Damon Albarn is my favorite music creator of all time. His works are deeply important to me. Most of his work have this deeply emotional and existential pit that I just can’t get from most creators. Sure, all his songs are catchy and awesome tunes and whatnot, but at their core, they are very melancholic and dark, even the ones where he collaborates with others. I don’t want to say he’s a naturally depressing person - not at all. I want to say that he’s an extremely emotional being, and as closed off as he might be about himself, his music is very telling, which is a point brought up in the video - it’s his way of connecting. I’m just rambling at this point, and there doesn’t really seem to be a point to what I’m saying, so I’ll just leave it with this: this video is very on the nose. It’s deliberate and comprehensive, and really encapsulates my perspective on Damon quite well. I appreciate the video, is what I’m trying to say, haha.
Hahah no worries about rambling. Sometimes that can be a good thing. Just talking without having a specific goal or purpose to point towards. I'm so happy to hear that is music has meant that much to you. And it's awesome how this video alligns with how you view him too. When i think about it, Damon never really changed that much from when he started out in Blur. His music did.
Finally, someone do him justice. This man worth much in music, and his music from Blur-Gorrilaz-TGTB&TQ-RJ&TM, and his solo album, he is absolutely fascinating. Do Graham Coxon next, he made some pretty electric solo albums over the years. "The Golden D" is my favourite solo album from him. Thanks for some good videos anyway. Greetings from Indonesia.
Musicsavedme his noisy distorted guitar from his Blur day is magical and he even getting wilder in the Golden D. sure yeah we need him to get shined and appreciated more not just coz his guitar works but also as a songwriter. i personaly nicknamed him Sweet Noisy Nerd xD hehe
Damon Albarn is one of my favourites as well!! Creative force during the Britpop era and Gorillaz age. Always thought Blur as a more creative and diverse band compare to Oasis. He kept on pushing boundaries and I hope you are going to do Graham Coxon for the next video =) P/S, Mac Demarco voice is almost similar to Damon
I used to be indifferent about music, ok but didn’t think it was anything special. Until I listened to Gorillaz. The sounds and the stories just curb stomped me into a realization, that music is important and we need it. Thank you, Mr Albarn
Listened to Blur and Gorillaz at two very different periods of my life and I must say that he is a genius and I will always remember his voice as the soundtrack to my youth
Damon is one of those people who've inspired me to make music and all in all become a better person. Was stoked when i saw this in my notifications. Hope to see more quality stuff like this in the future
I like to say Damon is somehow my spiritual father. I grew up listening to Gorillaz when I was 7 or 8 years old since my father bought Demon Days and instantly fell in love with such a fucking beautiful voice which then made me discover his many projects which is unbelievable only one man can create so many different stuff and keep relevant. Even though I'm now 20 and I'm into other bands and genres, I keep coming back to him and can't help feeling nostalgic. The Good, The Bad & The Queen is a band you didn't mention but is quiet interesting and I hope someday he will do a second album.
Hmm yeah true I didn't mention that band. But I had never heard of that band before I started researching this video. It's not one of his most successful projects then? But what you're saying about his ability to stay relevant and create good music with such variation is very true. Looking forward to his second album.
Meeting Damon Albarn is definitely on my bucket list...you should’ve mentioned that he refused to play live 8 in 2005 because of the lack of black artists, the organisers eventually got more black artists to play and he still refused... mad respect for this guy.
Probably because they got more black artists but not born and raised in Africa, so his point was still valid that it sent the wrong message about Africa not being able to help itself and Europeans/Americans being the heros 😩
“After classical music, I got into Motown. It’s a wonderful period of music. even love the Jacksons. And Anita Baker. And even Mica Paris. I love black music and I don’t get to listen to enough of it. it’s terrible how the rock establishment’s xenophobic racist values don’t allow these reference points. You’re not meant to mention black music. It’s disgusting that you never hear anyone praising anyone other than the Stones and Bowie and Ray Davies.” -Damon in 1993
I love How Damon needs to relive experiences at times inorder to sraw insepration to write his lyrics; like he needed to do on The Magic Whip. It's all the more better that most of his lyrics these days feel so...pastoral
Damon is so talented and a musical genius. His music- whether it be Blur, Gorillaz, or His solo stuff- is always so good and full of thought and I love it. I love it so much
I'm glad you do! I think some of his recent stuff with Gorillaz is a bit lackluster. But very few people have created a legacy that can compare to his. And he's still not THAT old. So i think he's still got the potential to pump out more good stuff. Cheers to good music taste!
