Once you see Saving Private Ryan, movies like Hacksaw Ridge, 1917 and other modern war films pale in comparison (I don't really see Inglourious Basterds as a pure war movie).
Everyone focuses on the twist of him being a patient, but I'm always more interested in the final twist, that he does remember and is choosing this fate. Feels much more shocking and meaningful to me.
I've watched this movie for the 2nd time yesterday, and I actually haven't realised this 1st time watching. Was pretty shocked when realised that he actually does remember everything..
@@parvildrobu You know how much i've watched this show? probably almost the 20th time now. It just crazy.. i never liked to watching the same thing over and over but this movie.. it just an exception
Awesome reaction man, loved that even though you started to figure it out the end was still mind-blowing. Definitely one of the best 3rd acts out there! I remember when I first watched this I felt sick seeing the scene with his wife play out at the end, just like how you said you wish it was a dream.
100% man..it was such a gut punching reveal and I wish it all were a dream. The undertones of mental health was beautifully executed in this film. Happy to always see ya Brandon! Once I’m back home I’m going to boot up your Pans Labyrinth video.
Also notice how the "real-life" scenes all have the same noir-ish color pattern, while the scene where she had killed their kids, along with his incomplete memories of it, are very colorful. It makes it alot more disturbing imo. The unsettling violin music is also perfect.
Seeing this movie a second time is a brand new experience. You notice clues, dialogue, and mannerisms that you didn’t notice before. Just like the beginning when he’s sea sick for example, his fear of water, cause his kids drowned in water. Or when the patient drinks water, the glass is not visible, cause from Andrews perspective he blocked it out.
I really like looking at the doctors reaction when interviewing the patients because you can see he's nervous about what they will say or if they will play their roles right.
yeah, this film and The Shining are the only two movies that, after I was done watching it for the first time, I immediately started it again and watched the entire movie over again.
The way he looks at Rufflo after his "Die as a good man" line. It's a tiny glance but you can see in that moment he was saying goodbye to the Doctor and he knew exactly what he was doing pretending to have regressed once more. Incredible moment. The "he is a patient" twist is easier to spot but that last bit threw me.
I'm pretty sure that Scorsese intentionally made that opening CGI boat scene look slightly fake on purpose to start the audience off with a huge clue that they are about to enter a fake reality. Think about it, a director of his aesthetic nature would normally prefer to shoot that boat scene on sight and not just use a CGI shortcut. There were also multiple water scenes later on that were real. And the other shots that used CGI like the surrealist ones didn't look fake like the opening shot did even though they were far more intricate.
To those that usually ask "How haven't you watched this movie?" get this: I love movies, some old and some new, yet I still have to watch The Godfather, Scarface and another one I can't remember that according to my friend is a huge one. It happens.
Exactly, thanks for understanding haha. It’s like someone saying “hey how have you not met Joe?” Meanwhile there’s billions of people who I haven’t met. Lol I just try to see the bright side of it and just being happy I’m able to witness it and share the experience with everyone!
It's a real mind-bender! This goddamn movie never fails to make me cry in the lake scene. As you say yourself in the commentary, what makes it so heartwrenching is how real it is. How stripped it is from any illusion or symbolism that might mitigate the blow of the reality of coming home and finding your wife has drowned your kids. There isn't even any music, only the sound of the water sloshing around as Leo desperately tries to get to his kids, his pleading voice and then his wails. Really masterful movie! I'm glad you liked it! n_n
I love how this movie does the twist without giving you any spoken clues, just the way the characters act and the filmmaking makes you start questioning things.
Exactly, and I honestly think that’s why I caught on quicker than usual. Reading the language of film I could tell something was “off” but didn’t know why!
@@JamesVSCinema I'm still not sure about the whole thing. Some part of me believes that they are F-ing with him. Using his real trauma in the past and the drugs the lady in the cave told him about. From they beginning they are 'programming' him. The doctor played by Ben Kingsley even says at some point "But Marschall, we have been talking" ...everytime they speak his is dominantly/persuasively trying to convince him of something. Not subtle at all, as you would think if he was trying to help him.... And the german doctor reference again: the USA actually let Nazi scientists do all sorts of things when they went to the US after the second world war. Lots of experiments were used. There is SO much in this movie that makes me think they are completely manipulating the Leo character. And the most crazy thing is, if I am right......almost everyone who watches the movie and believes what the doctors are saying before they lobotomize him...is also fooled. Tricked. Played. Into believing whatever the director etc wanted you to think. Amazing piece of art. I might never know what to really believe.
