    Why the hell are people in the comments criticizing this?? I don't see them doing this kind of thing, no, they're just sitting on their asses indoors behind a computer screen complaining about a lady who could out survive them if they found themselves in a survival situation. Most people die from exposure, she made an awesome shelter. Give her some props.

    I'm re-watching this during COVID 19 and realizing just how useful it could be to have a shelter like this allowing one to maintain complete isolation during a pandemic. If you worked out a system for supplies, this could be just the thing.

    Hi Lilly!
    I liked your show! I’m stunned that I’m so intrigued by watching the shows of surviving alone in the snow with fire and tent - or as in your case a homemade shelter. I live in NYC, USA, but I own a cabin 4 hours away on a lake. I spend hours in the woods chopping up fallen trees - and spend the night burning the wood in my giant fires pit. I love dogs - and I’m happy you have one - but I lose interest in other shows when the guy refers to his dog all the time. Your dog was part of this episode but you weren’t silly about him. Perfect! He needed water, though. I really look forward to watching you some more! God Bless you & Stay warm, Lilly!

      I think it's more so to hide the bright color(s) of the tarp and prevent it from reflecting any light. That would make the shelter extremely easy to see from far away, where now they would have to be a bit closer. It doesn't hide her shelter, but it does make it harder for people to spot.

    My first question was why you placed the lean two facing the prevailing wind. Yes the wood wall will break much of the wind but would not it have been better to place the slope of the lean two towards the wind? If we left food about in my neck of the woods like you had those cans on the shelf the bears would have made a mess of things.

      I don't think it is so much the smell. Here in north west Wyoming, when a bear raids a camp they bite everything just to see what it is. Sleeping bags, tents, boots, everything. And they do bite through tin cans and lick whatever leaks out, might be a learned habit. We have plenty of tourist in the summer going to Yellowstone for them to practice raiding on.

      As re-engineering to open outwards poses construction problems, a swivel peg-latch on inside near top would help and should be easy to implement. Even as is, the door might keep out a small deer, but certainly not a bear and probably not a pig.

    It must have been so much fun to build. And satisfying, knowing you did it yourself. :)
    I like to think of building bush camps as cubby houses for grown ups. :) ( I don't mean that in an insulting way) You can build them as basic or as elaborate as you want. They're always a work in progress as you continue refining and improving them.
    I love that you can contain your dog within the structure and not have the worry about where he is all the time.

      If you have a dog, it should be one capable of catching its own food. Survival is hard enough just feeding yourself. Terriers are good at catching mice and other small rodents and often kill more than they need, leaving something for you. Hounds are hunters but will often chase off more food than they will kill. Setters, pointers and spaniels are mostly game indicators, needing humans to actually kill the game.

    Funny girl. You should come join me at my camp near Lake Fehr, Utah, Lilly - you do the hunting and I'll do the fishing, we'll eat like royalty. I'll let you handle the bears.

    • @SurvivalLilly
      @SurvivalLilly  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Nick Danger can you tell me more about this national forest? what are the regulations for hunting and camping?