I'm sad that there's no mention of Damon Albarn's time in Hong Kong and how that influenced blur's 2015 album "the magic whip". a highly underrated album (in my opinion their most underrated) and the story behind it is amazing. the transition from their older albums to the magic whip needed talking about. I would be lying if I didn't say I was waiting for you to mention the magic whip. that album single handedly helped me through my move from Hong Kong to the US. disappointed that it wasn't mentioned at all, but this is an amazing video nonetheless :))
blur didnt make their britpop trilogy (mlir, parklife, & tge) solely because they were angsty young adults; another big reason was that they were sick of the culture that surrounded grunge in america at that time (which was seeping into the uk), so they wanted to make something overtly british in response. felt like that was a big detail missing there & dont quote me on this bc my memory sucks, but i think i read somewhere that damon's interest in african music started when his partner suzi, who had been traveling to many parts of the world before they dated, showed him places like mali. this happened before/around the time 13 & gorillaz self titled was made. i think it was an eye opening experience for him other than that this was a great vid! im a huge fan of damon's work so i was pretty stoked to see this in my feed
What you said in that first paragraph is true. I just didn't know how to implement it into my script and ended up forgetting about it. Thanks for adding it here. And about his girlfriend traveling, that also seems like a well-known fact. Two other guys commented on this video and said the same. I'm glad you liked the video man. Thanks for adding value and being critical :)
The greatest and most important musical collaborator of our time, he's given so many artists a second chance. From Lou Reed to Bobby Wolmack, David Bowie (Bowie obviously needed no 2nd chance), hell he even gave a dying Dennis Hopper a shot at "spoken word"...all the awesome HipHop and Rap artists...this guy is a treasure...mostly because he's humble.
I agree with you there. The unhinged scream/laugh at the end of Swamp Song alone makes it their best album. But every song is great. No filler. I actually live next door to where they recorded the thing, and I remember them going in and out of the studio at all hours of the day. So I suppose the album has extra meaning to me for that reason. It's like a piece of home or something.
Thats amazing, in the blur documentary they say there was alot of tension between band members at that point in time, also i think they recorded it in the same studio as the early Gorillaz albums.
Well, it was recorded in both London and Reykjavík. And I'm in Iceland, so I can't say for certain how much of it was recorded here, or if indeed any Gorillaz material was recorded here. But I can see Studio Sýrland from my window, so that's cool. Although, you'd never guess there was a studio there since the neighbourhood is nothing special. It looks like any residential area, really. But once you go inside, it's a pretty fancy place. I managed to book some sessions there years ago to record some demos. The going rate was 100,000 ISKR/hour, which is roughly 720 pounds, so it hurt my wallet! Thankfully, these days you can do everything from home, and using a studio is only necessary if you need an expert to help you out. As for the band's relation at the time? They didn't smile much, I know that! But have they ever? Alex did, but he was drunk. :)
amazing video and so well made. clint eastwood came out when I was a little kid and I loved the song but was terrified of the band itself, so I would only listen to the CD and never watch their videos. when I got older I discovered blur and was instantly hooked. I kept listening to both bands for years and never knew damon was linked to both until I was like 14 lmao I'm such a flop. now I'm 21 and damon is definitely one of my all time fave musicians and he has been apart of my life for so long I can't imagine never having grown up with his voice
Hahah that's so sweet. I guess they could come off as quite scary. You're not a flop though. There's a lot of things i find obvious in music that i only realized in later years. Music is a continuous learning experience. Thank you for sharing your story and how he has meant to you. Cheers from Norway :)
He is the most underrated artist I have ever heard of. None other I can think of expertly expresses themselves through the amount of different styles and genres as Damon does
No no no. Tom's a pretentious bore no matter what he does. True, he's a much better actor than singer, but even so, he only does parts that allow him to be "special"...