Thanks for the awesome opportunity to re-experience this movie as if I saw it for the first time again but through your eyes. Loved to see your response throughout.
A fun little extra: go back and watch Mark Ruffalo's expressions and reactions when they're interviewing the patient who murdered her husband with an axe. Especially when she mentions that the other doctor is "easy on the eyes" and "a good doctor." Brilliantly subtle. Also, there's a split second when she's drinking her glass of water, where the glass of water suddenly disappears for a second - symbolizing how Leo's character still fears and avoids water (because of the drowning), and how his perception of reality is unreliable, even during seemingly normal moments.
God i love this movie. Its so underrated. It has a bunch of great actors, amazing director, great plot, and an amazing twist. Its fun to rewatch it and pick up on smaller stuff you missed.
"Which is worse, to live as a monster or to die as a good man?" is a quote that has stuck out to me more than most movies! This movie is always good to re-watch! Fingers crossed you'll have Leo on your channel in the coming years brother haha I have hope!
Scorsese has some underrated gems like Shutter Island, Bringing out the Dead and After Hours. But After Hours is probably my fav out of that underrated trio
absolutely love all 3 of these, but i’m gonna have to agree with you. After Hours has a feel that seems it can’t be replicated, it’s almost surreal in a David Lynch way, it feels fantastical but it also feels grounded in reality, such a great movie, with very interesting side characters. Bringing out the dead is also great, Nic Cage at his best imo, love how unconventional it is for a horror/thriller film.
I’m almost positive that, since Mahler was world famous by then, as well as from Germany, the nazis used him as an example of “superior aryan music”. And some camps played Mahler over the new arrivals area to add confusion as well as making people demoralized because they understood the concept of the “aryan orchestra”.
I believe all the Nazi references are made with a serious 'greater' purpose. There's some real weird shit hidden beneath the surface in this piece of art. Operation Paperclip/MK Ultra type of shit. Really really interesting how they use it in this story.
I honestly love the fact that you haven't watched a lot of these movies that are film classics, it's like recommending a movie to a friend and watching his reactions, it's great! I hope you're channel grows bigger and keep up the great work!
This movie messed with my mind so much when I saw it in theaters. You picked up so much from just a first viewing! It was impressive. This movie is awesome, but The Aviator will always be my favorite Scorsese/DiCaprio pairing. That movie is epic.
I reviewed this too and this movie is amazing I don’t know how people slept on this film because when I first saw it I was obsessed ! This was a lot of inspiration for my first self published book. From the music to the psychological games that were played were just pure genius and pure talent in the acting !
James VS Cinema ..Leo’s performance is so much better the second viewing , when you already know the twist. Just like prisoners, you did a great job at picking up on the clues your first time watching ...my mind was absolutely blown the fist time I saw the ending... Leo is the GOAT!
I love the scene where leo interviews the lady patient. She asks for a glass of water. She grabs an cup on the table. Next shot she drinks from it but there is no cup. Foreshadowing again that all this is in Leo’s head. Great reaction once again you noticed so many clues and hints. I remember when it came out people were walking out of the theatre because it felt like a cheap detective thriller 😂 they should’ve stayed. please react to “I saw the devil” if you haven’t seen it. Beautiful but sometime you just cannot watch it is so gruesome. The color pallette is amazing.
love this movie. it’s very haunting, and it’s kinda like another movie watching it a second time knowing the truth about it all. i found it a little bit predictable and knew he was probably a patient and just felt the vibe of a big twist at about halfway through. also the scene where they’re interrogating the patient and she “takes a sip” of water and she’s not holding anything just told me immediately something was up. even though i found it predictable, it’s still one of my favorite movies. writing, directing, cinematography, all of it. and i really enjoyed your insight on it, so i’m subscribing. if you haven’t watched either donnie darko or perks of being a wallflower, you should react to them on the channel. they’re both very good
Speaking of "Showing it through all his surrealistic paintings of his mind". The scene were his wife dissolves into ashes is heavily influenced by Gustav Klimt´s The Kiss. I Love how directors make such connections and this is one of my favorite crossovers. Keep up the great movie commentary - crazy how you picked up the twist so soon.
