I started playing electric in the 1970s and the question was basically the same. I kinda went the Les Paul path and no regrets really but after about 50yrs I recently got my first Strat and I like it! Had a Tele already and it's great but they are not the same. Won't be abandoning LPs but glad to have a Strat now.
Stratocaster all day! It's more versatile, way easier to modify, and way easier to fix if something goes wrong, like a broken headstock. It's also easier to fly with since you can take the neck off and put it in a carry-on...Les Paul is pretty, though, and sounds awesome.
It only sounds awesome with gain, for just one type of music otherwise it sounds dead. If you're just starting out then definitely the Les paul.you don't know when you're out of tune, no matter if you just gonna play Kiss. If you wanna be a musician, the strat. I'm working on recognizing the notes and learning music by ear, but then have to learn how to write music.
A lot more work goes into building a Les Paul. That’s where most of the price difference comes from. Removing price from the equation!(two guitars just sitting there and you get pick one), I’d probably - 9 times out of 10 - grab the Les Paul.
I have a Strat because a) it is so comfortable to play, it feels like butter in my hands and fits against my body so nicely (this is a polite way of alluding to the support issue you mention 🤣) b) David Gilmour is my favorite guitarist and c) money, but do I really want a les paul also? of course I do 😅 Guitar Acquisition Syndrome is real 😓
I think the Strat is much more versatile. You can you get many different sounds out of it. And as a beginner, it’s much more affordable and not as chunky than a Les Paul. You can get a really good Strat for under $500..whereas a solid Les Paul is well over $1,000.
I totally agree with your assessment. I think the majority of the differences are subjective to one's personal taste, except price of course. They both have great and different sounds, depending on what you like to play determines which guitar would be better. I personally like the 25 1/2 scale length better, that's what I started with so it feels more at home to me. Bottom line, get one of each. You can't go wrong with that! And hopefully I will never have to choose a guitar based on if it supports my titties!!
This is by far the best comparison video on an HSS vs Gibson I’ve seen, ever! I have Fenders and I’ve been looking at a Gibson for a new guitar so I’ve been looking for a while. The Fender HSS all day!!! Killer Video! 🤘
I've played on n off since 1978. I was a friend of Eddie Van Halen. I used Primarily Strats, however, I believe the Les Paul is slightly better because it sounds thicker to me and has more punch. I also believe without the tremolo bar it forces you to improve by improvising more to get the sounds you can get with the strat and the tremolo bar. I feel a guitarist should buy both and learn on both. By playing both you will become a better overall player even though you may prefer 1 over the over. The Gibson Les Paul has a Scale length of 24.75" this makes life easier on the hands and on bends too, fuller sound, that's better to me overall. It's hard to really choose but you have to lean one way or the other regardless if you have both.
My first decent guitar was a Fender Telecaster. My next was a Les Paul. I have a Donner strat style guitar that is an H-S-S configuration. They each have advantages depending upon the style of music your playing. Great video by the way.
What's crazy is I just bought my second guitar, which is the exact same strat you have in the same finish. The craziest part, my first guitar is a cherry sunburst Les Paul. I'm glad you like them both. I agree the Les Paul win in looks and warm sound. Like you said though, not all songs need that warmth and there is plenty of need for a Fender. I'm hoping it plays a bit easier than my Les Paul. Of course, I'll be keeping both! Thanks for the video.
i had a Schecter Blackjack ATX Solo 6 which is a Les Paul style single cut for 13 years. this year I sold it and got a custom Kiesel Delos, which is their strat-style and it's not even close which one i prefer. after 13 years i realized i don't like single cuts or humbucker clean tones. the Kiesel is an H-S-S configuration because while i definitely prefer humbuckers for high gain tones, i totally prefer single coils for clean/dirty tones. an H-S-S s-style guitar is the best of both worlds, IMO.
