I’m honestly surprised people don’t realize how much money it takes to build the world around Gorillaz; the album, the tours, promo, animation, merch, it can’t all be done by Damon and Jamie alone, even if they are owned by Warner.
when they got that character from powerpuff girls, it barely spoke because sending scripts to cartoon network to be approved was expensive itself as well
Gorillaz effectively died because EMI wouldn't pay out. I had to wonder how on earth it ever came back, when I heard Warner bought EMI out, it clicked.
This was the first ever album I fully listened to front and back, Itbwas my favorite album for so long... I still love this album to death.
Hands down my favorite album of all time. It difficult for me to listen to any song from Demon Days without listening to the whole thing at once.
It's like reading a good book.
first album I bought was the college dropout by Kanye. That was the album that impacted me the most. I know a lot of people don’t like Kanye or think he’s overrated or whatever but I always thought damon albarn and Kanye west were both like super geniuses because I really loved gorillaz first album and demon days probably even more and I kinda wish they made a project together because to me, they were both super geniuses and I remember one of my friends was super into danger mouse and mf doom at the time. Damn, memories lol
@@shanesonksen1515 danger mouse has a way of doing that. St. Elsewhere is (probably controversially) one of my favourite albums, which he produced.
I love how the lore behind Gorillaz is just as interesting as the actual Gorillaz lore.
Feel Good Inc is actually the reason I got into being a musician. It made me learn bass, I then moved onto guitar, now I'm in a band. Thanks Gorillaz
Black_Leg_Sanji are you self taught ?
@@valentinarmenta4982 nah I took lessons. Worked like crazy tho
Speaking of *B A S S* Davie504 do be looking like Murdoc
Listened to this album non stop for months. Didn't actually care for Feel Good Inc. that much, but heard the Kids with Guns aseline one night and had to buy the album next day.
Still my favorite song on the album to this day. The bass is perfect and the chorus just really hits home, relevant today as much as it was then, and that breakdown at the end is incredible.
I listen to all of Gorillaz' albums every now and then, but Demon Days is probably the one I've put the most hours into. It just has a very nice progression when you listen to all the songs in order.
It's their magnum opus IMO.
Quick Reminder: New gorillaz track with slowthai and Slaves this Thursday!!
What?
@@vinnyreed723 yeah, go to bbc's website
woww
Hell yeah!
track? Nah a whole album 😳 (not all out at the same time but like AN ALBUM!!)
First time I heard Gorillaz was when I was four. I finally began to seek them out when I was 14. Their attitude really affected the way I chose which artists and genres to listen to. It's always nice to see people talking about them :) Can't wait for the video to premiere.
I see a lot of parallels to my life here. Demon Dayz came out when i was around 14 and its made a huge impact on how I take in music. Down to Danger Mouse being my favorite producer of all time who helped produce Demon Dayz, and later went on to produce from everyone from Asap Rocky to The Black Keys. Really opened my eyes to what people can do with different genres blended. That's really the spirit of Gorillaz.
First time I heard Gorillaz I was about 24 😢
I remember going to Target to get this album as a teenager. My moms boyfriend took me. Told him, I wanted Demon Days because of Feel Good Inc. He said, you want one cd for one song? I said yes. (Back in those days, I didn't know how to hear the rest of the album without purchasing the entire thing). My moms bf at the time said I was an idiot for getting the cd for one song. Well, Gorillaz are now one of my most favorite bands of all time. I know you called me an idiot, Tony, but you still bought me the CD. Thank you.
Im forever gonna be waiting for that Gorillaz movie :(
But whats the biggest missed opportunity was Gorillaz would have made the perfect Comic Book! And since Jamie made Tank Girl anyways.. Just imagine.
I mean there was the docu movie
They are making a tv show
Untitled Name Gang that’s true!
one just got announced!!
NETFLIX

Oh my god
“Reject false icons”
Appears in an Apple commercial. 😂
Bradley Swanson which one?
That's pretty cringeworthy
@@paodiaz2381 Bradley's highlighting the apparent hypocrisy of the album having the promotional slogan of "Reject False Icons" which itself is a call to reject consumerism and fads/trends yet having one of the albums main songs appear in an Apple commercial, which itself fosters the exact ideology that "Reject False Icons" seems to rail against. However, the songs may be written by Gorillaz but that doesn't necessarily mean they own the songs. EMI owns the rights to the songs and the decision to bid it off to Apple for use in their commercial could have been made by EMI and not Gorillaz. At the end of the day EMI is a company, a business, and they have a responsibility to their owners/shareholders regardless of if they are publicly traded or privately owned. The decision could have been made without Damon/Jamie's input at all.