Inspiral Carpets are/were a great band. Its tragic about the drummer. Depression/issues can be hard to get over, i have put together a huge Playlist on here titled 'Understanding Depression' that people may find useful. Hope they are useful to people ? In the 'Playlist' part of my channel
Great video man, I like the consistent uploads and increasing quality of them! Gorillaz was the band that got me so into music so Damon holds a special place in my heart.
For me too. As i already said in the video, my first ever record was a Gorillaz record. So my history of liking his music goes many years back. Thanks for supporting me btw. It means a lot!
For sure! His father had a pretty interesting job. And their house was filled with multicultural music from the very beginning. Seems like a bunch of open-minded people.
Damon's music has been in my life since march 1990... and he is improving musically speaking (apart from the fact that the boy turns into a great man !)...
I didn't like the new Gorillaz album. But to expect only great music from the guy would be wrong. I'm still really excited for what he'll be doing in the future though.
Actually, I don't like the last Gorillaz either. I guess that too many influences are not good. But I am a major Blur fan, because each album is totally different from the former one. Blur are quite underrated sometimes... however meeting their music back in 1990 was the best musical thing which happened to me ! 28 years and couting... This man is just a genius in music....
I just started listening to his whole discography like two days ago lmao I've heard some blur and gorillaz but now I'm actually listening to it all. Next you should do RHCP
I always look at Mike Patton and Damon Albarn as artists that somehow attained a very respectable level of mainstream success while still managing to have insanely proficient, eclectic and creative careers. They are my pillar influences as an artist myself, truly one of a kind individuals.
i really admire and appreciate damon albarn, he's one of my biggest musical inspirations. i hope to one day achieve the level diversity in genre and subject matter as he. so socially and culturally aware.
I don't think he's doing too well with music at the moment though. He was incredibly talented in the past. And he still puts out some great stuff. Everyday Robots was his last great album in my mind. The thinsg he's done with Gorillaz after that is just okay.
I know it’s very taboo and I’m typing this as I’m in intense pain from withdrawal for the nine thousand time, but I have to agree with Damon’s view on drugs *on a personal level*. I started using because I had A LOT of mental health issues and opiates, for a time, broke me free from my sudden psychological collapse and allowed me to experience a wider range of emotions other than “anguish” or “terror”. It was really like seeing the world in color for the first time. Just getting to experience stillness or joy or anything at all that didn’t feel like constant panic. But it should’ve stopped there, obviously getting high to just not feel or to get a fix or to not be sick. Not great. Nothing good comes from that. But in the midst of the opioid crisis when people are suffering because they’re spinning out of control to addiction and dying or losing loved ones and everyone wants to make them harder to prescribe or going so far as to ban certain kinds of poppyseeds from being sold, I just want to say that it’s not *all* bad. I would’ve been dead a long time ago if I didn’t have this crutch. And it’s not from lack of trying to address my mental health, I’ve been on every anti-depressant, anti-psychotic, anti-anxiety, mood stabilizer, maxed out on the doses and every god damn combination of medication, therapy and hospitalization. I know I’m an addict and that dope is a crutch, not a cure and that in the long run it will cause more problems. But for a while, it was a lifeline. It’s just something to consider when making drug policies. You know, abstinence vs harm reduction. And I know I’m not the only one that sees their potential for aid because there have been several clinical trials for opioid based anti-depressants. But anyway.
Loved Damon since I saw him the first time, when I was ten years old and the Parklife vid came on MTV. Feeling blessed growing up watching his talent unfold. He is a clever, thoughtful, restless genius. Even when he started making hip hop ish music, his pure and raw curiosity in sound still inspired me. And the way he saw this whole reality based fame thing years before it happened, and despised it in advance. I dunno, he seems to make a lot of very truthful assessments, evaluating or even just pondering on the world around him. What an absolute legend and true artist. England can surely be proud of him, one of the last sensible superstars.
