    Superb, exciting, awesome to watch--all I do is look through my vintage Classic C8/C5s with my aberrated old eyes :-) and even that is still thrilling...

    Wow. I literally spent over $4k for this, with accessories. This is my first telescope and it's supposed to arrive tommorrow. I'm so excited.

      Hey Buddy, how's it going with your edge HD, is it any good? I've purchased one on lay-by should have it in couple of months.

      @@andy121bplp Sorry for the late response! So, I did make a major mistake that required shipping it back to Celestron for repairs. I also purchased "starsense align" which is AMAZING because it automatically takes pictures of the sky and aligns it for you. Unfortunately, it was kind of cloudy one night and the star align camera couldn't see any stars to solve plates, so it started attempting goofy positions to find something. While I was staring at the app, my eye peice jammed against the motorized mount, which stripped one of the motor gears. It also ruined the threads which the diagonal mirror box attaches to, so I couldn't screw or unscrew anything. Plus because the up and down gear was stripped, starsense was wildly inaccurate. Truth is, I had no idea this could've happened and it was my fault. I didn't notice it was jamming itself because it was dark and I was wearing headphones. I also couldn't find the power button and shut it off in time. Lesson learned. To be fair, Celestron as a company was extremely slow, but they were amazing. They fixed everything under the warranty and shipped it back to me for free, even though I admitted it was 100% my fault.
      You will want to get better eyepeices immediately. The light pollution is rough near me, but the moon looks absolutely incredible with this scope. I tried seeing galaxies last night and they looked pretty awful with a Televue 2x Barlow and 13mm Naglar. So far the only planet I've been able to see is Jupiter, just because of where I live.
      All I can say is that I love this telescope, but keep in mind that you need to have realistic expectations. Almost every single picture you see online from this scope is processed. What you see through the lens itself will be much different. Still, it's a lot of fun.

    Nicely done Russel.
    You are going to love that scope at f/10 for planetary, particularly Saturn. Question; in your OAG, did you have any difficulty getting a good guide star? I am finding that different targets sometimes makes finding a suitable guide star hard to find with the OAG. I have the same guide camera that you have.

    • @RussellsAstrophotography
      @RussellsAstrophotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much mate. I’m definitely keen to try the scope at f10 for planetary! I did notice fewer stars than normal with ten OAG, I think there were only about 15 stars in frame durning this image, so imagine I might encounter moving forward.

    Try using a backfocus distance of 110-111 mm, it helped me a lot with star elongation. The recommended 105mm plus filter correction wasn’t working very well for me. Good luck with reflections too. Cheers.

      @DavidQuad 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RussellsAstrophotography Yes I had, but only when bright stars are close to the field, maybe close to the end of the image circle but I haven't checked that. Moving the field center away from the star solves the problem, sometimes including the bright star in the field is a solution too. But some other times it's impossible to find a good position. I ended removing the reducer, don't use it anymore. Sometimes you won't see it, integrate 900 seconds and there it is the bright arc :)

    need some help for guiding setup. i need clarifications for the following:
    1) which OAG is better suited zwo OAG-L or Celestron OAG?
    2) would the new camera 2600MC DUO work well for Edge 8?
    Pls advise.

    Interesting. When I received my OAG the prism was smashed too. Celestron eventually sent the retailer a new prism who shipped it to me.

    A video on the Sky Watcher MN vs Edge HD 8 would be interesting. The edge HD 8 with FR and ASI2600 provides an image scale of 0.55 arc seconds per pixel. The MN provides a more manage image scale and wider FOV. Does the slower edge with higher resolution beat the MN?

    Gz on the new scope, and lovely result :)
    Why did you specifically get the Celestron OAG? There are plenty of OAG's available. Obviously it's a good OAG but there are lots of other OAG's if it was out of stock I assume?
    Hope you won't regret the 2600MC later on, while mono is awesome, the 2600 sensor(both mono and OSC) is really good.