@@xaayer The latest album absolutely encapsulates this. Damon and/or Jamie are just hypocrites. I don't know what the angle is, but the message is flat-out compromised and DOA.
@@Hysteria98 I would hesitate calling them hypocrites... Like I said, the decision to use the music in consume-related commercials could have been made completely without them.
Demon Days, My favorite Album of all time in my lifetime.
This is the 1st thing I bought after returning home from my military deployment in Summer 2005. It took me 5 days to finish the album because I kept listening to the same songs over and over again. Love it!!!
This is my nomination for greatest album of all time. Damon Albarn at his peak. Pure perfection. Everything from the album artwork to the twangs in November has come, from the guitar line in all alone to the storyline behind demon days, it’s all as good as it gets.
100%. Despite its success it still feels so overlooked whenever people start discussing their best albums or their favourite albums of all time. I always feel so alone when I include this one in my list!
I agree, this is my 2nd favorite album of all time
You crushed this. Well formulated and executed. Learned a lot about an album I was playing on repeat left and right in ‘05.
I was all over the debut so this one was highly anticipated.
Feel Good Inc was my jam instantly. It was so unique and had spectacular tempo shifts. I was relentlessly trying to put people on the Gorillaz with it.
Thx for the video.
I think the way Demon Days was performed, might be the best way. The visuals are central, and the silhouettes made it mysterious. I don't mind seeing Damon jumping on the foreground tho.
Me: Can we have feel good inc.?
Mum: We have feel good inc. at home
Feel good inc. at home: 00:21
So good
Demon Days is one of the best albums of all time, in my opinion. It's just so insanely good. One night I dropped acid alone in my house, and I listened to it beginning to end, and it was one of the best nights of my life. Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head is a standout track, along with Kids With Guns. The production is so tight, Danger Mouse really deserves some credit on this one. The music almost has a voice of it's own, like on O Green World, when I was tripping the beat itself took the form of a monkey who was silly and whimsical. The notes sounding like the mischevious monkey was laughing at me. I can still hear it if I listen to it now.
i remember seeing the video for Feel Good Inc. on MTV when i was 13 and having the chorus and animation instantly burned into my brain. this album is a landmark in music history. thank you for this well-made and informative video
I was 9 years old when this album came out and I instantly was in love. Still one of my favourite albums to date! Im 23 now
1st album that I ever fully listened to in one sitting. My second favorite behind Ok Computer
Finally talking about a record that I have in my collection myself. Gorillaz will always have a special place in my heart. First "band" I ever fully called my favorite. Ever since I was a kid, and the cartoons caught my pee brained attention span.
Pretty sure the phrase is “pea brained” 😂
Damn lol that just made me chuckle aloud. I didn't realize i said "pee brained" that is what I meant though. I didnt have a head full of piss or something back then lmao.
This is so cool and ironic. I was listening to this album getting dinner tonight and walking back to the gym. It is so iconic and one of my favorite albums of all time. Thank you guys so much for doing this video Damon Albarn and Danger Mouse really created a masterpiece with this work. Definitely my favorite Gorillaz album, one of the few albums that I remember buying the day it came out and I didn't know what to expect. I was completely blown away and it still captures that feeling on every single listen.
”The fun feelgood vibe of the first record”
Excellent video ! I used to listen to Demon Days on loop back when I was working for Virgin Megastore in Beirut. Still listening to it today and ripped the audio from the DVD's of concerts recorded in Manchester and Harlem.
Love the video, but just a note, it's Gorillaz, not The Gorillaz
This is what I came here to say! At least they didnt call the album Demon Daze
and at that moment, justin timberlake turned around and added the single most important contribution to the band;
" Drop the 'The' ".
Like when Talking Heads made a live album called "This Name of This Band is Talking Heads" because people kept adding "The"
I don't think it really matters.
ok.
I remember I picked up one of their cds back I'm the day where u could scan a CD at a station in store and hear some tracks play. I loved it so much but was told not to listen to it by my mom, but heard them again later when I was 15 or 16 and never stopped listening or following them since. Gorillaz are my #1 favorite always!
The first album I ever bought on CD, I don’t see this album as anything less than perfect to me it’s that close to my heart
I'm actually just now starting to get into Gorillaz. I grew up with "Feel Good Inc." And always thought it was a pretty cool song, but I never realized how much of a backstory there is behind the discography. Listened to "Demon Days" for the first time today, and I was blown away. When I heard that MF Doom feature, my jaw dropped. There wasnt a single song on this album that I didnt enjoy, and I am excited to learn more about this group and dive deeper into their music. "Every Planet We Reach Is Dead" is hands down one of the best songs I've ever heard, PERIOD.