That’s awesome thank you for sharing that Vivian! Yeah I was honestly shocked too. I was scared to jumped to conclusion too fast but thankfully I went with my gut!
I never noticed the thing with the lighthouse's staircase, now that I see it I don't know how I missed it! Love DiCaprio in this one, his character arc is great and that ending with that final line? Oof, poetic cinema *chef's kiss*
One of my all time favorites Dicaprio performances. The scene where he's holding his kids. That shit hit hard. Great video once again bro. You actually picked up on alot of things fast haa... As you should.
From a film making perspective, my favorite part of this movie is definitely the camera angles. So many low, shallow, and static shots that seem to hold for either just a little too long, or just not long enough. It really ramps up the suspension and feelings of unease.
I remember being mindfucked by this movie, first of all how goddamn beautiful it is, the integrity of it all, the soundtrack, the photography, the acting. How confusing it was, you felt crazy just as Leo's character was. The two part plot twist. This movie is one of my favorites ever, this movie has a lot of clues and for the people who loves to dissect films, this is the bomb
Love this film, loved the reaction. Its so fun to see someone analyse a film as you watch it. Its something I like to do.and always get told to shh on haha
Best direction i have ever seen! ;) Plus also a very important film, i think, in terms of teaching ppl about mental illnesses and criminal behaviour that ppl shouldn't dismiss, especially when it could be someone you know rlly well.
I would imagine you've seen Inception by now. For two movies that came out in the same year (2010) starring Leonardo DiCaprio, he plays characters with strikingly similar stories to a large extent. And he happens to be very good in both films, playing someone dealing with deep trauma.
I love how both films tackle trauma but this film definitely took it another level! But yes Leo’s character in both have some damn close similarities haha
Thanks for your insights on this. When I first saw the movie upon its initial release, a lot of its aspects escaped me. Now I wanna watch it all over again. Subscribed!
The scene in the metal open staircase is also about Andrew, when the other guy talks about the H bomb and tells how it first implodes .. before it explodes. That happened, first Dachau, then the children and third him killing his wife, then the killing in school and the three bar guys, he first implodes and as time went on he became an H bomb of violence.
Fantastic movie! :) I also love the way they use the music. I'm a film/video game composer myself and love to analyse how they use the music and what kind of impact it has. This film used mainly existing music like for instance Giacinto Scelsi, who's music inspires me a lot. Amazing atmospheric works! And they use it wonderfully in this film.
@@bazookatooth I think people were expecting something completely different from what this was because of the Scorsese/Leo pairing. They did movies like The Departed and The Aviator before this so to do a psychological thriller that borders on a horror movie at points with such unsettling subject matter was probably jarring for some people.
I just want to say you are such a joy to watch! It's great to see someone who really appreciates the beauty of film making and good storytelling. I always look forward to your videos!👌🌟🔥This film is one that I had to watch twice to get everything I missed. I'm glad you understood the ending on the first view, a lot of people seem to miss or not understand that. You should read the book it's based on. This is the second video of yours I've watched. It's extremely rare I subscribe to reaction channels, in fact I think I'm only subscribed to 1, but I'm definitely subscribing to yours. I look forward to more insights and interpretations.
I enjoyed your insightful observations on Shutter Island. One of the greatest "mindfuck" films I've seen. Phenomenal performance by Leonardo DiCaprio. That last line gave me chills. I hope you do get the chance to work with an actor of DiCaprio's caliber.
Can I just say, I can’t wait to see your future films. I’m not sure where you are in your film making career but I have a feeling it will be a long, fulfilling, and very successful one
I’ve made a few shorts on my website/Instagram in order to craft an artistic style! Now it just comes down to slowly building a narrative around it, but I’m soooo excited because I can FEEL myself getting better!
I’m really glad you watched this one of my favorite movie I watched this movie not that long time ago and I had the exact same reaction when the truth was revealed and watching again was even greater experience loved your reaction too!
