    I can see that the HISTORY of a Bonsai tree is almost the most important thing about it; certainly give it a source of value and curiosity. Thank you for sharing. I dug up a small maple seedling from the ground where I work, with the intention of turning it into a Bonsai (my first ever) and growing it for my entire life. I will pass it on to someone who deeply desires to care for it, or sell it to someone who I believe will care for it when I can no longer. It will be a legacy of me. The tree is in it's third year of growth.

      When transplanting a young tree, sink a rock in the bottom half of the pot with it. Position the roofs around the rock and then fill with soil. Allow the tree to grow for a few years and than transplant it with the rocks and roots exposed.

    A very interesting tree . In that grouping of , Trident Maples on that red sandstone , and if I recall correctly you said there were " 7 " , three of which have died , but that you've decided to keep them in place because you like their roots . Yes I agree , their form and structure most definitely add to the planting . But as soon as you said that , I thought : " How about Gining some of it " ? NOTE -- Not sure I've spelled that correctly . I've been working with Bonsai since 1972 , I only have a couple of trees , but nothing like the ones you have , Bonsai can be a very expensive art , esp. when you price the tools . I've saved some money , and I'd love to get some proper Bonsai tools for once . I also live in south West Florida , and you don't find trees like the Trident Maple , or other trees like those which are often used in the Art of Bonsai . Do you think they , the Trident Maples would survive our climate ? You've had a great opportunity working for Heron's . I was about 22 years old when I started with Bonsai , but at 69 I don't have a lot of space or money to do much with the art today , so I watch people like you , and wonder could I do something like that . Jack

      You are not too old buddy - I am 79 and still at it. Tridents will grow well in Florida. I have seen some nice ones in Louisiana - so Florida would be OK. BTW - I founded and started Herons Bonsai from scratch (See my video about Bonsai pots - I relate how I started in bonsai) It is my third career. I was a Professional Electrical Engineer for ten years, then a senior Govt official in the UK Govt and finally started my own bonsai business 33. years ago.

    I have a dozen maples that I picked from under an adult tree, they are growing like crazy and already moved them to gallon containers, think I will start looking for a nice rock, wonder how old they were when they were joined, might have to be 5+ years to have anything to work with I suppose.

    Your videos are really calming and educational and I always get very invested, even though that kind of approach to nature - almost complete control over it - differs significantly from my own. Bonsais are beautiful but also so incredibly sad...

    • @peterchan3100
      @peterchan3100 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why 'Sad'?

    • @nataliakozie6045
      @nataliakozie6045 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@peterchan3100 Well, in normal conditions, most of them would grow to be this huge, wild, amazing trees and as bonsais they're unable to do that. They're kept in small pots, shaped and restrained from ever growing to their full potential. It's kind of sad to me.