By far my favorite Album they created, so many memories as a child!
recently fallen back in love with gorillaz and blur, basically anything to do with Damon albarn - what a talented guy 💓
Your degrees and experience paid off , this was a very well made video. Your 60s/70s set is perfect, as well as your line delivery and imagery. The only negative thing noticeably apparent is you kept saying "THE Gorillaz" instead of Gorillaz.
Rest In Power MF DOOM (1971-2020) The Masked Lyrical Supervillain 🦹🏾♂️ ✊🏾🙏🏻
The album changed my life. When I first heard feel good inc I listened to it like 6 times that day. Now every time I listen to Demon Days I have to listen to it all the way through, and it brings a smile to my face.
This album defined mine and my close friends lives after high school. Sitting around playing video games and cranking some amazing tunes.
This album was the first one that really challenged my ideas of what music could be and that emotion could be fully articulated through it.
First and probably only album that has made me cry, no lie.
It's DAAAAAAARREEEEEE!
You have made a perfect road map for me to follow, on how this album came into being. Very informative and well done. Thank you.
This is my favorite album of all time, and I loved how much I learned. I had no idea other names were almost chosen or about the movie. Absolutely phenomenal video! If you’re looking into other topics, you should look into something on Spiritualized and Spaceman J
One of my absolute favorite albums to this day
I sat here and watched this whole video. Dang, good view into the world of an album that was a big part of my life.
Gorillaz is one of my favourite bands so thanks for doing this video, also If Twin Peaks ever does another season, you should definitely be a detective on the show, you got the look down and everything.
Another Twin Peaks season was supposed to come out this year, right? Or were those just rumors?
Demon Days was a huge inspiration for me to start creating my own music, and diving into the realm of recording and layering tracks. That album and Think Tank
This is one of my favourite albums of all time! Just fantastic from start to finish.
Very thorough and well done mini-doc on the album and related info. GREAT JOB!
One of the best album ever in my heart, cried during live
You’re channel really deserves so much more. Thank you so much for putting in all this effort to make such great content.
Outstanding content dude, such a shame this a criminally underrated channel. Keep it up, you'll blow up in no time!
I love when you do 2000's vinyl reviews and stories. Such nostalgia.
I said it for many years now that Damon Albarn is the David Bowie of this generation, a musician who will go down many different routes and doesn't churn out the same album twice. From Blur, to Gorillaz to The Good, The Bad, The Queen to his solo work to his work as a film composer. The guy's a genius, not many of those around today.
I think Demon Day's is probably his masterpiece, along with Blur Self Titled or Modern Life is Rubbish. I think follow up Gorillaz album Plastic Beach is every bit as great. The following albums aren't as strong but still got some fantastic stuff on them.
Definitely. Amazing the same guy wrote songs like Sunday Sunday and these Gorillaz tracks.
Mr B My favourite album of his is probably The Great Escape but with the exception of G Sides and Dr Dee, I like all of his albums to a certain extent
Demon days envelopes itself in detail and eclectic nuance. It unravels with time and maturity. A GREAT ALBUM.
One of my favorite albums of that decade. Thanks for the fantastic video as always. Very well researched as usual and I learned a lot in this one. BTW - While some may call it a sell out, I personally am happy with the hook up with SkillShare. I think you deserve a bump in revenue based on the product you produce. I've also used SkillShare for Premiere Pro and After Effects references.
Man you're work is amazing!
It doesn't even seem that old an album to me....but I'm getting old!
Great analysis as ever thanks VR 👍🏻
This video made me get back into gorrilaz and now they're teasing there next album
Excelent video! Really really well explained! Thanks for doing it!
dangermouse created the psychedelic pop sound we know today: demon days, gnarls barkley, black keys, portugal the man, beck, RHCP, jack white....sparklehorse...MF DOOM....
There was nothing cooler in (Winter) 2005**, than to have spent hours downloading the music video for Feel Good, Inc. over dial up, and loading it onto your brand spanking new iPod Video. Man that felt so dope at the time.
Ian Fitzpatrick You do know better technology was available in 2015, don’t you?
@@sinista6536 LMFAO. The hell happened here? 2005 was what I meant to type my dude. Oops.