Love your video, and your honest opinion! I have a Strat, a Jazzmaster, and a Gibson Les Paul! I play nothing but rhythm now with a group, and I prefer. My Les Paul, with the shorter faster neck, and that great smooth humbucker sound! For lead I always preferd the Stratocaster. Just my thoughts, no offens please!🌹🥰🎵🎶🎸🌴🌅🏖️🦩🦩
Actually the CORRECT answer is Telecaster. ;) Kidding of course, but it's what ever works best for the music you're going to play, but a Telecaster works in a lot of genres including Jazz.
I have both. My Les Paul Custom is fun to play at times when in I'm the mood. My Stratocaster wants to take me on a new journey every time I pick it up. I also have S-1 switching besides the tremolo on my Stratocaster. Tones are endless.
The problem is that all of these are my guitar heroes! I like Les Paul sound better though. I want to get my first electric guitar. Which one should I get, the Strat MIM or the Epiphone Les Paul which is similar to Gibson?
Both sound fantastic. Nothing wrong with having one of each. To me personally im les paul guy neck feels better in my hands. i have a 2014 traditional 120th anniversary edition. Love it.

Dear Mango - have you tried low cost one such as Jet, Harley Benton, Amazon stock ot aliexpress stock? I've seen Briam May guitars going for retail price but ....
Verytough choice for me if I had to just pick one. The Gibsons play easier for me, and I love the humbucker Krunch, but you can't get the Strat neck pickup sound on a Les Paul. The Strat fretboard radius handles less well for me, but I love the sound of that neck PU. I remain undecided.
It's funny hearing someone talk about all the issues they've had with expensive guitars. I'll stick with my Squiers. If i do have an issue like electrical or maybe it needs a better nut, at least I didn't fork out $2,000! I have an Affinity that is one of the most reliable guitars I've ever had. Oh yeah and i do agree with you about the difference between a Strat and a Les Paul. It just comes down to preference really. For me, it's the Strat for its versatility, sound and looks. But I do enjoy listening to Slash on a Gibson. Telecasters look like something made with left over parts, like they were patched together. Lol, maybe one day I'll check um out But I doubt I'll ever get over their looks.
Well said. I do have a Gibson Les Paul Custom and an American Special Stratocaster. But, Squier/Affinity guitars really offer one of the best bangs for the buck. I know a young guy that bought a candy apple red squire at a garage sale for 50.00. Almost perfect condition, stays in tune and gives you all the Strat tone and feel you would need. It was just as much fun to play as any other.
Took me a long time to realize neither are better than the other. They both have their roles and we’re responsible for some of the best guitar playing we’ve ever heard. They’re both equally good. Just depends on your taste in guitars. Get both if you can and throw a tele in there too.
As someone who doesn't play guitar, I'd have to pick the Stratocaster. All I ever hear about the Les Paul is that it's heavy. To me, the only way the Les Paul wins is aesthetically, and that's only because I personally don't like cutaways. Of course, it's a matter of opinion. Everyone should enjoy either or both! Thanks for your wise words! Long live Ukraine!
I have own and allways til this very day use both 3 fenderstrats and 6 les pauls gibsons and 3 hollowbodies,4 telecasters and superstrats like i have 8Ibanez Jackson dKm soloist 8 of them i can play any guitar including the bulky acustic guitars which i dont own any bc they are too bulky. I love electric over acustic any day of the week.
Ergonomically the Strat is far superior but the Les Paul just feels like a “guitar” when you hold it, beefy, and the neck is amazing, the shorter scale, rock solid feel of the fixed bridge makes me want to play more straight ahead on the beat, pushing forward, whereas I just want to float around on a strat, it’s like playing up in the clouds and hanging out. Yes the Les Paul is super expensive but it’s perfect out of the box, whereas the Strats are always a project where every little thing will eventually be swapped out or modded or upgraded so eventually it will add up. I love them both but for different reasons.