Growing up during the britpop era of blur versus oasis, I was always more oasis favouring. And gorilliaz kind of past me by at the time. But now I realise, wow, the guy is a real enigmatic genius - such insight, creativity and versitily... Kind of makes all the historical spats with Noah and Liam laughable as both brothers continue to peddle out the same shite, and haven't done anything truly great/good since 'whats the story', whilst Damon has continuously innovated. Kind of makes me appreciate and revisit Blur's back catalogue a little more

Just talking without having a
specific goal or purpose to point towards. I'm so happy to hear that is music has meant that much to
you. And it's awesome how this video alligns with how you view him too. When i think about it, Damon
never really changed that much from when he started out in Blur. His music did.
Lovely video, mate! Very interesting and well represented!
I knew you would be here
HoodoHoodlumsRevenge Who'd've known? :D
Hey man! Thanks for the support. Looks like you've got your own channel too. Sweet!
I'll take a look.
You're the only person here with black eyes
HEY HOODO LOVE YA MAN
I love that despite Damon and Jamie's views on MTV, they still participated in an MTV Cribs episode.
Contrarians!
They see both the good and the bad, and so they use it to their advantage, for the better good. ^_^
yeah, but as trolls, that was the point.
Vegas Martino yes! Grahams would be super interesting
Musicsavedme his noisy distorted guitar from his Blur day is magical and he even getting wilder in the Golden D. sure yeah we need him to get shined and appreciated more not just coz his guitar works but also as a songwriter.
i personaly nicknamed him Sweet Noisy Nerd xD hehe
gua kira gua doang yg dr indo :)))
When I saw a 13 minute video which had Damon Albarn in it in my feed, i knew, that i should drop everything else i was doing and watch it.
Good choice haha 😊 Hope it lived up to the expectations.
Damon is one of my fav musicians, I've known Gorillaz since I was a kid, but I've only recently got into Blur and been obsessed ever since! Great vid!
I want to see Damon and Mac make an album together, that would be a dream come true
That would be fun haha, Imagine their voice being pitted together. Mac demarco with his calming chords choice and Damon with his weird beat sounding
Pulp?
Please let damon and mac make an Album together holy Shit
I don't agree with that comparison. Mac sounds more like Jamie T mate. ;)
Damon Albarn is honestly a musical genius. He is so creative, and his songs often have really good deep meanings. A true artist.
Do thom yorke
dead pie yes pwease
Is a must
Yes!!!!!!!
Do it
You would think it would be the first one they would make.
Oh nice. Both Gorillaz and Mali Music made an impact on me as a musician coming out of the Brit Pop decade. Albarn has a great ear for melody.
Damon is one of those people who've inspired me to make music and all in all become a better person. Was stoked when i saw this in my notifications. Hope to see more quality stuff like this in the future
Spooks21 Same!
Same
“Paparazzi chasing him down the road with his bag of carrots and loaf of bread”
Everyday robots is such an amazing album and it gets me upset that it isn’t appreciated enough
But I had never heard of that band before
I started researching this video. It's not one of his most successful projects then?
But what you're saying about his ability to stay relevant and create good music with such
variation is very true.
It’s disgusting that you never hear anyone praising anyone other than the Stones and Bowie and Ray Davies.” -Damon in 1993
Understanding Bjork!
Impossible
I’m a huge fan, btw
Omg yes yesssss!!!!
But very few people have created
a legacy that can compare to his. And he's still not THAT old. So i think he's still got the potential to pump out
more good stuff. Cheers to good music taste!
I love damon
I understand that I've been in love with this man for over 25 years. Justine Frischmann got him and my other crush, Brett Anderson of Suede.
That's a deep understanding
Imagine somebody writing a song like Tender about you and not wanting to marry them. I can't even.
Great video as always!
Oh Damon is my favorite artist!
Thank you so much I wasn't expecting that 😁
Pink Floyd would be great next
HELL YES!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT HIM! I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS MAN!
