Have your heard "Carnival of Sound" by Jan & Dean? Another great album! It was supposed to be Jan & Dean's answer to "Pet Sounds" but never got released until the late 90's.
Many of the same studio musicians that played on Good Vibrations also played on the recordings of the Mama’s & Papas. The Wrecking Crew studio musicians. Hal Blaine was the recording drummer on both.
As a British blues guy have I to say the more I listen to them the more I appreciate them. Brian really grew and despite things relly rose above it all thanks Beach Boys

Grew up listening to my pops records (1st), of them and was lucky to see them on their 50th anniversary in LA. I'm very lucky, never thought I'd see half of the musical influences I listened thanks to my parents records. And I used to live the next town over to the BBs kiddy home. Now I've lived for over 10 years in the town Murray Wilson end up passing in '73
My older Sister had "Pet Sounds" (the LP) around 1966. Sorry that drugs messed up the Wison guys. They still performed & made us Americans (& native Californians) proud. Mike Love at 10:10 - " you can let the past screw with your head for a lifetime or you can say all we have is right now ".Sums up Mike Love's life view . Once he made big money with the surfing/hot rod songs it was then all about not letting go of the formula. He fought against Pet Sounds and Smile because he was afraid the Beach Boys would lose what they had. Mike Love was always a right now kind of guy... and not too many years from right now he will be forgotten. Brian Wilson who had the past screw with his head for a lifetime will leave a body of work that will live forever.
The entire band, except for Bruce, was against the idea of Pet Sounds and SMiLE. It wasn't until they were given critical praise that they saw that it was the way to go, which is why they left behind the surf stuff until the mid-'70s.
And, ironically, Mike's been trying to save face ever since by saying he wasn't as against those albums as has been claimed in the past. _Smile_ having been abandoned was one of the maddening things to have happened in rock history. Had he actually been able to finish it and release it back in the day - if you've heard the belatedly finished 2004 version - it would've blown _Sgt. Pepper_ out of the water (an album which I've never considered that brilliant in the first place). You can't put a price on artistry... and that's something money-obsessed hacks like Mike will never understand. : P

The record label in the US failed to promote it and undercut it's sales by releasing a "best of" Beach Boys album 2 months after Pet Sounds was released. Back then there was no social media to self promote, the company could make or break it, and they short sightedly chose to break it.

BUT, here the greatest band aside from the Beatles of course are all back ( aside form Carl-the heart, Dennis- the soul and rebel) , and it doesnt get any better than this. Always loved these guys growing up 2nd generation in the 70's and loving the 60's BB right through today 2019.... Would love to hear Mccartney and Wilson do an entire album together in 2020 or so . Next to a lennon/mccartney reunion, this would be the greatest scene to ever happen in popular music and musical culture hands down. Thank you guys for getting it all back to basics.... Do one last HUGE tour around the world please and then do one last PET Sounds/Smile type project to leave the critics in the future realing......
I do love the old harmonies and the Beach Boys are the best at them but there is some very excellent young musical talent out there today. I have reason to be optimistic!!

Only problem in the historical look back section here is that Brian was onto SMiLE well before the Beatles even conceived of Sgt. Pepper's. He already had the bulk of the songs written and had begun sessions with the wrecking crew by August '66. Sgt. Pepper's didn't start recording until November and the "concept" behind it wasn't developed until February '67. Not only that, but compared to the concept(s) governing SMiLE, Pepper's is kinda weak, honestly. And that's not to denigrate Sgt. Pepper's in the slightest. It's an absolutely brilliant work of art. I'm just saying if you're going to compare the two...
Yeah, I've never understood the obsession with _Sgt. Pepper_ . It's not even the best Beatles album, as far as I'm concerned ( _Rubber Soul_ , _Revolver_ , the White Album, and _Abbey Road_ all being superior, IMO). It's mostly let down by Paul's rather unremarkable tunes, like "With a Little Help from My Friends," "Getting Better," "Fixing a Hole," "She's Leaving Home," and "Lovely Rita." The best song he wrote for the album didn't even end up on the album ("Penny Lane"). _Smile_ would've blown that album out of the water, had Brian been given the support needed to see it through to its completion back in the day, rather than belatedly doing so 37 years later. : /

Actually he had the worst voice of the entire group. The reason Mike sang lead on many of the early hits was in part because he couldn’t play an instrument. Brian being the nicest and most sincere guy in the room, gave him lead vocal responsibilities. He was after all the Wilsons’ cousin. No one knew at that time that money and profit would become the driving forces behind the decisions Mike would make later. Decisions that would help send Brian’s fragile psyche damaged by mental illness into the abyss.
Gimme a break. Mike's nasally voice was hardly a driving force. Plus, he only ever wrote one great song for the group completely on his own ("Big Sur"). His obsession with commercial success would eventually lead them to become a parody of themselves, which is basically what they've been since the late '70s (barring this 50th anniversary gig). : P

They were the premier American rock band. I GET AROUND was an anthem for youth all across the country. By the mid sixties, they were the superstars who set the standard for the Beatles and even ABBA.

I'd LOVE to see you sing with Mike's talent, AND also at the same time deal with working side by side with Brian's mental illness for more than a few months at a time (nothing against Brian, he can't control his illness). Just because you don't happen to like Mike, doesn't mean he has "minimal talent". I'd argue that it's most likely you who has "minimal talent".
Anybody can see that although Mike is a good singer, he's not much more than that. Brian only caved in and gave Mike cowriting credits because he was unable to handle the pressure of dragging it out in court for months or years at a time. Listen to some of Mike's lyrics that he wrote without any involvement from Brian, that will tell you all you need to know about his songwriting abilities

They were the premier American rock band. I GET AROUND was an anthem for youth all across the country. By the mid sixties, they were the superstars who set the standard for the Beatles and even ABBA.

@@dazzaMusic Mike Love would add lyrics but as soon as Brian wanted to do anything other than surf music or the other things that made them famous initially he did all he could to derail it. This is well documented ad I'm surprised anyone debates this anymore.
I'd LOVE to see you sing with Mike's talent, AND also at the same time deal with working side by side with Brian's mental illness for more than a few months at a time (nothing against Brian, he can't control his illness). Just because you don't happen to like Mike, doesn't mean he has "minimal talent". I'd argue that it's most likely you who has "minimal talent".
Anybody can see that although Mike is a good singer, he's not much more than that.
Brian only caved in and gave Mike cowriting credits because he was unable to handle the pressure of dragging it out in court for months or years at a time.
Listen to some of Mike's lyrics that he wrote without any involvement from Brian, that will tell you all you need to know about his songwriting abilities