@@Juno58 Just picked up a new one not too long ago and it's absolutely gorgeous. Flawless finish, frets were perfect and nut and saddles were cut correctly, considering how simple a guitar they are there are very few points of error possible outside of user error. Assuming you're not a moron and can properly set up a guitar as you should with any instrument, yes, they are amazing guitars.
I used to play a Strat-like guitar and it sure is more comfortable to play because of all the smooth round edges on it. I now switched to an SG. I agree that it’s a bit less comfortable but I also feel more confident playing it as it is chunkier. The Strat did support the titties better as you said it tho🤣
Easy your fruit name ... MANGO ?? ... could be in my spanish like ROBBERY... I miss don't know play guitar... change for few spanish lessons ... keep trying harder ... love you from Spain, from Carlos 😘
Neither .. RG & PRS! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Btw I consider strats ugly (tele even more) but this dark night is one of few I like .. it's very nice color finish. But it's freaking expensive :/
HI, I JUST FOUND YOUR VIDEO HERE AND YOU FOR THE FIRST TIME AND WATCHED THE ENTIRE VIDEO AND EVENTHOUGH THIS IS A 70 YR OLD DEBATE, I WANTED TO GIVE MY VIEWS... ULTIMATELY IT IS ALL ABOUT WHAT THE INDIVIDUAL FEELS AND LIKES. BUT! THERE ARE SERIOUS AND IMPORTANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO, MANY YOU DID MENTION, BUT YOU WERENT PRECISE.. I HAVE BEEN PLAYING GUITAR FOR OVER 20YRS NOW, AND HAVE GONE THROUGH MY OWN STRUGGLES OF GOING BACK AND FOURTH BETWEEN THESE GUITARS. THIS IS WHAT I HAVE LEARNED, AND HOW I FEEL ABOUT IT. THE STRAT IS LIGHTER, MORE BALANCED, WHICH DOES MAKE IT MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE TO PLAY, BUT PLAYING IS ALL ABOUT EXPRESSING YOURSELF AND WE ALL HAVE TO BE AS COMFORTABLE AS POSSIBLE TO BEST EXPRESS OURSELVES. THE STRAT IS MADE OF ALDER WOOD FOR THE BODY, MAPLE WOOD FOR THE NECK, AND EITHER A MAPLE FRETBOARD OR ROSEWOOD FRETBOARD. ALL THOSE WOODS ( EXCEPT THE ROSEWOOD ) ARE PUNCHY, CLEAR, ARTICULATE AND VERY DEFINED WOODS. SO THIS MEANS, ALL THE NOTES YOU PLAY WITH IT? ARE GOING TO BE VERY CLEAR, TIGHT, AND PRESENT, DEFINED, AND SHARP! WHICH I PERSONALLY LIKE, BECAUSE I WANT MY GUITAR TO SING VOCALLY. ( IM AN INSTRUMENTAL GUITARIST ) IN INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC THE LEAD GUITAR IS THE VOICE TELLING THE STORY. SO CLARITY IS A MUST! YOU CAN USE DIFFERENT SIZE STRINGS AND PICK UPS, AND OF COURSE THE AMP YOU CHOOSE TO USE, AND THE SPEAKERS IN YOUR CABINET TO REALLY FIND YOUR EXACT SOUND, AND THAT TAKES A LOT OF TIME! BUT YOU CAN