    Fab video. I went to House of Quinn quilting retreat there for 1 week in May staying in their town house too - a truly 11/10 experience. I did NOT stay on budget !!Just finishing their Hattie dress - I’m a total dressmaking beginner and this is an intermediate pattern but because their instructions are so clear it has been very straight forward. X

      Oh my goodness, the retreat seems amazing. So jealous! I love when pattern companies make instructions that cater to all makers. With good instructions and enthusiasm, you can really do so much!

      So glad that I could take you all along with me! I kept doing calculations when I was considering my purchases. I was actually going to give myself the okay to go slightly over budget (not having to pay shipping, stocking up on things like buttons, etc.). It just worked out with the lengths of fabrics that I wanted, though. It was a good feeling!

    Rye is a wonderful place to visit, whether or not you're there for Merchant and Mills 😊 The last time we were there, I came across the store by chance, but it was closed 😢 Good news for my wallet, I guess. But I know where it is now... 😂

      Their opening hours really are strange. It's one to plan ahead for. But how sad that you couldn't stop in when you found it! Oh well, not bad to have another reason to go back to Rye. 😉

    I love Rye and the Merchant & Mills shop. There is just so much beautiful fabric it can be a bit overwhelming so it’s a good idea to look at the website before you go. I personally love their patterns too and there are samples in the shop made up which I found really helpful.

    • @LostMyThread
      @LostMyThread  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I definitely did not plan ahead. Haha! There were some fabrics that I'd liked on their Instagram which were fun to see in person. I feel like even being able to see a lot of the fabrics in real life will be really helpful for the future. The samples were so beautiful, and gave you such a good idea of how to use the fabric. Great shop!

    Oh, that Festival check has been on my radar for ages, too. It's so beautiful. I haven't splurged on any Merchant and Mills fabric yet, but I did treat myself to a pair of their black Xylan shears for Christmas a couple of years ago. They're one of my most prized possessions. Beautiful place. Beautiful shops and beautiful fabrics. I live a long way from Rye and made a bee line for the shop when I was on hols nearby. Sadly it was after Covid and they were not admitting customers because they had too many online orders to deal with. The doors were open but barred. I was gutted as it was a prime reason for staying nearby. I was also gutted because the lady working inside was quite rude to me. I have never bought anything M&M since( except for one pattern in a small local shop). I think I need to “get over myself” and re visit. So pleased you loved your trip and experience. 😊. Happy Sewing. Lynne

    Great video. I just bought plain green linen from Merchant & Mills and made the StyleArc Palmer shirt dress. I’m hoping the colour stays through many washes. It was my first purchase from Merchant & Mills. I did enquire on FB, on the Foldline group, I think, why their linen was £22 per metre when others sell 100% linen for about £10 or £12 per metre. Most people with experience of Merchant & Mills cited good quality so I gave it a try. I’m unlikely ever to be in Rye so it was lovely to see your tour of the shop.

    • @LostMyThread
      @LostMyThread  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't think you'll be disappointed with the color of their linen. I've bought a lot of varied linen over the years, and the weight, movement, and body of their linen is perfect for dressmaking. I recently used fabric scraps of their linen on a wall hanging, and comparing the scrap to the jumpsuit that I've made and washed probably a hundred times, there was no discernible difference from the color of the original. The only difference was that the jumpsuit fabric was softer. See how you find your dress over time, but I was in the same boat until I had made that jumpsuit and was so satisfied with the finished result.

    Beautiful fabrics and town! What a nice mini-vacation. This video reminded me a bit of my trip to Discovery Fabrics in Cambell River British Columbia. Another beautiful place in a completely different way, with one of a kind, hard to find and pricier fabric selection. I did not set a budget but I had limited room in my suitcase thankfully 😅. Nice to be able to feel the fabrics and tour the store in person. Bet you got lots of inspiration and will feel confident making future purchases for special makes in the future.

Suitcase space is usually what keeps me in check when I travel to the US. 😆 It's so true that being able to see the fabrics will also be useful for future purchases. So many of the fabrics had a very different drape and handle than I expected- all in a positive way! Wishing us both more mini breaks and successful fabric shopping trips!

    • @LostMyThread
      @LostMyThread  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Japanese cottons were such a pleasant surprise for me. The quality and handle are fantastic. I agree that the block prints are really reasonably priced. I honestly think all of their fabric is fairly priced, for what it is. Having purchased some of their pricier linen and seeing how it holds up, I get it. I've bought less expensive linen from other places that has not looked as nice over many washes and wears. Maybe one day if you take a trip down south, you can swing by!

    • @ashersorfleet4004
      @ashersorfleet4004 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @LostMyThread A few months ago, I started to look at what styles suit me and plan a summer collection. I plan to make quite a few linen items in earthy colours and ordered a few bits from Merchant and Mills. I agree that the quality is amazing, and I will be ordering more. I have ordered the block prints from Etsy, and sadly, one of the prints was poor quality. With shipping from India, it worked out about the same price as M&M. I have made some beautiful blue and white culottes from Indian cotton Ikat. That is definitely worth a look.

      I am impressed with your restraint! Even without buying anything, it's nice to go and have a look around. It's laid out so beautifully, and everything has such a cool, cohesive style. Really great shop!

    How did the prices in the UK compare to the US?

      I've never tried to buy Merchant in Mills Fabrics in the US, but looking at websites in the currency conversion rate, it definitely is a higher price in the US. You'd be paying $28 a yard for the same fabric that would cost $25 per meter in the UK (meters being slightly longer than a yard). I've only looked at one website and one of the fabrics, but I think it gives you some idea.
