@@annem2922 The gates of hell have not and cannot prevail over the Church -- but it certainly can over those who reject and rebel against the Church, walk away from the Holy Tradition, refuse to hear the voice of the Holy Councils, such as the Eighth Oecumenical Council, which took place in Constantinople in 879, with the participation of the representatives of the Pope and which the Pope accepted and ratified. This acceptance lasted until the 11th century when the Filioque was accepted in Rome (in 1014) and even after this, until after the anathemas in 1054. BUT... alas... the pope and people in Rome followed the leadership of non-Romans, of Franks, from the north, which had long before embraced the heretical addition to the Creed ("and the son").
History is very clear: the pope, post 1000, walked away from the Council and Faith that his predecessors had embraced. The Pope and those in the north rejected the Nicene Creed that was accepted in the Councils for 1000 years.

As one who wants to come into the Orthodox faith and out of Reformed protestantism, I will add a comment as someone who has had a life time of protestantism. It was always told to me that salvation is a single event. It is a change of heart, a mystical rebirth of one who is spiritually dead. Once we are saved, we are saved. What protestants refer to as sanctification is something else that comes about by obeying the teachings of Christ and the scriptures. Nothing mystical happens. We are simply more Christ-like and we do Christ-like things because we ARE saved. Doing good works is evidence of salvation and not a progression towards salvation. I was also taught (nothing about Eastern Orthodoxy) but that the alternative is Rome where good works are a way of earning salvation. The notion that theosis is a progession and not some sort of "earning" is hard to get a western mind around. I'm striving, and I'm more able to say more about what Theosis is not rather than what it is. Holy Baptism in the Orthodox church unites me to Christ's body, but salvation continues to develop and mature and grow as a participate in the church, its teachings, and its mysteries in all areas of my life . . . but I'm not earning/paying-for salvation. It is my understanding from Christ's sermon on the mount that good works unaccompanied by a devoted heart wanting to please God are nothing more than empty works. I hope I'm on the right track in my understanding. But, the key difference to me in the disconnect between protestant salvation and orthodox theosis is what I started with. Protestant salvation is a single event EVIDENCED by continuing in good works and not developed by good works.

    • @annem2922
      @annem2922 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with @berwynsigns
Catholics and Orthodox Christians don’t believe that we are saved through works, But rather that faith must be accompanied by good works as it is written in the book of James. It’s Luther who was uncomfortable with that Book and claimed “faith alone” which for us is heretical. Christ is our Salvation.

I am a protestant believer. I listen to a lot of orthodox teachings, and I truly resonate with most of them. I love Jesus I am in relationship with him. He is my savior. He is my Lord. And I do believe that in taking communion It is far more than a symbol, but it is in some mystical way I cannot comprehend it is the body and the blood of Jesus. I say all that to say that a “ problem” that I have with orthodoxy is that I a believer and follower of Christ is actually considered not part of the body of Christ but outside the church because I am at Protestant. Yet, I continue to listen to many orthodox teachers setting aside that belief that I am not a true Christian, or even on the path to salvation.

God must be able to work with those outside of official Orthodox communion, because so many people cannot participate in an Orthodox church. You can't believe God is love and exclude all outside Orthodox communion from relationship with Christ, or theosis as God wills.I appreciate the Truth of the church, but God knows all, and knows who love Him. There's no option for me to be in communion, but I am studying Orthodox teachings, and Christ knows that I want the Truth.

With this logic then I suppose not even the incarnation is necessary, seeing has how all that’s needed is your mental ascents. The Church is the continuation of Christ’s physical presence on earth. As there is one Christ there is one Church. There is not a union of multiple brides who all claim to have the Holy Spirit whilst contradicting each other. There can only be one. Truth is definitive and universal, the humanistic logic that God saves outside of His Church via the heresies or flat out denials of other sects and religions is fundamentally flawed and spiritually atheistic.

