Bottom line, Ditka just got lazy, and the team suffered because of it. That may sound harsh, but it is true. To only win 1 Super Bowl with that assembly of players (six Hall of Famers), is completely and utterly unacceptable. Ditka was more interested in doing commercials , tv, radio and newspaper spots than keeping an eye and attention on his team. Very sad, because he could have been compared to the Parcels and Belichek's if he would have been more focused. Hell of a player in his day, but a coach, average at best. Wasted potential.
Yes and no. There were a lot of big egos on those Bear teams and yes, Da Coach arguably had the biggest ego of them all. IMO, it all started when George Halas hired Ditka over Buddy Ryan to be the head coach in '82. And naturally, Buddy was not happy about that. Even though Da Bears won it all in '85, there were big cracks in their foundation that season - the biggest when Marino and the Dolphins exposed Buddy's 46 Defense on MNF. Ditka wanted the nickel and Buddy literally told him to fuck off. Then when Buddy left to become the Eagles head coach after the season, it just wasn't the same intensity with the defensive players. But even more so was the Player's Strike in '87 - and when Ditka called his replacements the "Real Bears", that's when the true colors showed, not just with Ditka, but the regulars as well. And of course, Jim McMahon wasn't exactly in top shape - partying all the time after winning it all in '85........and he was ultimately shown the door after '88. Wilber Marshall found greener pastures, ended up winning another Super Bowl with the Redskins. Willie Gault ended up with the Raiders. Heart attack aside, Ditka's intensity was still there to the end, but the talent no longer was. Cheap ownership (in the McKaskeys) didn't help, either.
