Another reason face lathering is better than bowl lathering . Straight from a professional barber Sebaceous glands are microscopic glands found in your hair follicles that secrete sebum. Sebum is an oily substance that protects your skin from drying out. Face lathering lifts the hairs of your beard but also if done long enough helps the Saebaceuos glands to activate producing the Sebum oil that helps your shave soap to work better.
Thanks for sharing Daniel. Very informative. I think this is why my face has cleared up over the past three years. I generally will wash my face with a brush and some of my premier shaving soaps at night before I go to bed. Thanks for your insight.
@SultanKhan66 I have seen bowl lathering where they just lsther in bowl then paint brush it on. And have seen others bowl lathering and break the backbone of there brush and scrub like a face lathering person. So I would either just face lather or do the latter to benefit from what the barber taught me.
I used to mainly use bowls to build lather up until I bought a jar of Executive Man from Stirling, now it's not only easier to face lather but it guarantees that I'll get the right consistency every single time.
Can I add that while the various shaving creams I have tried are great, I get a comparable lather from the equivalent soap with a little more work. For eg., TOBS Sandalwood soap gives, with a bit more work on the brush, equivalent lather on my face as the cream.
Been using the manscaped razor for years with whatever razor at Walmart and a normal shave cream. Shaves were always dry and the blades snagged my hairs so bad. Don’t even start with the aftershave I would do. I watched this guy for like 10 minutes before buying a Rockwell razor, 20+ variety of blades, a brush, A&E soaps, the alum block, pre and post shave oils and of course that Thayers! I lather my whole face with that soap in the shower at night before bed. one week in My complexion and skin feel phenomenal. One shave in so far, My face feels smoother than baby ass!! Thank you Ohio
David has the best shaving videos on TH-cam. For me, I agree that face lathering is the best way to go. It's easier, less messy, builds up a great lather, and prepares your beard for the razor.
Not if you shave daily. The degree of exfoliation can be aggressive when doing a daily face lather. Up until you build a decent lather on your face, you are literally scratching it almost dry. That's why as a daily shaver I use a bowl.
I think it basically depends on the type of skin you have. I am a face lathering daily shaver and I haven’t encountered any problems. Maybe it helps that I follow up the shave with the alum bar, Thayers, and a moisturizing balm. Learned that watching Ohio Shaves.
Another great video. With an overabundance of soaps and creams I took your advice and face lather with them everyday, even when not shaving, for cleaning my face twice a day. I switched from the T3 brush to a Yaqi adjustable badger brush and can make the bristles very stiff. I work the soap in and you can feel the brush exfoliating. And I am taking about the whole face including my nose, forehead, temples etc. as you suggested in an earlier video. Thayer's and Nivea after. What a difference it has made in my skin and has greatly reduced acne.
Great vid David but I didn't realize it was only a short video, I got all excited waiting for the razor to slice through that growth then the video stopped. Either way is was a great short video with lots of lather. 👍
@OhioShaves i don't see why you should give up eather one. The teaser is great but I enjoy the shorts also. Teaser for the weekend and maybe a short or two during the week 😁
I agree the couple of shorts during the week pretty much set up Sunday’s video. I kind of felt like I cheated the subscribers last week by not having a full length video and just doing our podcast that I only let the member see.
@OhioShaves yeah I would be disappointed because i look forward to your videos but you rarely do a members chat so if people want the full experience it's only a couple dollars...js
Face lathering is the way to go. Once I began doing that, I never looked back. It's especially great as a shower shaver. Then I can really sling the yogurt-like lather all over my face, neck and dome. Cheers and good shaves to you!
I face lather almost all the time. The only difference is I scoop some out into a bowl and load the brush from there instead of loading from the soap container. That way I don't keep rewetting the soap. Easy to do just make sure there is no excess water in your brush. BTW, that Woods and Spice makes the most impressive lather of all of my soaps. A little bit pops into a lather in seconds and then the follow up lathers all pop in seconds as well. Makes me feel a little bad cleaning the brush off. LOL now you have me wanting to use that for tomorrow's shave.
I find the longer time you spend lathering on your actual face the softer your bristles are when it comes to the shave. I've stopped bowl lathering after watching your tips 👍🏻😁
Hey there! Absolute newbie to DE shaving and came across your channel. Several questions. 1) Cream or soap? 2) Gillette and Feather blades are more than three times the price of Astra blades. Do they last three times longer? Why would one consider getting them over Astra? 3) Do you prefer the Rockwell 6s or the 6C? 4) What are some of your favorite aftershaves, soaps, and creams? Thank you for your time. Your channel has already been a great help. I got a Rockwell 6s for me and a 6c for my brother. (Thanks for the extra 10% off with Ohio_Shaves!)
@ Legendary video. Can’t wait to get my hands on my new razor! Also put an alum block and some of that Thayers stuff in my Amazon cart. Thanks for the help!
I know most on TH-cam I watch only psint lathrr onto face. Seen a video that said not to break backbone of brush because it will damage brush, that is hogwash. Have a antique Everyready boar with original knot probably 40 years older or more that's in excellent condition. Breaking backbone hasn't hurt it. Was my dad's brush now I use it.
Yeah I totally agree with you Danielle. It's total horseshit. You can't believe everything you see here on TH-cam. I try to keep it real and just give the advice that I've learned over the past three years from subscribers and people like yourself. Thanks, my friend. Greatly appreciated.
It's just idiots who paid $200 for a badger brush being afraid to ruin it. I paid less than 10 EUR for my omega boar brush and I abuse it as much as I can and it isn't affected at all. It's not even fully broken in yet.
I’m starting to face-lather more and more. It feels good when the bristles massage and exfoliate the skin and lift the hairs of my beard. Another great video and excellent advice! GO BLUE!!! 🔵🟡〽️

So you're saying that people that bowl lather don't work the shave soap into their face like a face latherer. Gotcha
@SultanKhan66 I have seen bowl lathering where they just lsther in bowl then paint brush it on. And have seen others bowl lathering and break the backbone of there brush and scrub like a face lathering person. So I would either just face lather or do the latter to benefit from what the barber taught me.
After months of trying and getting better bowl lathers, I tried face lathering. It’s all I do now. Huge difference.
Me too
I’ve done face lathering, bowl lathering, painting with the brush and face scrub.
All the same, all works.
Which one do you have more success with?
@ I would say bowl lathering and painting with the brush but only slightly.
Thanks for sharing
I used to mainly use bowls to build lather up until I bought a jar of Executive Man from Stirling, now it's not only easier to face lather but it guarantees that I'll get the right consistency every single time.
Right
I started bowl lathering, but over time have found face lathering easier and more effective. One less thing to clean too.
Me too

I use my chin to break the backbone on the brush. I find it to be easier than using a cheek.
Whatever works for you, brother. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I always get better quality lather and overall shave with face lathering. The exfoliation leaves my face so smooth and it feels so good.
Glad to hear it’s working for you.

Great tutorial David!!! Thanks for using our soap

One concern is, won't this create brush burn, given you may have less stubble due to daily shaving ?
You're still exfoliating your skin
I get brush burn when I scrub like that. Painting works better for me.
I used to as well until I switched to a synthetic brush from a badger. Are you sure it's not the brush bristles itself?
How often do you usually shave?
Every couple of days
There isn't a right or wrong way to shave, you use and do whatever works for you, not all beard and skin are the same
Well. I agree, but let’s take it to another level