As far as I understand theosis; as the true purpose of human life. (I am an Anglican/Anglo-Catholic). In terms my missional work in my church, how do I put this across in simple enough terms that folk will understand? Also can I clarify my own understanding?
In short, (going off St. Augustine.)
    Where we are:
We are born into original sin - We can't deny it, because we see it all around us.
    The objective:
To become like Jesus, in complete unity to be co-heirs with Christ. Sinless.
    How do we get there:
Faith, the sacramentum, prayer, self-control, good works.
Am I right in thinking about these are three important points that can aid our understanding?
The sacraments: comes from Tertullian from the Latin word sacramentum. Which was the oath of allegience a new recruit swore upon joining the Roman Army - Tertullian saw the "sacramentum" as a change to a new way life. Hence the analogy. Christianity is not a religion but a way of life. We don't worship a big beardy chap in the sky armed with thunderbolts (Zeus), rather we seek to become like Christ.
Then there is the definition of worship, which can get confused in most protestant denominations. As far as I am aware, it is the partaking of sacraments that is the actual worship, whilst hymns and songs are praise and thanksgiving. Therefore the it is partaking of the sacramentum, a change to the spiritual life to become more and more like Christ, which is written into the liturgy; even the Book of Common Prayer from the Church of England, we don't see the wood for the trees.
For a point of Martin Luther, and faith without works. His argument was that if you are Christian then good works should naturally follow. That doesn't take into account human nature. For me, Lutheranism only has the potential of working if you have theosis as a datum. If you partake of the sacramentum, the spiritual life, to be like Christ - then yes Good works will naturally follow.

Unceasing prayer isn’t gained by Buddhist style mediation. It’s about stilling the heart. Not letting things pass as a mere passive observer, but becoming watchful and vigilant over the heart. Unceasing prayer is the weapon by which we obtain watchfulness which in turn, enables us to strive towards dispassion. Prostrations help to humble the body and thus the soul follows. It is in pride that we see ourselves beyond this tool and a rejection of incarnation in that we fail to see the importance our bodies have in struggling towards salvation. By humbling the body, the soul learns to submit and the body no longer dictates its directions, this in turn, enhances one’s prayer life and helps to cultivate noetic prayer which in turn leads to ceaseless prayer. It’s done in steps. There is no short cut and their will be set backs and back slides. Push forward. No matter what get up and carry your cross.

Not a clergyman, just unworthy laywoman.
This is the Orthodox Study Bible note for Luke 9:46-50:
"9:46-50 Little child: See note on Mt 18:1- 4. Theophylact sees John's comment as a regret, his conscience having been pricked by what Christ said about the
least and the great. St. Ambrose, on the other hand, sees John as expecting full obedience to accompany such blessings. In either interpretation, Christ's response shows those acting in
good faith are not excluded, even if currently they are not numbered
among the disciples. "See how divine grace is at work even in those who are not His disciples" (Theoph; see also Nm
11:24-30). On those using Christ's name without good faith, see 11:23; Acts 19:13-16.

Each day should be devoted to miracles. The purpose of time is to enable you to learn how to use time constructively. It is thus a teaching device and a means to an end. Time will cease when it is no longer useful in facilitating learning.
Miracles make minds one in God. They depend on cooperation, because the Sonship is the sum of all that God created. Miracles therefore reflect the laws of eternity, not of time.
Miracles reawaken the awareness that the spirit, not the body, is the altar of truth. This is the recognition that leads to the healing power of the miracle.
Miracles are part of an interlocking chain of forgiveness which, when completed, is the Atonement. Atonement works all the time and in all the dimensions of time.
The Holy Spirit is the highest communication medium. Miracles do not involve this type of communication, because they are _temporary_ communication devices. When you return to your original form of communication with God by direct revelation, the need for miracles is over.

I was raised Mormon. They believe God is actually a deified man, and that man can progress to the same essence as God this is obviously completely heretical.
I have been a protestant for most of my Christian life. Evangelicals are so terrified to fall into the little gods heresy, that I think they are missing a huge aspect.
If you read John 10 and 82, you come to the inescapable conclusion, that yes, what God has in mind for us is some type of nature that is more Godlike than our current human nature. However, not the same essence as God.
Thank you for orthodox denominations having held onto this truth that was Apparently commonly understood among all early church fathers. The modern church, especially evangelicalism, is missing a lot.

