  • As the first black super model, Iman revolutionized an industry that hesitated to acknowledge those who were "different." Despite her struggles with shyness and looks she describes as "nothing special" she took New York, and then the world, by storm. From there she built a cosmetics empire, stretched her acting legs in numerous films, and married pop superstar David Bowie. On this episode of "InnerVIEWS with Ernie Manouse," our conversation with international super model Iman.

    Iman was more than a supermodel and David Bowie's wife. The wisdom, depth, and insight, and intelligence of this woman is pretty extraordinary and moving. I have so much love and respect for Iman. She's so inspiring.

    Back in 90', David & Iman came into the high end Japanese rest, Robata in Beverly. Hills (I was the bartender) for dinner. All the staff raved about how gracious & polite they both were and what a pleasure it was to wait on them. Genuine class. The total opposite was Robert DeNiro, who I greatly admire as an actor, but what a foul mouth this guy has & an attitude to match. The way he cussed out Naomi Campbell & her girlfriend would have made a sailor blush. Really sad to see & hear.

    When I was a young art director in NYC I booked Iman for a Bloomingdale's billing insert. Even at that time, before she was married to Bowie and before she became a spokesman and symbol for the rights of African women, I was aware of her intelligence and sensitivity. And she was an incredible model...professional and aware of what he job was and how to give her best. I admire her.

    She embodies perfection. I can se9e why David fell immediately for her. Intelligent, beautiful, honest and a real class act. David was just like that. A couple made in heaven. Their baby was what David needed too a real family. He loved his son immensely but Iman gave him all that he wanted and longed for. She was her own person and so was David. They were the epitome of true love and respected each other. Iman I wish I could talk with you. I admire you sooo much.

    I admire Iman, she's been through the fire, and she's come out the other side, still beautiful, articulate, intelligent and wise, very wise. Love her, she's so down to Earth. "Vacuous beauty is empty." "Beauty and content." Iman I love that she teaches people to not let others devalue them. If you love and value yourself, and know who you are, nobody can take that from you. We celebrate you Iman, thank you for celebrating all of us.

    Iman is a very deep insightful woman with a big heart to have her own cosmetic brand for people of color & Caucasians. She doesn't even approve of being single out & being preferred before African American's that's why she is speaking out for other black models too.

  • @darkmaitri
    @darkmaitri 8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    Iman and David Bowie and Yoko and John Lennon both had an incredible impact on me as a young woman. Growing up in 1960's - 70's America mixed-race with no white, was harder than many now would think. I hated looking how I looked and had a strange inner hope that something would somehow help me to look more white. It wasn't that I hated myself. I feel like I saw and felt my own value as a human. But I felt like others didn't. When they saw me they saw my skin color first. Other characteristics and talents I possessed were secondary or tertiary. Around the time I was twenty-three (1983) I learned Bowie had married Iman. I was surprised and part of me was bewildered. Like many other young women then and now, the constructions of beauty that proliferate in the media were how I interpreted beauty, as well. At that time there were very few women of color in the media, as actresses, models, artists, politicians, anything! But with these two marriages I began to feel like maybe there were men and people in general who would be able to see me as possibly beautiful and not as defective. You really cannot imagine what it is like to have feelings like that. Franz Fanon, a writer who had a big impact on critical theory describes how a inner colonisation can happen when a child and later adult is surrounded by images and messages that state who they are does not matter. So he imparts quite well what it is like. Anyhow, I recognised Iman and Yoko had to be really impressive and uniquely dazzling women to be loved by such dynamic and impressive men. And I set about becoming my own impressively dynamic woman. So Thank You Iman for being You! Because it has meant so much to Me! :)

      Ewwww.... well forgive me for a mistake. Can you not read? Or is it having to process complex ideas that is circumnavigating your comprehension? Should I attempt to reword it in a more prosaic idiom?

    • @darkmaitri
      @darkmaitri 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If someone is bored by these issues I would sincerely question their ability to be compassionate. And I would feel sad for them. Passion about our lived experiences is one the few places where the mundane can be infused with the energy that is passion. And bored is so opposite an engaged and passionate experience. But truthfully, I could care less if someone became bored. I didn't write it only for them. Most artists recognize once you put something out there, it is no longer yours and you cannot go about explainjng your words, photo, whatever, in an attempt to manage people's reactions or interpretations.

      stella rawr because DNA studies of horners are very limited, now when you look at their DNA its 100% african. Somalis share DNA and culture with other East african people like oromo, afar etc. Its so stupid and sad when people say somalis are white or arab its insulting honestly because they mean you are mixed and thats why you look like that. Somalis language and culture go way back in time and to deny it by calling them arab etc is sad.

    The perfect shade of foundation for your natural skin color, is your natural skin with no foundation, it matches your natural skin color, & it expresses that vanity is not a value. I was at a grocery store yesterday and this lovely & obese African American woman could not pay her bill & was trying to make phones calls to her bank about an issue with her card not working, and no one was helping her to sit down to call her bank, they were just hoping she would leave, and to imagine some skinny rich woman buying foundation to look hotter than sickly medium-poor people with that hopeless look in their eyes.