    • @MultiNickDanger
      @MultiNickDanger 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Survival Lilly
      Uinta National Forest - it's beautiful, high-elevation country (my camp is at 10,000 feet). Pristine coniferous forest with clean, clear lakes, tons of wildlife, wildflowers everywhere in the Spring and early Summer.
      The hunting is top-notch. I don't hunt personally, I'm a fisherman. But what people hunt for around here are mule deer, elk, cougar, bobcat, black bear, geese, beaver, turkey, scaup (that's a type of duck), and I'm sure I'm forgetting several things.
      They're very strict about the seasons, but the wildlife is abundant to say the least, and I guess that's how they keep it that way.
      The fishing is fantastic. What a lot of people don't know is that the state of Utah stocks the lakes and rivers of their national forest land (4.5 million acres), with trout, tigerfish, largemouth bass, and walleye. The Mormons are very proud of their state, they want abundance everywhere. The 7-mile northern stretch of the Green River on the eastern end of the state holds more trout per river-mile than any other place on Earth.
      The only problem with Uinta, as opposed to the other Utah national forests (Dixie and Fishlake) is the camping limitation - 14 days per month, then you have to leave forest land with all your gear. In Dixie & Fishlake you get 16 days, and you don't have to leave the forest at all, you just have to move your camp - 5 miles in Fishlake, 10 miles in Dixie.
      Uinta is no place I'd want to be in the winter - even now it gets down well below freezing at night and a long cold snap with heavy snow is definitely still possible. In the winter, it would be full Everest mode around here.
      Not much internet access around - you have to go to a ranger station to get a wifi signal. They don't mind, but I don't do it very often. You just happened to catch me while I've got a small injury (sliced my hand open pretty badly cleaning a walleye) which is keeping me close to civilization for a few days while it heals.
      Love your videos, BTW. I was showing a couple of the rangers your shelter video and they all got a nice laugh from your Supergirl routine. "Our kind of woman" is the consensus. You have a lovely sense of humor.
      Thanks for the reply, Lilly.

      @SurvivalLilly  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      very interesting. thank you :) what do you mean you have a camp there? is it a permanent camp?

    • @MultiNickDanger
      @MultiNickDanger 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Survival Lilly
      I live out here most of the year. I have a house in Tennessee but I'm rarely in it.
      Usually I come out here planning to spend a month then end up staying for at least 3. I can feed myself out here quite easily, I end up giving a lot of fish away to day-hikers and other short-term visitors.
      I do have a permanent shelter in Dixie National Forest that no one knows about, built a small cabin out of reclaimed wood in the deep, deep, deep forest. Here in Uinta I just set up a tent, this is not a place I could get away with building a permanent shelter, the rangers do make their rounds, and it's not as big or as wooded as Dixie.
      This year I am seriously considering staying out for a year. I just got here about 10 days ago. I'm thinking about Uinta for the summer, Fishlake for the early fall, Dixie for the late fall/early winter, then possibly the canyonlands of southeast Utah for the deep winter.. But those are national parks, not national forests, so there are more restrictions, and I hate restrictions. Then, of course, back up here to Uinta in the spring-time before heading home. I haven't decided for certain, I'll see how it goes.
      Friends of mine keep asking me to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail with them, but that takes 6 months. I haven't been away from this wilderness for that long in several years. I just love it too much.

      Mark Bergman - good point, should someone be there long enough stretches to need that (apparently she's not). Thanks for sharing...

      I wouldn't expect monsoon-like rain in Europe and even in such,the fire wouldn't go out.
      Thanks anyway but no thanks

    The number one rule for shelter construction is 1. Always face the opening of your shelter 90 degrees to the prevailing wind. That is for any kind of shelter in any part of the world. Faced into the wind puts the smoke into your living area. Facing away from the wind creates a turbulence that sucks the smoke into your shelter. If you face 90 degrees to the wind it blows the smoke across the the front and away from you. If you are along any kind of waterway the wind usually blows up or down it. The wind usually blows one way during the day and reverses at night. So you will be okay when it switches directions.
    For you Lilly, smoke always follows beauty so you will always be plagued by it.

      My guess would be there's lots of permavirgins out there who get triggered and angry at the idea of a woman doing anything.

    Seriously though... Who disliked this video? Like, who thought to themselves "Nope. Nope. This is all wrong... Who the hell does she think she is, being all competent and knowledgable and shit? I have to devalue this thing she posted somehow -- you know, exercise all this authority the thumbs down feature imbues me with, so that I can put her and people like her in their proper place."

      +Survival Lilly you rock ma'am. Happened across a video, and been tuned in ever since. In my opinion, one of the best channels on youtube by a mile (1.60934 kilometers) and then some. Thanks for sharing.