Full sanctification (theosis) is the grand depositum which God has lodged with the people called Methodists; and for the sake of propagating this chiefly He appeared to have raised us up. - Wesley
This doctrine was for John Wesley the central emphasis of the Methodist movement. He believed Methodism existed because God had given them the calling to spread the teaching of full sanctification (theosis).
All Methodists in that day after a conscious conversion began to seek for the removal of the least and last remains of the carnal mind. This reveals the secret of the peculiar power which characterized their ministry. They did not backslide because they set their faces immediately after their conversion toward the Canaan of Perfect Love. This was the goal to which they all aspired.

So when Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life, nobody comes to the father except through me,he was talking about the church?.
What about That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life?
What about John 3:16? Did God give his only begotten church or his only begotten son?
What his church on the cross or his son?
Did the church die for your sins or did Christ?
Was christ betrayed by judas or was the church? Was the thief on the cross saved by christ or by the church???
You have NO right to tell the Christian world that they have no salvation outside of the church... if I baptize a man on his death he'd and he confesses with his mouth that that christ is his Savior and asks for forgiveness and then dies...are you telling us all that he would go to hell because he wasn't orthodox???

What is a church , is it the house of God? Is it a building with holy relics?
Is a church a priest and a congregation who practice the holy sacraments?
What is a church, perhaps a place where God abides in us?
Maybe all of the above .
Christ used to read scripture in the Synagogues and turned over the money lenders tables because he said that it's the house of God.The Bible does not mention that Jesus entered the holy of holies. The Pharisees were the problem. The synagogues were holy places but not their priests. Perhaps our churches are holy but are our priests? That's not the point , the point is that wherever Jesus visited he allowed miracles to happen. Most or all of Christ's miracles were gone outside a synagogue. Christ's church had very little to do with the holy of holies and more to do saving sinners. I believe that our duty as Christians is firstly to do as Christ did and forgive outside the church, help outside the church and once you have gone good deeds then attend church. Do you think fasting is so important then become a vegan, it simply won't save you. Do you think church is so important then fast pray and go to church but be aware of that God will not approve unless you have forgiven or helped your fellow man. I do agree Church is the house of God but you are the house of the Holy Spirit. Unfortunately priests have emphasised that you cannot take communion unless you have fasted , and a non orthodox person cannot take orthodox communion. Ok perhaps I have confused you. The simple truth is that when you live in Christ the whole world is your church because the Holy Spirit abides in you and you should worship and partake in the Holy sacraments.

There's Ekklesia (the People of God) in English called the Church. There's buildings called kyriakon, which are houses of the Lord. Also church in English. That's where people get confused.
The reason why people who aren't Orthodox cannot partake of the Holy Eucharist is because they might not believe and they are not prepared. It is to protect them. This has always been done since the first century.
Fasting before the Holy Eucharist is always important. We do not mix other foods with that which is Christ in our stomachs. That is also why we partake of blessed prosfora and in Slavic tradition wine after, to make sure we get all of Christ and the first thing we ingest after Christ to be blessed by Him.
You don't understand our Faith. Please get to know the ancient Faith of Christ before making judgments clouded by Western Christian theology.

The early Methodist teaching on perfection also called Entire Sanctification, the Second Blessing, perfect love, and other terms is the same as the Eastern teaching on perfection, also called by various terms such as theosis, apatheia, dispassion etc.
Wesley said: where Christian perfection is not strongly and explicitly preached there is seldom any remarkable blessing from God and consequently little addition to the Methodist Society and little life in the members of it. Till you press the believers to expect full salvation you must not look for any revival.
Wesleyan Christian Perfection is a domesticated (brought down to the common believer) and democratized (available to the the common believer) version of the more ancient doctrine of theosis. There are many written testimonies of early methodists who experienced theosis or entire sanctification as one of the more common ways that it was called, and the parallels with early Christian literature such as the desert fathers, pseudo-Macarius, Gregory Nyssa etc. are striking.
The first tract Wesley wrote on Christian Perfection is called: The Character of a Methodist. It is based on Clement of Alexandria's description of the perfect Christian (the true Gnostic) in book 7 of Stromateis.
