proof Dilla tribute track. “I can’t believe u gone I can’t believe u gone…” damn good tribute. Anyways found it again thru the Minnie ripperton song being played on soulection radio #276 w/ Isaiah Rashad who rapped over the same sample in Rope//Rosegold ft Sir. All great music!

Smh. This is lo-fi 90s mixtapes quality. Back when mixTAPES were actually on tapes. It wasn't mastered for radio or for an album and is coming straight outta Dilla's basement. It's no surprise it's this lo-fi. And that's cool anyway
my man Dilla sampled his BREATH
I thought i was the only one that heard that
in a lot of beats you can very very quietly hear him breathing or mumbling words to go with the melody, it’s a genius thing to do tho
Indeed

mixing equipment hasn't sounded any better since the 70's. the tracks are deliberately low fi, it's part of the style of dilla's music.