      @RussellsAstrophotography  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, sorry for the slow response, I’ve been away on holiday these past few weeks.
      I went with the Celestron for three reasons really. 1. I know a lot of people use it with the edge and it works really well. There’s also a lot of info about backfocus and setting it up etc. 2. The prism is larger than most other OAGs on the market 3. You can rotate the sensor and OAG together for framing. This means the prison always stays in the same place and doesn’t rotate in front of the sensor.
      I hope this helps and thanks so much for watching 👍

    I've been seriously considering getting the Edge 8", but I'm increasingly concerned about its limitations photographically. Under normal circumstances it seems to be fine, but from everything I'm reading, once you get into using the reducer (and perhaps the HyperStar), some serious vignetting can occur unless a smaller sensor is used - forget about full-frame. Given that astrophotography is the chief reason I want to get back into astronomy (I've been a serious photographer for 50 years) I just want to make sure I get it right in terms of telescope choice. All the indicators are that perhaps I should stump up the extra money for a 9.25" - and a correspondingly larger mount - because the 9.25 is more user friendly in photographic terms. Your thoughts?

  • @catherinegrimes2308
    @catherinegrimes2308 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You have a nice setup.
    I noticed that you had problems balancing the telescope even though you had a counterbalance weight at the front. I have the Edge HD 8 like you and have had a lot of trouble balancing it on my GEM45, the telescope is back heavy and the mount has very little friction so the slightest out of balance is noticeable. I bought a Celestron dovetail for the C9.25 that is a little bit longer and a friend mounted it underneath the existing dovetail so that the dovetail extends further out the back by about 114mm. I haven't tried it yet but it should balance a lot better than it has done before and hopefully I can remove the forward counterbalance weight.
    I am thinking of getting the ZWO EAF and use it with my ASIair Pro. Some people have had problems using it with the Edge telescopes, have you had any problems or niggles using it? The Edge had focus locking screws, presumably you have them unlocked after setting the focus using the EAF to allow the focus to be refined during imaging?

    • @RussellsAstrophotography
      @RussellsAstrophotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Catherine. Yes the edge really is very back heavy and tricky to balance. The counterweight and large dovetail really helps. I’ve not had any issues with the Asiair and the ZWO EAF and the edge. Everything has gone incredibly smoothly so far. There is a specific adapter you can buy for the SCT telescopes so you’ll need to pick that up. Yes you need to leave the locking screws open once the EAF is attached.
      Thanks for watching. Sorry for the slow response, I’ve been away these past few weeks.

    Hello Russell, Excellent shot and use of the scope. I am thinking about pulling the plug on one of these and have a question for you if you don't mind. I will also be using the WZO EAF focuser and was wondering how you handle the mirror locks, do you leave these unlocked so that your focuser can adjust the focus as needed when switching filters or do you go through a focus routine with each filter change? I know you are using ASIAIR where as I am using NINA and it has a setting you can use to focus after each filter change. So just wondering how you deal with the focus lock if at all? By the way, congratulations on your first light with the new to you scope. Fantastic shot if the galaxy.

    I have the exact same OTA, reducer, OAG, guide cam, but I have the 294MC Pro. One question I had, was did you have to move the prism up or down in the OAG? I have never even looked to see if mine is adjusted properly, I just threw it on the way it came from the factory. I am not even sure I know how to adjust it, or how to tell if it's down too low or too high? Maybe I will do some searches online to get me answer, but thought I'd ask anyways. Also, I'd love to know your guiding settings. I use the ASIAIR Plus, and I've been turning the BIN2 option on, and guiding to anywhere between 1 to 5 seconds exposure.

    • @RussellsAstrophotography
      @RussellsAstrophotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats cool, sounds like a great set up. Regarding the OAG, I moved it down slightly but not much from the factory position. You want to have it as low as possible without blocking the sensor. With the 294mm there seemed to be a big gap between the sensor and the OAG prism so I lowered it slightly. I haven't tried BIN2 for guising yet, but will give it a go. I usually use 2-3seconds for guiding and have found with my CEM60 that the aggression settings need to be fairly low. I will try and include the guide settings in the next video with the Edge HD. Thanks for watching and clear skies 👍

I just set this up last night and got good focus with the EAF and polar aligned. However, I don't think I was well balanced. DEC error on guiding was very high. I was getting numbers like 30 on DEC and 5 on RA. Nowhere near your subarcsecond values. Not sure if anyone can advise what could be going on.