I think DiCaprio has been under-rated as an actor. I first saw him in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" and did not realize he really wasn't afflicted with whatever the character was. It's the subtle things actors do that make for great performances. And Mark Ruffalo is another actor who can turn a seemingly insignificant role into something much bigger than the sum of it's parts. Jake Gyllenhall is another actor along these lines. You should look into his movie "Donnie Darko". I think you would enjoy it. Also, "Moon" with Sam Rockwell, directed by Duncan Jones, David Bowie's son. Thanks for your reactions, keep it up.
Awesome reaction, thank you. I noticed a change in the way you verbally expressed your reactions, which addressed something on which I commented in an earlier post and has made a massive personal difference for me, so if you took note of that comment and have done this consciously to respect that, I am really grateful. Either way, l am looking forward to watching all your future videos.
I noticed my man! Thanks for commenting. I may slip here and there but I am doing my best to make sure these videos are enjoyable for all viewers. Much love!
@@JamesVSCinema Slipping here and there is of no concern - the fact that you're willing to do your best to accommodate someone else's religious beliefs is all that matters. Thank you bro and I truly wish you all the best - I work in the film industry a little bit myself and so finding a reactor who can give the kind of feedback that feeds my soul on a creative level is a true treasure. Can't wait for you to make an impact on the world as a filmmaker yourself.
Now go back and rewatch it a second time with the info you know, and every scene feels so different from the first watch. You can see the fear in the staff and people around him because they all know he's a patient. Really changes you perspective on every scene and every conversation. I liked the first viewing but loved it the second time!
Glad you watch this movie I want to go to film school hopefully one day I absolutely love film and I want to make movies and television shows that people would want to watch. I’ve been Passionate about film since I was eight years old best of luck to you
This movie is based on a novel by Dennis Lehane so all credit for the intriguing story should go to him. It is also important to note that at the end of the book the reader is left to decide if he was actually a patient or a detective, the conclusion is more open ended, I can see how it would be difficult for a film to achieve the same though. I highly recommend reading the book even after seeing the movie.
Hi man! Great choice. Loved the book by Dennis Lehane(yeah it's a book, it's a page turner), he's a great writer.(Gone baby Gone is underrated as hell, keep this title in mind) I think I saw almost all Scorsese movies, and they are always a lesson in cinema. This is a great thriller, made excellent by the cast and director. Leo is so great with little acting choices as well. I think "Mean streets" should be on Your radar as well, especially to see what Scorsese could do at the beginning of his journey. 5K looking good man!
this movie still leaves you with that "what if they're actually lying though?" I've always had a inkling that they're lying especially with what he says at the very end.
@@JamesVSCinema just watched the whole video and really enjoyed it. I keep looking at my blu-ray collection to recomment you movies to watch but there are just to many good ones. Anyway looking forward to wednesday to watch you reaction of 1917. That camera work is mind blowing.

I remember when it came out people were walking out of the theatre because it felt like a cheap detective thriller 😂 they should’ve stayed. please react to “I saw the devil” if you haven’t seen it. Beautiful but sometime you just cannot watch it is so gruesome. The color pallette is amazing.
I can’t believe people would think that especially with all the talent in this film haha! Thank you for the love!
love this movie. it’s very haunting, and it’s kinda like another movie watching it a second time knowing the truth about it all. i found it a little bit predictable and knew he was probably a patient and just felt the vibe of a big twist at about halfway through. also the scene where they’re interrogating the patient and she “takes a sip” of water and she’s not holding anything just told me immediately something was up. even though i found it predictable, it’s still one of my favorite movies. writing, directing, cinematography, all of it. and i really enjoyed your insight on it, so i’m subscribing. if you haven’t watched either donnie darko or perks of being a wallflower, you should react to them on the channel. they’re both very good
Speaking of "Showing it through all his surrealistic paintings of his mind".
The acting is so good to play a character who is playing someone else underneath. So Good! Great reaction, James!
Thank you Jose!! Hope you’re having an awesome day my friend!
From a film making perspective, my favorite part of this movie is definitely the camera angles.
So many low, shallow, and static shots that seem to hold for either just a little too long, or just not long enough. It really ramps up the suspension and feelings of unease.
Truly one of the best films about trauma and repression. really great film to rewatch too because of all the neat little details!