Distorted Sounds SAME
I'm sad that there's no mention of Damon Albarn's time in Hong Kong and how that influenced blur's 2015 album "the magic whip". a highly underrated album (in my opinion their most underrated) and the story behind it is amazing. the transition from their older albums to the magic whip needed talking about. I would be lying if I didn't say I was waiting for you to mention the magic whip. that album single handedly helped me through my move from Hong Kong to the US. disappointed that it wasn't mentioned at all, but this is an amazing video nonetheless :))
blur didnt make their britpop trilogy (mlir, parklife, & tge) solely because they were angsty young adults; another big reason was that they were sick of the culture that surrounded grunge in america at that time (which was seeping into the uk), so they wanted to make something overtly british in response. felt like that was a big detail missing there
& dont quote me on this bc my memory sucks, but i think i read somewhere that damon's interest in african music started when his partner suzi, who had been traveling to many parts of the world before they dated, showed him places like mali. this happened before/around the time 13 & gorillaz self titled was made. i think it was an eye opening experience for him
other than that this was a great vid! im a huge fan of damon's work so i was pretty stoked to see this in my feed
What you said in that first paragraph is true. I just didn't know how to implement
it into my script and ended up forgetting about it. Thanks for adding it here. And
about his girlfriend traveling, that also seems like a well-known fact. Two other
guys commented on this video and said the same.
I'm glad you liked the video man. Thanks for adding value and being critical :)
Thom Yorke definitely deserves a video! Such an amazing artist
Great video, though i wish you mentioned the blur album 13, its their underated masterpiece.
Louis me too, 13 is a very important part of Blur (and Damon)
Drika Vasconcelos definitely! its their best work in my opinion.
And I'm in Iceland, so I can't say for certain how
much of it was recorded here, or if indeed any Gorillaz material was recorded here.
But I can see Studio Sýrland from my window, so that's cool. Although, you'd never guess there was
a studio there since the neighbourhood is nothing special. It looks like any residential area, really.
But once you go inside, it's a pretty fancy place.
I managed to book some sessions there years ago to record some demos.
The going rate was 100,000 ISKR/hour, which is roughly 720 pounds, so it hurt my wallet!
Thankfully, these days you can do everything from home, and using a studio is only necessary if
you need an expert to help you out.
As for the band's relation at the time? They didn't smile much, I know that! But have they ever?
Alex did, but he was drunk. :)
i am still so in love with this man
Demon dayz is something else.
amazing video and so well made. clint eastwood came out when I was a little kid and I loved the song but was terrified of the band itself, so I would only listen to the CD and never watch their videos. when I got older I discovered blur and was instantly hooked.
There's a lot of
things i find obvious in music that i only realized in later years. Music is a continuous learning experience.
Thank you for sharing your story and how he has meant to you. Cheers from Norway :)
Damon and Maynard are two modern day geniuses, like Mozart and Beethoven in my opinion.
That's a legit comparison. I'm glad you enjoy them both :)
are you talking about conor maynard
don’t forget his amazing work in his band the good, the bad and the queen!!!
Love gorillaz💖💖 i am also from Pakistan
If I could meet any famous person I think I'd pick Damon Albarn
@Damon Albarn Hater For what?
@Damon Albarn Hater To be clear, you're a troll?
This video actually helped me with writing lyrics.
That's cool. But how?
The way you broke down the themes of their music. I began to start from a theme instead of struggling for a chorus or whatever.
He is the most underrated artist I have ever heard of. None other I can think of expertly expresses themselves through the amount of different styles and genres as Damon does
He's so beautiful.
Hes the 90’s eric clapton. Dude deserves 3 rock n roll hall of fame awards
I think he's got a ton of awards already, right? Especially for Blur and Gorillaz.
Except Clapton is a racist bigot. Damon is not
Great little documentary on a very underrated and unfairly marginalised figure in British music.
So many words to describe this man. He's incredible!
He sure is. Very authentic voice and musical talent
Wonderful, beautiful, magical man 👍
He sure is!
The man who gave us all Blur and Gorrilaz. Damon Albarn is a legend.
Damon Albarn is probably my favorite person to grace any art medium ever. And do you see yourself doing a video on Keichi Okabe?
I can resonate with that. Keichi Okabe? Never heard of him before. I only do rock music though.
