    I'd be wiling to hazard that Robert started really damaging his voice right around then. This is right after Led Zep's fourth album, and they were starting to really stretch out their live set. By then, their shows were starting to push three hours, and I wouldn't exactly count on him to do proper warmups and take care of his voice.
    Edit: Lmao you mention hydration and diet and making good choices. These guys' good choices were a little drugs and alcohol instead of a lot

    • @samgamblewhite8600
      @samgamblewhite8600 5 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      He opened w immigrant song at every show for just under 3 years, and he had to sing over Page Jones and Bonham. He did it without warmups so I'm not surprised his voice got fucked.

    • @christinapierce8476
      @christinapierce8476 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Sam Gamble White Exactly, that’s why his voice didn’t always sound the best live; so people shouldn’t excessively criticize him, or any other rock singer who performs live for that matter.

      Might have been said elsewhere, but it also bears mentioning that Zeppelin had a relentless touring schedule in the early (Atlantic Records-era) days. Those long shows with the number of shows they were playing had to have had an accelerated effect on his voice

    Beth Roars One thing to remember when assessing why exactly his vocals started to go by 1972-73, is that Led Zeppelin were absolute ROAD WARRIORS back then. They were one of, if not the hardest working band in rock/metal at that time, doing more than 300 shows a year all over the world. Maybe just a couple of months off until that point where he required the surgery. Zeppelin was enormous. Rarely played to an audience less than 20,000 a night. So that's most likely the cause, just sheer wear & tear from constant touring. This particular audio recording is from the LA Forum in '72, although the video footage is from earlier when they visited Australia.
    If you want to hear Plant at his most powerful, I hope someone suggests to you "I Can't Quit You Babe" from 1970, at the Royal Albert Hall.

    • @dickcnormous4202
      @dickcnormous4202 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Dont forget he smoked and drank too. His voice was more scrarchy for the 73 tour, but if you listen to the Physical Graffiti album which was recorded in 74 you can really hear how much more raspy his voice is on Kashmir and Trampeled Underfoot and also how Page buried his vocals in themix due to his loss of range. His voice was completely shot for the entire 75 US tour.

    The greatest thing about Robert is that he remained unique even after losing his wailing voice, in fact, his latter voice is so much more expressive.

    Hi Beth, I had the great pleasure of see Led Zeppelin in the 70’s 71,72,73,and final time 3/5/75 in Dallas and just wanted to let everybody know LZ played 3 to some almost four hr shows and the band gave it 100 percent every time. If you look at TH-cam say 73 for instants you will see a show in Az three days later Tx two days later La and so on and they did this from 69 - 75 non stop. I think by 73 they had matured into something magical and by 75 they were and unstoppable juggernaut, and as for Robert Plant there will never be another one this I can promise you.

      The problem with that song is that Phil Anselmo only attempted to sing the cool high pitched falsetto ending to the song once live on video and he was pretty wasted so it doesn't sound anything like the album version, which is a pity as it's one of my favourite Pantera songs and that's the part that kicks it up from good metal song to great metal song. Here's the only live video I've found where he attempts it th-cam.com/video/fcaeMNp68_w/w-d-xo.html

    around that time I went to a concert and was in the standing section near the stage- a few minutes in, Plant's microphone went out- and as loud as the band was, he just kept singing and his voice was so booming and projected that we could still hear him fine(then again, he was probably doing a lot of damage to himself)

    Plant's voice took a beating on the early tours. He also received treatment for cord nodules in 1973 and possibly 1974. You can hear a drop in range and a harsher timbre on later albums like Physical Graffiti.

Amazingly he had a pretty deep voice in the few songs they played towards the end of concerts. If I had a time machine a huge concert from Zep like this is where I would go. There are a few flat notes here and there. Because back in 1972 they actually sang their songs and didn't wait to autotune it before they released the concert album. People today who only listen to current singers have no idea what an actual voice sounds like when it SINGS.

    Should be mentioned, as a discount, that Immigrant song used to be the first song played on their sets, and the "aAAAhh" screams at the beginning were dubbed in later for the recording. So most likely his voice was still warming up so to say. Also worth mentioning, that some people are referring how their sets went on for three and a half hours, while that's true, let's not forget Jimmy Page's monstrous solos and Moby Dick which accounted, surely, for almost half of the time where Plant didn't sing. Nice video!

    Oh, and 5:03... Absolutely! Used to get me all the time. I've stressed to people that once you discover that part of the voice, it can be relatively easy to keep it up there (if that's a strength of your voice anyway), but it's moving through the passaggio (and for me it was moving back down more than up through it) where I tended to struggle. In fact, one of the things that may have been challenging for Plant during his '71-'72 years was how much he was moving up and down through his bridge during his phrasing... you'll hear it a LOT on songs from the first two albums that he was performing live during this era.

  • @zeppelinmexicano

    This was a great choice, Beth, as he still was pre-surgery, and also because of the instrumental part to end it. That's not on the studio version and I think it adds a lot because, as you pointed out, there is the this odd timing going on between rhythm section and Jimmy's guitar. Is that called syncopation? Dunno, but it's done so tightly that I find it to be a great example of how tight the band was. They were unconscious and tied together by telepathy of some kind.