Hahaha thankfully I’m the only one watching otherwise I’d be shushed too haha
Best direction i have ever seen! ;) Plus also a very important film, i think, in terms of teaching ppl about mental illnesses and criminal behaviour that ppl shouldn't dismiss, especially when it could be someone you know rlly well.
This is one of my favorite movie! I’m so surprised you haven’t seen it yet! Great reaction my friend. 🙏🏼
Subscribed!
That’s what I love to hear Eric! This really made my day reading this, thanks so much. Glad to have you in the community my friend!
The music that you recognized hearing before is also used in Arrival.
Ahhhh you’re right!
On the Nature of Daylight by Max Richter.
Yesssss i suggested this movie the other day and I’m so happy that you reacted to it
I love this channel so much
That’s awesome to hear! Glad to start the day off for you my friend!
That’s awesome to hear Siddhartha! Music plays an insanely huge role in any art form, I 100% agree!
A lot of people ragged on this when it came out, and I'm not really sure why, I thought it was great. My first reactions were very close to yours
Really!? That’s weird that they did that. Happy to hear it’s getting some love!
People ragged on this?? Wow this is a masterpiece they’re tripping .
@@Taquina-x7m from what I remember, a lot of snobbery from the more pretentious of film fans 🤷♂️ I don't get it
Superlative ohhh okay . Wow I see that’s a bummer
I love these type of films where you have to pay attention to figure things out...I got some Alfred Hitchcock vibes from this movie.
Wow thank you for the awesome comment Olivia this really made my day!! 🙏🏽♥️
@@JamesVSCinema 😀🙌❤
5k subscribers. Holy moly! Future James is looking back and laughing.
He got it so fast wtf... I was so shocked in the end when it was clear what was happening.... And he got it so fast from the start damnn
Yo, James! Literally just came across your channel! Fellow filmmaker here as well! Love your commentaries! Definitely gonna check out your Patreon soon! Much love!
Ayo Zach my brotha! Shoot me a message on Instagram would love to support a fellow filmmaker as well! Join the patreon whenever you’re comfortable brotha!! Welcome to the community!
Leo is very underrated as an actor.... How many give him the credit he deserves.... BLOOD DIAMOND is another good film
One of my favorite movies ever. haha that was my reaction the first time I watched it "my mind was fried"
Right!? That ending was mindblowing. I was like damn, how does one think of this!?
watching it a second time makes it even better. You see how everything that was creepy or suspicious makes total sense.
Definitely saw it again while editing haha 👌🏽
I enjoyed your insightful observations on Shutter Island. One of the greatest "mindfuck" films I've seen. Phenomenal performance by Leonardo DiCaprio. That last line gave me chills.
I hope you do get the chance to work with an actor of DiCaprio's caliber.
I appreciate that man!!
Yesss I love this movie, especially Mark Ruffalo’s performance
Yes!! His character was so interesting to me hahaha. I knew something was up just because of his performance
This, in my opinion, is one of the very, *very* few movies that has a perfect ending. Great movie, great reaction!
Agreed! That ending was incredible!
Screenplay by Dennis Lahane (Gone Baby Gone, Mystic River...). I don't think anyone does it better.
the guy in 19:00 is buffalo Bill from the silence of the lambs
Hahaha much love brother! Yeah, he’s a master at the craft and it shows. Thank you for rocking with me from the beginning my man!
this movie still leaves you with that "what if they're actually lying though?" I've always had a inkling that they're lying especially with what he says at the very end.
James how have you not seen this movie? Hahaha I'm just glad I can watch you see it for the first time. Such a great film
Yeah I just never got around to seeing it! Sort of happy I didn’t though because now I’m able to share it with you guys! I loved this film!
@@JamesVSCinema I'm happy you haven't watched it for the same reason. Thanks for sharing it!
@@JamesVSCinema just watched the whole video and really enjoyed it. I keep looking at my blu-ray collection to recomment you movies to watch but there are just to many good ones. Anyway looking forward to wednesday to watch you reaction of 1917. That camera work is mind blowing.
Excellent reaction thanks and hats off to the author who wrote this fascinating story , I thought it was a Christopher Nolan movie but Scorsese wow fantastic work!
Agreed! And happy to have experienced this with you guys!
Have you seen "Memento"? Thats imho the best twist... Well it is not a twist but it takes you right up until the end to really understand!
