    Anytime you got a load of Steel on your flatbed that's okay if you use your straps but use Edge protectors on there cuz that steel will cut your straps right in two I drove for 31 years if you're not using the nylon straps you can use a change with Edge protectors also that way you don't tear anything up either way just be safe out there

Trailer weight maybe 6000 lbs total equals 30000 plus??? Are you not way over your GCVWR??? I think everybody that is hot shot trucking is forgetting about this rule?? Just wondering??

  • @mrcowboypimp

    Hi Paul. Since you mentioned tires and roughly mileage that you get out of them... I just wanted to ask, have you tried running 225/70R19.5 or 245/70R19.5? Yes they are commercial tires and they may be rough not to mention they can get pricey... but you can always buy new to put on your steers, run them about half to 3/4 thread life then regroove them (if they're regrooveable) rotate them to the rear to continue getting more life out of your tires. So in the long run the idea is that you would not only be compliant with DOT but you would also save money on tires...so just a thought and was wondering if you have done it.

    PD, question for you. So i have a 2006 2500 Cummins, only the 5.9, and i have a 36' PJ flatbed gooseneck trailer. I'll be towing double derby cars on it; one full size (about 8,000-10,000 pounds) and a mini ( 4,000 to 6,000), so safe to say i'll have around 16,000 Pounds on the trailer (trailer itself weights 7,500 Ibs, but 2,000 on the bed weight).
    I want to Install airbags (Load lifter 5,000 ultimate) but my cousin said that it should be fine. Is he correct, or should i install them? Thanks in advance PD!

      rascle29 so 16k + 7,500=23,500 take 20 percent of that, gives you 4,700 on your truck. Your truck will hate you if you have stock 2500 leaf springs with no helper springs. So the air bags are a must.

    If you tow more than 10,000 lbs. you need what's called a restricted A license its meant for people towing large horse trailers or large RV's. If you are towing commercially you need a cdl with air endorsement if you have air brakes. The restricted A requires a medical and a road test with you rig. For G license you can not tow over 10,000lbs.

      PD Diesel Power I used to run the Geolandar AT/S on my truck and always had better results than any other tires I put on, and I needed the more agressive tread pattern due to the poor conditions on most of my jobsites. I had the HT/S tires on my Expedition and they are awesome in the rain and snow as well. Then the Geo15 compound came out last year and the tires are absolutely second to none. I am still at 1/2 tread wear with 35k on the tires and two rotations (front brakes got changed separately from rears so I rotated when I changed the brakes). I strongly recommend them for any truck that actually gets used. I tow through the Appalacian Mountains frequently as well so a good tire is a must when winter comes around.

    Hello there! That’s a beautiful Ram you have there! Do you get much grief with using a single rear wheel? I see the diff cover tells us your running an Aisin transmission. Also I’m not sure where your are running? But where I am in the N. E. Area, when hauling steel, you may use straps, but better have at least one HD chain for every 10’ with a load of steel! It’s ok to load and secure first with straps. But you must add a chain for every 10’ of length on each piece of metal! Afterwards. I’ve always dreamed of going Hot Shot af driving big truck for 35 good years. But it would be great to have a rig to make money and tow a nice travel trailer! So be careful out there but still have fun!

    You should weight your truck with that trailer connected. Your be over weight faster than you think with a single wheel like that. Been there done that. Be careful out there. Not let DOT catch you. Texas and California are the worst for DOT Officers. They'll pull you over in a heartbeat without DOT numbers.

    Running 3/4 ton with singles on trailer and no protectors on straps? I don't know about all that. Been running oilfield hotshot many years. You could get away with singles but no protectors on straps is a pretty rookie thing to do.
    Hot tip. Go get you some 3/4" plywood and screw it down on the deck. Wont have to replace deck boards and you don't have to try to line up cross members. Makes life a lot easier.

    Sounds like David has some input on how to run the biz. Paul, the other trucks you have for over 26k, what are their trailer lengths? I'm still a year away from making a wise decision and trailer length is currently being reviewed.
    Does the "market" where you reside determine length? I'm thinking anywhere from 32' - 38' should cover most. What would you recommend as a starter?
    Some people swear by 40'....

    • @geraldthomas218
      @geraldthomas218 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ...550 mile radius is the uppermost range with a long bed 3500.

    • @pddieselpower
      @pddieselpower  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Garfield Thomas if your talking about being tagged at 26k+ which sounds like it. I would say 36-38 foot Trailer. If you were to do more of a long haul I would say 40+. sounds like you want to do 550 mile range

    • @pddieselpower
      @pddieselpower  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Garfield Thomas o ya. you can't do 26k+ properly with a srw. must be a dually

    • @geraldthomas218
      @geraldthomas218 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, I'm gonna aim for 36'-38'. I'm weight conscious and from what I calculated from BigTex online and their dealers, I'll save 300# if I go from a 40' to a 38'.

    • @pddieselpower
      @pddieselpower  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Garfield Thomas sounds about right on the weight. as far as length. it's a convince factor

    Thanks for your informative videos. Would a 2500 short bed handle goose neck towing as well as a long bed?

    • @seamuswalsh37
      @seamuswalsh37 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lokyr00 most cases the tow capacity is higher the smaller the chassis length, meaning a 3500 long bed crew cab capacity is less than single cab short bed. with the exception of a few years and models. like new 2017 f350 the crew cab long bed 4x4 is same capacity as the short wheel base 2wd. also most 4500 chassis are rated to tow less than the 3500, but more payload can be handled, meaning they're built for the payload not tow capacity. but yo can change a couple things to counter act that, like gears or suspension or brakes.

    • @GrandPrix46
      @GrandPrix46 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tow capacity is higher because the shorter truck is lighter, in real world application the longer wheelbase truck will tow better because its heavier and the front end will be more planted.
