This is absolute perfection both technically and artistically. Morissette is pure vocal emotion!I LOVE the R&B twist here. Kept the base elements of the original but gave it a new flavor! This was a signiture cover for her that went viral on Wish in 2017 and due to some copyright issues with Wish it was removed. It has been reuploaded and shared across social media over and over to high acclaim, even catching the eye and praise of the original artist Andra Day. Morissette chose to revive it for her Birthday and encourage all who hear it to stay the course during these unparalleled times with covid. Many have felt it's also spirit lifting to the current Us social unrest heard around the world.
The arrangement is the brain child of 3rd Avenue member Adonis Tabanda (bassist and such a gifted musician) he along with all these talented musicians have worked with Morissette for years, many times backing her at her concerts! They're also an independent band from the Philippines, doing premiere Wedding gigs as well as their own music and covers. They have said that Morissette laid down the solo track first, and they used that to build their vocals around.
Your point about her range of vocal abilities allowing her to do as she wills is so true. As another musician put it, she is one of the few vocalists who can turn the rasp on and off. I personally love it because besides tone, texture is everything! She really used her Quarentine time to put out some quality content. Bravo to her also biiiiigg ups to her Boyfriend Dave Lamar who is the genius behind the editing on all her what I call "The Quarentine Covers". Thank you for having her on your channel again and for all the respect you have for her! As a fan it means so much!

That feeling when you're biggest opponent is yourself. That's her. She keeps on uploading videos as if she's like "I have to beat my last performance". This is a song that we all need. This gives us hope. Morissette is really a gift from heaven. ❤️
I think morissette recorded this once cause I can see her a little bit of exhaustation at the end of climax yes its pre recorded cuz they needed to sync with 3rd ave but I know morissette can do it and recorded this one time ;)

I also think that rasp on the high notes was a stylistic choice, it adds variation, it adds texture. And it sounds so good to my ears, i can feel the vulnerability and the emotion of the song.

I think that was Adonis Tabanda who was doing those looooow notes, he's Morissette's Music Director. I would also like to give you my opinion regarding comments that say you or anyone else isn't delivering emotion. They probably mean it but so far I have yet to see a comment section that doesn't have those comments for any vocalist. They aren't wrong but breaking down that generates those feelings and delivering them will not make them change their mind because it's subjective. Even when all the mechanics of sound are used perfectly for some people it will sound like a genuine emotional feeling and for others it will sound like a computer trying to be a human.

That was a great observation. I agree with your opinion about the style/color she uses in hitting some high notes, sometimes they are clear and sometimes they are cloudy. And yes, we can’t do anything about that because it’s her style of telling the story. I just realized that in singing, in a way, in order to achieve the emotion needed in a song, clear tone is compensated. Growls, dynamics etc are Singing Symbols that intensify the message of a song.

Good point about putting color on notes and phrases: Main thing should be if the singer CHOOSES to do it or if they're forced to because of a lack of ability. Obviously Morissette doesn't lack ability :-)

Howww dare you suggest morissette and autotune in the same sentence!?!?!? That's a no no fellow vocal coach! Jajajajaja we know she doesn't use it or need it just a little Reverb. And I agree with you! She could have done that F#5 with a clearer sound and with a more relaxed tone, but she went for the harsher and punchy sound cause a clear neautral and free belt sometimes doesn't give the emotion you need, sometimes it just sounds to pretty and proper and sometimes we need to make it sound harsh and strained, and that's where a lot singers get vocally fatigued but not morri. You can tell that her voice was a little tired since the begging cause some end notes were a little off and also in the climax, but that's how you know how good her technic is, that even prior to have your voice tired for whatever reason, she was able to sing a song that has many vocal jumps, register changes, riffs, belts and lows that would get her voice very tired but she was able to slay the song with power, resonance and proper placement and technic without getting vocally hoarsed. When you are that gifted and have such control of your vocal instrument, you can add rasp and tension to a note without hurting your voice and add many distortions and still not raise your larynx or sing with a closed throat and get your voice tired. She is a masterful singer! Her technic is super solid and she has way more pros then cons when it comes to her technic. So yes that F#5 was meant to be like that to add emotion and wow factor. 💪💪💪🔥🔥🔥🔥,(Also PS I know you probably think the same way. I'm just stating facts cause jesus you know?)
