    Thanks for another great video. I’d love to see a winter tour of your garden! Seeing the “skeleton” without leaves makes it easier to visualize the future for those of us who are just starting out :)

    Hazels are amazing! We have a hundred or so in the ground, and another few hundred being grown out in the tree nursery ready for planting out next year. They'll be a significant component of the shelter belt understory plantings. The plan is to dry the nuts in bulk, then coarsely chop the nuts, shells and all, to supplement the chicken feed in winter. The coppice wood will be a welcome bonus of course, and will be the perfect fuel for the mass heater.

      I put about 400 in the ground (American filbert, a native species here in Kentucky USA). We got a whole lot of little bitty nuts from them this year. Ours grow to little bush size, and make a wonderful understory layer to the Chinese chestnuts we put in with them.

    Last year I planted 2 hazel nut shrubs for the squirrels. I'm allergic to them 🌰 but I love to attract 🐿🐿 in my garden. In America you have many of those big squirrels. Here we have only a few of the small red ones 🐿 and they are under protection. We're always happy to see them.

    My youngest son always buy hazel nuts during the Christmas time. He also tried to grow apple tree from seeds every time he ate the apple. Finally I have a apple tree. Seeing this video I think I will grow hazel nut trees. Gloomy day in the winter month I am sure this plant will bring some lights to look out. Also I like that it could be a shrub. Thank you for the great video.

      How old is your hazel? Curious because I planted my first hazel this past fall. I see buds and I am excited to see it grow.

    Omg the allergies! 🤧
    But! I love hazelnuts, and here in europe, standard in most gardens and municipal green zones too! I think portland is famous for its hazels, yes? We call the flower “katjes” which means “little kittens” 🤷🏽‍♀️😂
    I love how long hazelnuts keep (in their skins, do not open them if you want to keep them long term).

    I saw one of these while driving the other day. I thought, Damn! Look at the catkins on that tree! What the hell is that??? It was definitely a hazel. So serendipitous you made this video! I love the winter interest of this plant.

    You might be interested in the blue dwarf tanoak that I just started germinating. They're a 4ft tall ish bush that produces decent sized acorns and it's native to our area :). I think it'll be pretty useful in the landscape because I don't have room for a giant nut tree either.

    I've watched your hazel videos before, but I'm back because I just acquired a free Mcdonald Hazelnut yesterday! A local nursery was clearing out their old stock. I'm deciding where to plant it...thinking about at my fenceline like you have yours to get some summer privacy. Just wondering how wide is the bed you have yours planted in and how far from the fence is it planted?
    I'm off to watch your video about coppicing your hazel next :)

    • @ParkrosePermaculture
      @ParkrosePermaculture  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      since a squirrel planted it, it is WAY too close to the fence. It makes it difficult to prune the backside of it and branches end up touching the fence.
      The stool of the coppice itself is about 2 ftx 2.5 ft.

    • @LauraStepney
      @LauraStepney ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! That's really helpful information. It did look a bit close. If you were planting it yourself, how far away from the fence would you choose?@@ParkrosePermaculture

    most older cities don't bury the electric lines. I grew up in a suburb of Toronto - some buried lines, but teen/adult in city - not buried. I think burying is for newer developments? It seems at least in Ontario where I live, they are only buried in either suburban areas or brand new developments in small towns. Older parts of small towns also don't bury. I am excited to get my hazel this year!

      Very useful for living hedges, wattle fencing, and bows

    • @kitdubhran2968
      @kitdubhran2968 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hazel nuts, narrow stakes, thinner poles for wattle or fencing, even thinner to be used for weaving, firewood, kindling.
      The young suckers out of the stool of a coppiced hazel come in super super straight and grow relatively quickly.
      If you’re in the right environment you can just stick the cuttings in the ground and they’ll sprout, so you can use them for a living fence, or as an actual historical English style hedge row (one of my plans).
      Honestly I’m sure there’s more, but I can’t think of any. Just got off work. Brain melted.

      Hazel wood and shoots can be used in making baskets, building trellis, in thatched roofs, and hurdles, the movable livestock fences type.

    Do you have two of them from different varieties to have hazelnuts?

  • @harriettejensen479
    @harriettejensen479 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I enjoy planting trees from seed. The reason I haven't already planted a hazel is because I read that you have to have two varieties for nuts. Is that true? If so, do you or a close neighbor have a hazel of a 2nd variety? I'm pretty sure that none of my neighbors have any. They are more likely to be cutting down a tree than planting one.

    • @ingeleonora-denouden6222
      @ingeleonora-denouden6222 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If that is the case, then maybe all hazels growing here (in the entire region) are of the same variety (just wild hazels) and then that's the reason why they don't produce well ...

    • @permiebird937
      @permiebird937 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hazel's need 2 to produce nuts. If you don't have room for two trees, plant one in a shady location near by and coppice that one tree to a shrub. Very small hazel's will produce flowers if they are established, and that can pollenate the larger tree. Hazel's grow well from nuts.

      If you have a lot of space, filberts grow well interplanted with chestnut trees, and both can be managed for coppice, pollard, hedgerow, timber, or nut/fruit production.

    • @jameskniskern2261
      @jameskniskern2261 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@permiebird937 Absolutely! I added black locust in the mix I have for a nitrogen fixer, and coppice the black locust to keep them from shading out the rest. Black locust makes amazing firewood and rot resistant wood items. It's hard, however, so good sharp tools are essential to work with it.

  • @ingeleonora-denouden6222
    @ingeleonora-denouden6222 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know why ... hazels grow very well here, but they do not produce many nuts. Even when a tree produces some nuts, the nuts are very small. As far as I can see from your videos the climate here is much like in Portland. Maybe even more cloudy here. Do hazelnuts need more sun?

    • @rexmayhugh6027
      @rexmayhugh6027 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is probably the variety. We have well over 100 acres of hazelnuts. We have about 10 different kinds. Some have very large nuts and others are quite small.
