I really enjoyed this video on Midnight Bisou and her Curlin colt. Interesting that her next breeding is Tapit.

Thank you! Mama and son are a stunning pair. Too bad you can’t do a family portrait since Dad is there too.

These top race mares seldom produce stakes winning offspring.

I heard a breeder talking and he said that the mares that can beat the boys have extra testosterone . That extra testosterone helps them win but also hinders them as broodmares.

      Actually, no. You can't.
You can dream and hope for the best but that's as far as it goes.
Furthermore, the likelihood of her producing a graded stakes winner let alone a champion is very low. The fillies and mares who were so dominant on the track aren't anywhere near as successful as broodmares. Lady's Secret, Zenyatta, Rachel Alexandra, Havre de Grace, Rags to Riches, Beholder, Songbird... I highly doubt that Midnight Bisou's ovaries are any more special than the great gals' before her.

    • @marysueeasteregg
      @marysueeasteregg ปีที่แล้ว

@@daniellelee1997 I agree one can't tell by looking at a foal (or even an older horse) if they are going to excel on the track. Good conformation is promising, but no guarantee of success. A lot of the high-priced yearlings bought by highly experienced horsemen flop on the track.
And in general, you're right, the best racing mares do not excel as broodmares.
But there are exceptions. Some of the great racing mares became great producers. Personal Ensign, Miesque, Urban Sea*, Mumtaz Mahal, were outstanding runners who are also blue hen mares. I'm sure there are others.
It's unfair to list Beholder and Songbird as flops, with their first foals having been born in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Beholder does have a graded stakes (G3) winner, Teena Ella. Songbird's first two foals have done nothing. Both mares have time to produce something of major note.
And it's unfair to include Rachel Alexandra. Her ovaries/genetics/fertility didn't fail: she got off to a terrific start as a broodmare. Her first foal, Jess's Dream by Curlin, was a winner in his only start, but injury led to an early retirement. Her second and only other foal, Rachel's Valentina, was a G1 winner (Spinaway), who was 2nd in two other G1 races, the BC Juvenile Fillies and the Ashland. Rachel's Valentina was Eclipse Award nominated at 2, and would have had a very good shot at being champion 2-yr-old filly if she had not been in the same crop as Songbird. But (as I assume you know) Rachel Alexandra's colon was injured foaling Rachel's Valentina; the mare was very lucky to survive, and her owners wisely pulled her from the breeding shed permanently. But her start there suggested she might have become a blue hen.
      * For those unfamilar with *Urban Sea* (23: 8-3-3): winner of 7 stakes including the 1993 Arc deTriomphe; she was European champion older mare that year. She was even better as a broodmare, one of the most influential broodmares of modern times. Of her 11 named foals, 9 started, 8 were winners. Her second foal was Galileo, a multiple Group 1 winner and one of the greatest sires of all time. Urban Sea additionally produced Sea the Stars, a European all-time great, and an important stallion himself. Her son Black Sam Bellamy and daughter My Typhoon were also both Group I winners. Her four daughters all became stakes-producing broodmares themselves. Urban Sea died in 2009 as a complication of foaling.

Watch at 1:57 where the handler is trying to influence the foal to ‘face’ its dam rather than to let it alone to look where it wants to?

After she delivers her Tapit foal this coming spring, I'd like to see her go to Into Mischief next. After all, it seems like they're breeding her to the best of the best sires. Why not keep the theme going?

Oh, so wonderful!! Love her....and the foal is handsome! I met Tapit a few years ago...he turned his butt to me as I gazed into his stall...that's OK...I was there to see Birdstone! (Now at Old Friends)

Very sad she was sold and exported to Japan. I haven't seen her Tapit foal nor can I find her listed on the new owners roster of broadmares.

It's STUPID using a stud chain on a worn out old broodmare standing in the paddock that looks like she doesn't have the energy to swat a fly. PLEASE USE STUD CHAINS WHEN APPROPRIATE. Not all horses need them. Hill N Dale needs to do better than this.

I agree with your general point, but "worn out old broodmare"? Midnight Bisou was foaled in 2015, she was 7 years old in this footage. She raced through age 5, this was her first foal.
