  • There are a few signs to look out for to know how to pick a persimmon. In this video, I'll guide you through the simple steps to make sure you know how to pick a ripe persimmon and don't end up biting into an unripe one and getting a horrible astringent experience eating one.

    There’s astringent persimmons and non astringent persimmons. Fuyus can be eaten at any stage cause they’re non astringent. Hachiyas are astringent so they have to be very ripe before being eaten

    I had one long ago, I can't wait to have it again. I think sweet and pungy describes it's taste well.

    I bought some. They were rock hard. I cut it up and ate it. Still very sweet. Not juicy. Tastes like fall. Cinnamon pumpkin flavors.
    Since that first one, i eat the red and yellow ones the same. I've NEVER had a fully ripe persimmon because i can't wait enough. My favorite fruit for the fall.

    To me to flavor is like a mix of all types of fruit, mixed with sugar, and then putrified in a bucket for five days. Fifteen days if the weather is cool.

    what if the persimmon that is soft and ripe on the outside but semi transparent on the inside? is this edible? 🤔 am afraid the appearance cd be cause of chemicals or fertilizers used...

    • @yyvette
      @yyvette 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the way they are when ripe. Translucent and jelly like parts on the inside

    Thank you! I thought I had read that the Fuyu's were better, but you are saying the larger ones are sweeter, but more expensive, correct? If that's true I may want to try a larger one.

      Try both and see what you like. Taste can be quite subjective.

    Totally disgusting astringent flavor, I felt like eating sand paper. Then I waited more for a super ripe one and the flavor is just fine. It is something that I will not recommend considering that this fruit is not edible most of the time.

    • @EarthMonkey
      @EarthMonkey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They ripen very quickly then need to be consumed ASAP

    What is with the hair? Also if you freeze the astringent persimmons for a couple months, the tannin levels will drop off. Persimmons are great to add to a fermentation or pickle because of their high tannin content. It's like grape leaves. They help keep other produce crisp.