That’ll be in a future poll for sure my man!
James VS Cinema YASSSSS! I really like your channel.
Im glad you havent seen these great movies because now we get to see your reactions and thats pretty cool.
Me too!! Back in the day I remember it being difficult to even go to the theaters so I missed a lot of awesome movies. Happy to share the experience now with everyone!
Big support here from Singapore bro!
Ah I love Singapore!! Always wanted to go! Much love!
Another one of my fav movies, you’re killing it man. And 1917 on Wednesday! Crazy. 1917 is my 4th fav film🙌
Ayyyy!! Yes I’m excited for you guys to see and hear what I had to say about both films!
It may not be a popular suggestion but Tron Legacy is so good and yet so damn underrated, the surrealism and cgi in it is beyond amazing!
Have you seen The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? think you might dig it based on your comments on this film
I believe I have! With Jim Carrey right? I loved that film!
@@JamesVSCinema Yeah! Andy Kaufman is one of the greats!
Off edit of his wife, she died and quick shot of the water, and it all looks orchestrated. Damn you got it he movie figured in first two minutes lol even if you don't know at the moment and I just noticed the music sounds like a Nolan movie
That was a good reference to Hitchcock's Vertigo, I had the similar thought while watching this movie.
Anyways, love your reactions man!!!
Glad to hear my friend!! Reminded me so much of that film!
One of my favourite leonardo dicaorio performances. Great movie👍
Brilliant performances all around the board!
My film friends hate my “I haven’t seen it yet” list LOL in reality it’s hard to get around to every good movie honestly. There’s so many. You literally have to make time
Exactly! Lmaooo hey, Ay the end of the day it’ll happen for a reason. No need to rush the experience! ;)
The Drop with tom hardy. Great movie based off short story from the same writer of the book shutter island.
now i hope to see you react to The Cure for Wellness
I noticed you’ve been enjoying Daredevil so far. You should watch Mr. Robot because they’re both set in New York and have a lot of parallels. You won’t be disappointed if you’re into cinematography.
Watching this mviie a second time is like "owaH'
aye my guy back at it with another great reaction! loving these videos man. Have you ever seen Apocalypto? great movie with some beautiful shots. would love to hear your thoughts on it. keep up the great content bro!
Appreciate you man!! And I haven’t!
Scorcese (sp?) is a huge Hitchcock fan, so I imagine the Vertigo connection is intentional.
Do you know who Max von Sydow is? The one DeCaprio stuck a needle in. 63 years ago he was in 2 movies the same year, that are both surreal and made by Ingmar Bergman. Probably need subtitles for Wild Strawberries, and The Seventh Seal... some movies need to be watched more than twice haha...
This movie was great, I rarely watch it the subject of mental illness is scary, how your reality could be skewed.
I can totally understand that. It’s a very raw story about mental illness!
IN 20 YEARS OR SO CRITICS WILL PRAISE THIS FILM AS MUCH AS GOODFELLAS OR THE IRISHMAN..I THINK PEOPLE THOUGHT IT WAS THROWAWAY BUT I THINK SCORSESE WANTED TO EXPERIMENT AND TO HAVE LEO,MICHELLE WILLIAMS,BEN KINGSLEY,MAX VON SYDOW,,,YOU GO MARTY...LOVE YOUR VIDS JAMES.I AM 63 AND HAVE BEEN A FILM FAN FOR OVER 50 YEARS,SO COOL TO SEE YOUNG PEOPLE LOVING MOVIES...
That’s so awesome KENT! Much love my brother!
You got to do a reaction to Martin Scorsese' "Bringing Out The Dead", excellent film.!!!
The trailer for the Tenet movie came out long ago, but you didn't shoot the video. I'm very curious about your reaction
The Green Mile , Schindler's List and The Shawshank Redemption
,
Maybe one day. ;)
M3rC1.
I believe I’ve seen those!
This movie is fantastic, so underrated. Leonardo DiCaprio & Martin Scorsese don't miss.
If you want visual storytelling, PT Anderson's magnolia
Definitely adding this one next poll!
Magnolia a hard watch, but great
I had read the book first. Dennis Lehane has done lots of stuff that became movies.
"9 MONTHS" WOW :BIRTH/REGRESSION
