same! my first really bad flare-up was when I was around 8 or 9 months old, when I had to be weaned because my mother was pregnant again and dried up in her second trimester. it was so bad I was rushed to the ER because I looked like I had been in a house fire. 98% of soaps, cleansers, fragrances, etc will set it off, along with tap water if I drink it, nightshades, gluten, and dairy. I missed tons of school for it as a child but now my skin just looks like hers all the time. I have constantly gotten shit for not showering every day, like showering at all isn't one of the most painful parts of my self-care routine

Ive had bad eczema on my hands for a long time. It can get so bad my skin just peels off and even cold water burns. Hemp oil cream is the only thing that helps, even the prescription stuff doesn't work.

    • @LovelyLawla
      @LovelyLawla 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Same here. Eczema since I was tiny and still have just insanely dry skin. Thankfully my eczema only flares now with major stress or my hands getting very cold, so with gloves everywhere, I can mostly avoid it. But I also can't shower daily and when I was at uni a lot of people thought I was gross, etc. Nope, I still wash, just not by wetting my entire body! Even though my skin is what I would consider "good" these days when I do shower it is a process! I've got to exfoliate the dead skin and use a lotion on my skin while in the shower, then pat my skin dry and out on another moisturiser before my skin is totally dry. Adding in that my hair is currently waist length and really thick, when I go for a shower until I'm done, it can literally be hours! I've never loved working from home so much because, with zoom calls, I can get an extra few days out of my hair before washing it that I couldn't when I worked in the office!

Figuring out what's triggering an allergic or intolerant reaction is a horrible and sometimes lengthy process. Especially when family doesn't believe it, even the ones in the medical field. Like reacting to Shae butter.

    • @carelsby

Thats the thing isnt it. People can be allergic or intolerant to basically anything. I have friends and family that have gotten frustrated with me bc i have to refuse gifts of hygiene products with fragrance or citrus oils in them. Its so hard to explain sometimes lol

My roommate is allergic to milk proteins, soy, eggs, citrus, and wheat. None of it is an intolerance. She for years had an issue with eating and getting things down. For years doctors told her couldn't find anything wrong. Her lower throat would swell but it could only be found through throat scope. Took them far too long to suggest an allergy. She had this issue for over 30 years.

My mum has non-anaphylactic “cold urticaria”, which basically means she’d break out in hives all over when that area is exposed to colder temperatures. It honestly looks so painful, even though it doesn’t trigger anaphylaxis (blocked airway due to swelling from the allergy, for those who don’t want to look it up). I’m worried that will change one day, though; that her allergy will get worse... 😥

I think what's really sad about these programs and the comments under each video is how many people have just been left to suffer with debilitating conditions without help.
As someone who's also had a number of chronic conditions that took a long time to identify and required going to specialist after specialist, its really frustrating to see this happening to so many people.
The way our current health system is so fragmented and underfunded, it's so difficult to find a doctor who has the time or willingness to actually try and solve ongoing conditions or more complex issues. When we have the knowledge, tools and medicine to treat things that cause so much distress to people and prevent them from doing thier job or daily tasks, yet they go untreated, it just shows how much the current system is lacking. The NHS is so important and the fact that many people have to seek private help to get the treatments they need makes them inaccessible to those who don't have enough money.

This is the state of the NHS. The primary docs handle 90% of cases with 10% of the budget and are strongly discouraged from recommending specialists. I knew she had eczema the second I saw it. People can’t go to specialists without a primary referral. It’s very restrictive and significantly delays care for a multitude of medical and surgical conditions.

When I was 2, I got eczema on the bend of my arms. It went away for a long time. When I went to high school, I broke out on my neck, face and arms. It went away once I was put on steroid creams. When I reached my senior years, it came back and never went away. It became extreme to the point I couldn't sleep anymore. I fought for 3 year solid years from 2015-2018. I was clear from late 2018 and all of 2019. When COVID happened, I was consistently washing my hands and now a year later and my hands have never been the same.... I stopped going to a doctor because steroid creams is all I was given. I'm now finding ways to treat it. While it does get better, it ends up worse later.

Had something similar when I was 13/14 until I was 16. However I never had eczema as a child. I suddenly broke out across my whole body, it was terrible. I was constantly peeling skin, bleeding, swollen, inflamed,... Nothing would help, I literally tried everything from steroid creams to homeopathy. No allergies, nothing. One day it just went away. Since covid my hands have broken out again, I'm hoping they will go down again one day. It's such a pain 😫

I was only diagnosed with dermatographia after two different allergy tests (skin prick and intradermal) came back negative and the allergist happened to notice a welt forming after I unconsciously scratched my arm. She said that figuring out all the triggers is near impossible and that minimizing reactions is the best way to deal. She told me to take Zyrtec (specifically Zyrtec as it works best on the histamine response in dermatographia) daily, use only CeraVe moisturizing cream, and to avoid using hot water. The citrus and fragrance probably trigger your dermatographia because they can be skin irritants, causing you to scratch, which causes the dermatographia histamine response, which causes itchiness, which causes scratching, and the cycle continues. Everyone is different, but I responded well to the Zyrtec and CeraVe so they might be worth a shot if you haven't tried already?

I have something similar called asteatotic eczema. I'd had winter outbreaks of it as a child, but my most recent attack had been the worst and most stubborn by far. I'm also an immunocompromised infant teacher, which means my hands get washed or sanitized a lot!
Luckily, my hands and fingers feel so much better now. The dermatologist prescribed a steroid cream and talked about how we could help heal and maintain the skin barrier with different cleansers and moisturizers. I use a lot of baby eczema products, as they're always a safe choice. My favorite products come from Baby Dove, Baby CeraVe, Aveeno baby eczema therapy, and Aquaphor.
    TLDR: Dermatologists are amazing

Ok so the title is incorrect then? Lol. She’s not allergic to hand washing at all. She just has to use emollient based creams to wash her hands in.
I have contact dermatitis & a milder form of OCD - which includes over washing of hands, & I can’t bring myself to use the emollient creams as I don’t find my hands are clean 😖
I’m having quite a bad flare up at the moment with huge splits in my fingers & palms, that won’t heal. So I sympathise. It makes me very self conscious too. I’ve had eczema since I was a baby & for the most part it’s cleared up except on my hands.
I only wish my doctors would help a bit more / be more understanding but nevermind! We just have to get on with it the best we can.

This looks like topical steroid withdrawal. If she stopped using steroid cream, moisturisers & let her hands dry out it’d take 6-12 months for her skin to fully heal. I’ve gone through the same experience and it was tough but leaving my skin alone was the best option in the end.

    • @sophietheunicorn3579

It’s the constant hair washing with the soap, the average person doesn’t come into contact with soap that often. Soaps an alkaline so it destroys skin the more you use it. Not surprising hairdressers, doctors, chefs etc have dryer hands.

@@ElisabethMount I’m sorry to hear about your condition, that really sucks. My mom was a hairstylist too.
Lots of conditions, allergies included, are caused by environmental factors. It’s insane, but there are so many chemicals, toxins and carcinogens that surround our day to day life. Household cleaners, hair dyes and bleach, soaps and shampoos and conditioners, our food and water, our actual outside environment, air quality, etc. Pesticides are in a lot of things too, and there are lots of toxic particulates in our air, which can be worse in certain locations. It’s no wonder chronic illnesses of all sorts are so common today.