Ian Fitzpatrick haha
Awesome record and great vid as always!! Gorillaz is one of my favourite bands ❤️
When I first heard the song Demon Days I felt my breath get taken away. My face melted on the spot.
Demon Days was pretty much my entire high school experience. I went to school and then after school I'd listen to Demon Days. i know the album front to back and it's amazing. That being said even with all that it's still not my favorite Gorrillaz album. Amazing song writing and production though. Love November Has Come and Every Planet.
I've always felt this was their best album because of the way that Damon Albarn and Danger Mouse worked together, it's definitely the most successful album after the first one. The way the compositions were arranged by Danger Mouse was amazing, especially on songs like "Kids With Guns". He also became one of my "producers to watch" after The Grey Album dropped because that was one of the best mash-ups (production wise) ever created. I'm a fan of later Gorillaz albums, as well as other Danger Mouse productions, however I still think that this might be both artist's best effort to date.
Never knew they ever played Fire Coming Out Of The Monkeys Head live, much less that they ever did it with Dennis Hopper there. You always make super informative videos.
Gotta say, I still love the first album the most. It's always been a harsh competition, but the rawer, less pop-inspired sound with harsher instrumental tones just makes it for me. Much more unique. Got it when it came out and I was only a nipper at 6. Fucking incredible and it's never left me.
Love this insight on the album, amazing job!
Great documentary here! Such an incredible album.
I love Demon Days. It was a very big part of my life at the time it came out. It was my freshman year of high school. Brings me right back to that time period when I listen to it.
About the same time for me, funny enough, even though I liked the first album, I never heard Demon Days except for the singles for years. Listened to the whole thing for the first time in 2014 while I was tripping alone on acid. One of the chief experiences of my life. I will never forget that night, or this album, or how it had me absolutely transfixed. To this day one of my very favorite albums.
Love this album. Also love the first too. Great work Vinyl Geek I salute you !
Amazing video, keep up the good work 🖤
This album is easily one of the best of the 21st century
Demon Days was probably my first ever music album I ever bought that was by an actual music group, as opposed to the countless WWE theme songs and 8-bit/16-bit video game soundtracks that I used to download off Frostwire.
It's not "The Gorillaz" it's "DiGiorno" .
This.
Is this a jojo reference???
DiGiorno DiGiovanna
I love the making of videos, this one's great please cover more of the Gorrilaz
Yasssssss please do more Gorillaz on the future! Nice job
Wow I love how much danger mouse loves the elephant six, his neutral milk hotel shirt in the clips warms my heart ❤
Above and beyond video production. Please make more.
first album I ever wanted to buy i'd listen on repeat on youtube as a kid
That's fan art by Glowrillaz @ 2:04. Not official.
He didn't say it is official.
Jesse someone else noticed!
One of my favorite albums of all time.
Well put together video my friend, I dig it.
Love your style, man. Thanks for your work.
Ahh, I remember when I first heard Demon Days album! When I finished it I said to myself, every song on there was outstanding. Love that album.
Bruh I just listened to this a few days ago for the first time. Mind blown
One of my favourite TH-cam channels discusses one my all time favourite records, love it 😊
Another great review.
i excpected the facts to be interesting, but youve exceeded my expectations. Lovely video, thouroughly engaged
great insights and look at a classic album.. thank you
it's a great album. Well mixed/mastered for sound quality.
I remember buying this at Virgin Records in Hollywood back in the day. One of my favorites of all time.
Top 3 in my favorite album of all time!
3:57 - 2D and 3D together.
I'm seeing Blur's 13 and Think Tank in the background. Does this mean you're going to review them anytime soon? Or any Blur album for that matter? Because YES I would totally watch that.
Excellent video by the way, there were many things I didn't know about the album before this, now I appreciate it even more! Thank you
The timing of this album was perfect--the same month as high school graduation. It set the tone 4 me expanding my Hip-Hop musically, which ultimately led 2 me connecting with and collaborating with music legend George Clinton of Parliament Funkadelic. I begged George 2 get on a Gorillaz record; but when I noticed that a famous musician from each of Gorillaz' 1st 3 albums is dead (Ibrahim Ferrer, Ike Turner, and Bobby Womack respectively), I figured maybe G could skip that team up lol
my favorite album
OOh I’m so happy this is here.
6 albums and a movie
Amazing insight. Well done.
Adam from San Diego. (We hung out at Kessler’s going away party)
Phenomenal video!!!
Such unique style of videos! It's insane - 5 stars on yelp, would recommend
1 of a kind band incredible concepts!
Great Video!
