Troupe Master Grimm fight is a beautiful and graseful dance that requires you to follow the rythm creating a beautiful harmony between sound and form. Nightmare King Grimm throws all that worthless crap into the garbage and turns that into a breakdance where for every mistake you're getting hit in the balls with a sledgehammer.
Ironically enough, NKG became a dance for me. At one point in GodHome, I went into his lvl 2 fight while overcharmed. I didn't get hit once and I hit him during any downtime between or during his attacks. There was no rest with the exception being his pillar attack that covers the arena. He shot bats out, I waited just a second before dash slashing him, he comes barreling in like a living missile and I hit him on his way down and hop over him, striking him again, he balloons, I Abyss Shriek once then back off and fire a blast from afar as I dodge the onslaught. It was an amazing fight.
Worth pointing out that the instrumentation for the Nightmare Troop is unique when compared against the soundscape of the rest of the game. There ARE no electric guitars in the rest of the game’s music. The music is also largely classical for the majority of the game, putting emphasis on piano, harp, occasional string or ambient choral, reserving brass for bombastic fights. It is a LOVELY soundtrack. But the Nightmare Troupe buck that trend so hard they throw this anachronistic MAYHEM that is this guitar and organ combo. I like to think that the use of the guitar and organ reinforces the *alien* nature of the characters associated. They are so far removed from the events of Hallownest that even the instruments they use in their themes don’t exist anywhere else. There is also a very thematic element of clashing the old age’s pipe organ, a powerful, ancient and unmoving instrument that has become associated with piety and tradition, with an electric guitar, an instrument of the youth, rebellion, and freedom. This clash between what is old and what is new adds fuel to the message behind the song. This is to say there are *metaphors within the instrumentation.* And looking through this critically has added a new depth for me for when I go back into the game. Sorry for the essay. Thanks again for reacting, Marco!
It’s amazing the fact that just from the ost for the fight, he can tell that Grimm is sinister, with some elements of possibly seeming deranged or psychopathic, most likely referencing the Nightmare King battle to come.
Grimm Troupe. What a great DLC. Just fighting Grimm was so heart pumping and anyone who fought Grimm in the Arena knows how hard this bug can be. Imagine fighting the Mantis Lords at the same time then multiplying it by 2. The fight is tense, the fight is grueling, and Grimm shall bring only his best for the greatest show.
*Light The Way With A Fleeting Spark,* *Through Our dance We Shall Honour Him!* *Feed The Child Of The Beating heart,* *Sing The Prase Of The Master Grimm!*
Oh man, I love Grimm so much as a character, as a boss, and as an inspiration for this track. The Grimm Troupe are a cult who consume the nightmares of fallen kingdoms to allow new ones to spring up, unburdened by the lingering pains of what came before, and Grimm himself is reincarnated through this process, to lead his weird death circus.
"You don't carry an organ in your bag" Doraemon: Are you sure? The organ fits perfectly the situation with this vampire-like character, fire attacks, creepy environment...
This song definitely feels like an homage to the original Castlevania's "Universal Horror prog rock opera" soundscape, adapted to Hollow Knight's style. It even brings in the electric guitar which iirc is entirely absent from the HK soundtrack up to that point.
Lmao that face Marco makes at 03:23 right before stopping is basically that [ happiness noise ] dog meme >1845 mosh pit I'm fucking dying this is why I watch your videos
The organ was not intended as a religious instrument. It was used in Byzantium for ceremonies, as a symbol of the wealth of the imperial family. It's just that when one such organ was presented to Emperor Charlemagne, there was no building in the entire Frankish Empire that could accommodate it. Except the church. Here they put it in the church. Since then, it has become a tradition that it is, as it were, a religious instrument.
NKG is hands down the hardest boss in the game (AbsRad is close but NKG made me His Bitch) and he gets the best track to match him. In-game there's one attack during which the music intensifies and not even the isolated track can match that moment. Absolutely incredible to have beat over you in the game.