Lie Likes Music he's the composer of NieR Automata
You should do Tom Waits... Such a talented and complex character.
George Pap totally agree!
I'd love to know Christian's thoughts on Tom's evolution
No no no. Tom's a pretentious bore no matter what he does. True, he's a much better actor than singer, but even so, he only does parts that allow him to be "special"...
im glad you mentioned inspiral carpets, the drummer took my family on a music tour of manchester. broke my heart when he died
Whaat? That's an interesting story. And yes i would imagine. Sounds like a nice guy.
Inspiral Carpets are/were a great band. Its tragic about the drummer. Depression/issues can be hard to get over, i have put together a huge Playlist on here titled 'Understanding Depression' that people may find useful. Hope they are useful to people ? In the 'Playlist' part of my channel
i will say that all the freaking time. damon is one of the best ppl ever existed. he is such a genius
Do Radiohead :)
Great video man, I like the consistent uploads and increasing quality of them! Gorillaz was the band that got me so into music so Damon holds a special place in my heart.
For me too. As i already said in the video, my first ever record was a Gorillaz record. So my
history of liking his music goes many years back. Thanks for supporting me btw. It means a lot!
I'd say that he's a great one, he has a strange, like different behavior, plus he's a pretty creative person...
Please an Alex Turner video!!
FerMonsa5 Mmmm hes basically the same as Damon
Julian Casablancas
Dodo yay totally Man
yes yes yes
Julian Casablancas got tired of constant hangover
YESS
Damon is like the guy that knows about life, he just know what’s up haha
He is my favourite artist of all times
I love him so much, he’s the most important artist in the world to me
One of my most favourite people on the planet, especially on an intellectual level. I bet his family are well cool to talk to :-)
For sure! His father had a pretty interesting job. And their house was filled with multicultural music
from the very beginning. Seems like a bunch of open-minded people.
A true artist .
You said it
hes such an idol of mine.
Same for me
@@LieLikesMusiclady gaga was better then him 😂😂😂😂🤬🤬🥱
i saw this and i got happy
Cool ;)
Couldn’t have asked for a better vid to pop up over my morning coffee
sam fenwick coffee and tv?
This videos already been out for a while, but i wanna thank you for making it. Damon is suprisingly underrated for his groundbreaking work.
Maybe outside the genres you cover most, but I'd love to see one on James Blake.
FUCKPARKER totally ship this. Genius
read my bloody mind, mate - would love to see one on james blake
Damon is an amazing artist and I honestly don’t know what music would be with it him ❤️
There would probably still be great music. What inspired a lot of these brit-pop bands were
The Smiths. Have you listened to their music before?
Lie Likes Music I’m pretty sure my dad has
I started crying at the end god I love this man
I just started listening to his whole discography like two days ago lmao I've heard some blur and gorillaz but now I'm actually listening to it all. Next you should do RHCP
Glad this was recommended. Very subscribe worthy.
The song Far Out is by the bassiest Alex James and sung by him as well
I always look at Mike Patton and Damon Albarn as artists that somehow attained a very respectable level of mainstream success while still managing to have insanely proficient, eclectic and creative careers. They are my pillar influences as an artist myself, truly one of a kind individuals.
surprised you didn't mention his collaboration on RAVENOUS! such a brilliant soundtrack, and so outta left field.
Yes I freakin love that one. So unsettling
i really admire and appreciate damon albarn, he's one of my biggest musical inspirations. i hope to one day achieve the level diversity in genre and subject matter as he. so socially and culturally aware.
I don't think he's doing too well with music at the moment though. He was incredibly talented in the past.
And he still puts out some great stuff. Everyday Robots was his last great album in my mind. The thinsg he's
done with Gorillaz after that is just okay.
Lie Likes Music of course you won’t like every single thing an artist puts out. everyone has their own tastes. i thought the now now was a good album.
I might love him.
But anyway.
Great video, I would’ve like to see something about The Good, the Bad and the Queen in there. Anyways great job !
Yes i kind of left that out because it's his least famous project. But thanks for mentioning it here. Cheers from Norway.
