In my mind this the absolute height of a love song Jerry is able to be 100%authentic in his emotional cohesion. He makes it sound so genuine. Might be my new favorite replacing the former #1 Box of Rain. A new jam in the #1 position. For now anyway this is numero uno
Fell in love with this song the first time I heard it on a bootleg. It broke my heart when they changed the arrangement a year later. I always thought a good question for Jerry in one of his interviews would be why did they change it? It only lasted this way for a tour in 73’ but the energy was fantastic.

@@cglasford1 I think of this song as being in the more upbeat realm. I've heard a couple that are maybe even a little quicker than this but I can't remember where. I don't mean to be negative but what I was really getting at is the fact that I LOVE this song when it's upbeat and really can't stand it when it's played slowly. :-)
@@cglasford1 The 77 stuff - specifically the Cornell 77' show - is really slow. I mean they are all great but compared to that show the original beat to this song is much better.
as a guitar player, jerry had the most interesting way of playing. it's kind of like classical fingerwork in some ways. It's amazing how complex his picking style is with a missing finger.
@luvroannterra This is just a MONSTER SHOW! Also, first performances of Row Jimmy, Loose Lucy, Here Comes Sunshine, China Doll, Wave that Flag, and EYES OF THE WORLD. How ridiculous is that!
@pcburgh01 You`re right, man. I toured with the dead off and on for 20 odd years and they were the only band doing what they did. They weren`t called a "Jam Band" cuz` the term had`nt been coined yet. "They`re not the best at what they do....They`re the only ones that do what they do" - Bill Grahm.

Does anybody know where I can find guitar tabs or sheet music for this version? The slow version is the same chords, but there's a huge difference between the two.
heh, some old head was askin me 'bout purple sage, when i was singin it on his cassette, ridin in his ol' truck when i was a pup and i laughed and show'd him the stealy/yang on my shoulder, thnx for the memories.
@pcburgh01 Agreed. Not to mention Umphrey's, pgroove, conspirator (or disco biscuits, if thats what u prefer), sts9, ymsb, the bridge, the heavy pets, the new mastersounds, soulive, the new deal, lotus, and so many others
How anyone could prefer the later 70s version of this tune is beyond me...I get the similarity to china cat and whatnot, but hell if this isn't one hell of a jam
most of the early 73 ones are. they were already starting to slow it down by the end of the year but i haven't figured out yet when exactly it was completely changed. there was only one played in 74 and one in 75 which while it has the diff. format, now that i'm listening to it on archive, actually has a mean fucking groove too. anyway, yeah, probably any 73 one you can find will probably be like this :)
I love how I loath when this song comes on anytime post 77, but I hear it now (72-74), F:))ing awesome, phils bass with jerry, smokin'! guitar. That is the joy that is the dead. Music is different now (2011), no need trying figure out why (catchy, but no talent), enjoy being the odd ones, even compared to lady gaga.
Jerry’s lead playing is the sound of the guitar smiling if I’ve ever heard.
First version I heard this song it was real slow and it’s frickin awesome. But, this faster version is funky as hell. I like toooo
It was 73.....
@Tyler Thompson - This!! That is the best description of his playing!
So sweet. That sound system was a machine.

Greatest rendition. One of the best show recordings ever IMO. Tremendous show. Top 20 IMO.
was there - can't say it was the best out of so many, but the boys were on and so many new numbers - and a sprung wood basketball floor!

Hunter wrote it for Betty cantor-Jackson and Rex Jackson…their love
When Rex died, the tone shift was natural. A family member passed away

Such and underappreciated tune.
Classic Garcia/ Hunter
Best version of TLEA ever so fast and jerrys solos are so fun
Wow what a smokin' version.
The first version ever played live.
the quicker version of this song is one of my favorites

Absolutely love this Version, generally like the faster , more upbeat R&B versions of all their songs 🎉
Is it just me, or would this version fit in with China/Rider? Start with this, segue into China and then wrap with Rider
My favorite version of this wonderful song. Love how they funked it up! ❤️
this was the day I was born in Toronto Ontario- thanks mom and dad.
First time Dead performed this song live & also the best!
Agreed
Definitely the GOAT version of the song. I listen to it almost every day
This show... idk how they didn’t lift offf, truly straight fire!!!
I think it is the only upbeat recording of this tune. My favorite version.
@@royalewithcheese12 First year they played it this way. Story goes Jerry saw a cover band play it slower and liked it and started playing that way.
I play this every day. Such a jamming version
Merry run around, sailing up and down
Looking for a shove in some direction
Got it from the top, it's nothing you can stop
Lord, you know they made a fine connection
They love each other, Lord you can see it's true
Lord you can see it's true, Lord you can see it's true
He could pass his time around some other line
But you know he chose this place beside her
Don't get in the way, there's nothing you can say
Nothing that you need to add or do
They love each other, Lord you can see it's true
Lord you can see it's true, Lord you can see it's true
Its' nothing, they explain it's like a diesel train
Better not be there when it rolls over
And when that train rolls in, you won't know where it's been
You gotta try to see a little further
They love each other, Lord you can see it's true
Lord you can see it's true, Lord you can see it's true
Though you'll make a noise, they just can't hear your voice
They're on a dizzy ride on you're cold sober
They love each other, Lord you can see it's true
Lord you can see it's true, Lord you can see it's true
Hope you will believe what I say is true
Everything I did, I heard it first from you
Heard your news report, you knew you're falling short
Pretty soon won't trust you for the weather
When that ship comes in, you won't know where it's been
You got to try to see a little further
Thanks Ray!

Pure unadulterated awesomeness

The upbeat version of this tune is by far the best. When they slowed it down, it lost its power.
Josh Done agreed, I still like the later, slower versions, but this version is waaaaaaaay better!
Josh Done I like the JGB versions best
Agreed - my fave version is Winterland soundcheck 02.24.74. Seems any version after '74 is slow and lacking "umph." Much better at higher tempo!!!
Sorry but JGB is ALWAYS BETTER
cameron ware Lyrics did NOT include THAT line...#WallOfSound
imo best version hands down
Such a great version. Just saw the Eric Krasno band bust this out last night all acoustic as well as Sugaree. Did a beautiful job on both