I am forever going to picture people in 1845 mosh pit, wigs, and fancy clothes flying with some dudes with dyed black wigs, and studs on their clothes, and boots whenever I face the Troupe😂 You hit nail on the head with your thought of very Halloween-esq, malformed reverence with the heavy metal splash. Before or as you play this you gotta listen to Nightmare King 🤌🏻
Combine rock/metal and classical music and I'm instantly interested. That's why I love Castlevania music so much. There are dozens of rock/metal songs that use chord progressions taken directly from classical music in games like Castlevania or Actraiser. "The Grimm Troupe" here is another gorgeous example. Those drum beats in the background SLAP!
The Grimm Troupe and the bosses that followed were probably my favorite moments in Hollow Knight. It was just such a satisfying battle and the music is peak. This is an entire different matter, but if you haven't heard it before, I would recommend you listen to the Approaching Cynthia theme as well as her battle theme from Pokémon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum. It's quite the iconic song 😊
The reason why I like Grimm Troupe more than NK is cuz Nightmare King is just GOING since the start, it's intense and it sounds like death and I love it so much but I think the sudden shock that guitar gives you in the middle of Grimm Troupe and then the drums hit you on the face is just SO fun. No matter how many times I listen to it, I still gets me super hyped up as they fade in, I enjoy it a lot.
One of my favourite boss themes of all time! The Grimm Troupe and Nightmare King are pure epicness wrapped into a melody, such an equally elegant and foreboding theme for one of the most well-designed characters in a game chock full of well-designed characters, and such a fitting theme for what I unequivocally consider the peak of Hollow Knight's combat!
Grimm is local God fo Nightmares (and defeating him is to help him reborn anew), same as Radiance (main boss) is corrupted God of Dreams. There also Dream/Nightmare version of it (same as there harder version of battle in Dreams). Also, Grimm Troupe - is circus Troupe, that's why there is this circus rhytm, but it is twisted and dark version of it. And they are not evil, thought they are twisted and dark. Before Pure Vessel (from Arena DLC) - Nightmare King Grimm was the hardest fight in the game.
WELP. A year ago, I said in your Sealed Vessel (Hollow Knight fight) video I wanted you to hear this... After a year of not checking out, here I am, and not dissapointed.
I recommend looking up an image of Troupe Master Grimm. The moment you do, you'll be thinking "Yeah, this looks like a dude with that kind of theme song"
@@IdentifiantE.S Absolutely, I still think about it often. Randomly coming across another player and just having a fight to the death was fun. A really interesting game that was unfortunately overlooked.
Especially with the context of the game, the first part feels a bit playful, cheeky. It's just Grim having a little dastardly dance. Then we hit the Nightmare King and now it shifts to truly intense.
People are constantly warning us about the Troupe and getting mad at it’s master (who, *SPOILER ALERT* morphs into the body of his, I can only assume artificial, “””””””””child””””””””” and becomes a baby bat to prevent himself from getting weak), but the only people they actually hurt are the people who help them in their ritual, who have to be really impressive BEFORE THE TROUPE EVEN SHOWS UP. Hell, all the ritual does is grow the Grimmchild and transfer the actual Grimm into its body to keep him energized and powerful, like the higher being he has the birthright to being!
3:05 this part right here reminds me of a phrase in on of my high school marching band shows. I think it was our space show that had a bunch of the planets and stuff like that. I'll have to check. Edit: ok i just checked and it's actually the very end of our metamorphosis show from the year after the space show.
So I actually heard this song for the first time through a fan version/cover. From what I'm hearing all the original sounds are there but they added a singer and lyrics to it. Essentially Grimm is singing along with the song. I'm kind of curious what you'd think of that version of the song. It's called Grimm remastered with lyrics by (the channel is) man on the Internet. (Make sure it's the remastered one as he does have an older version) Anyway really like this video!

Marco, my man, can we ask you to break down the OST for Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous? Not only does it have a kickass orchestral main theme, but also several tracks that thematize Mythic transformations you can go through in the game (from angels and demons to dragons and undead sorcerers). Let's see if you can repeat your feat of guessing half the game from the soundtrack alone, like you did with Mechanicus! :D
Hey idk what happened, I left a comment asking you to react to Impeded by Aidan Gold, a track for the Strawberry Jam mod for the game Celeste. I guess because I left the link in the comment, TH-cam might have thought I was a bot despite me clarifying I wasn't. But basically it sums up to how you were talking about rising and falling pitch symbolizing stakes and lost progress, so this track came to mind because both these elements are combined to show impediment of progress...