SHAPE YOUR SOUND WITH ALL OF THOSE THINGS MUCH BETTER THAN WITH A LES PAUL.. THE LES PAUL IS COOL TO LOOK AT, BUT! ITS WAY TOO HEAVY, AND ITS REALLY IMBALANCED! WHICH MAKES IT VERY UNCOMFORTABLE TO PLAY. SITTING OR STANDING. THE WOODS ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TOO, AND THAT IS WHY YOU HEAR THE BIG DIFFERENCE IN TONES FROM EACH GUITAR. ITS THE WOODS. LES PAULS ARE MADE WITH MAHOGANY BODIES, MOSTLY WITH A MAPLE TOP. MAHOGANY SET THROUGH NECK, ( THE STRAT IS BOLT ON NECK ) THE DIFFERENCE IN THAT IS SUSTAIN. THE LES PAUL HAS MORE NATURAL SUSTAIN BECAUSE THE NECK IS FUSED INTO THE BODY. SO THE ENERGY OF SOUND IS CONSTANTLY FLOWING. WHERE AS WITH THE STRAT, THERE IS A LITTLE BREAK IN THE FLOW OF ENERGY, BECAUSE THE NECK IS A SEPARATE PIECE OF WOOD CONNECTING TO THE BODY. ITS HARDLY NOTICEABLE BY MOST PEOPLE. BUT ITS THERE. YOU CAN USE ACTIVE PICK UPS ON THE STRAT OR A DEALY PEDAL, AND GET DAYS OF SUSTAIN TOO THOUGH. THE FRETBOARD WOODS ON THE LES PAUL ARE MOSTLY EITHER, ROSEWOOD, WHICH IS TYPICAL, BUT IT CAN BE EBONY TOO, WHICH IS A TIGHTER, PUNCHIER, CLEARER WOOD. BUT AGAIN, BECAUSE THE NECK IS MAHOGANY, AND THE BODY IS MAHOGANY, AND THE FRETBOARD ROSEWOOD WHICH IS ALSO A BASSY SOUNDING WOOD, JUST LIKE THE MAHOGANY WOOD. ITS MUDDY, BASSY, FUZZIE, AND TO ME, VERY "SPONGIE" SOUNDING.. I DONT LIKE IT. I HAVE A FEW THEM OVER THE YEARS, AND REGARDLESS OF THE PICK UPS OR OTHER GEAR I USED TO TRY TO MAKE IT MORE CLEAR SOUNDING? IT WAS ALWAYS SPONGIE, BASSY, MUDDY, FUZZY, AND I NEVER LIKED THAT.. AND IT WAS ALWAYS UNCOMFORTABLE TO ME. THE GIBSON SG I HAD ONCE, WAS A LOT MORE COMFORTABLE, ALMOST LIKE A STRAT. BUT! I STILL WAS MID RANGEY AND MUDDY, AND I COULDNT GET PAST THE HORNS ON THE BODY. I DIDNT LIKE THE LOOK OF IT. AND, I ALWAYS ENDED UP GOING BACK TO A STRAT! SO I BUILT MY OWN CUSTOM SUPER STRAT. AND THAT IS MY GUITAR.. I HAVE HUMBUCKERS FOR A BIG PUNCHY TIGHT AND CLEAR SOUND, BUT I ALSO HAVE A PUSH PULL POT ON THE TONE KNOB, TO MAKE THE HUMBUCKERS SINGLE COILS WHICH IS REALLY COOL. I HAVE THE NECK SCREWS REALLY TIGHT TO HELP WITH BETTER SUSTAIN, BUT I USE A DELAY PEDAL AND HAVE GREAT SUSTAIN. I USE STAINLESS STEEL FRETS SO THEY WILL NEVER WEAR DOWN! I USE A BASIC SEMI LOCKING SET OF TUNERS, AND, IM VERY COMFORTABLE, AND VERY HAPPY.. THE BOTTOM LINE HERE FOR EVERYONE? IS, ITS NOT ABOUT WHAT THESE GUITARS LOOK LIKE WHEN YOU HOLD THEM IN THE MIRROR! I THINK THE LES PAUL LOOKS MUCH COOLER THAN STRAT, BUT! THE STRAT FOR ME IS "HOME".. AND THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING HERE FOR EVERYONE.. THEY HAVE TO GO TO A MUSIC STORE, KEEP AN OPEN MIND, AND TRY OUT DIFFERENT TYPES OF GUITARS, UNTIL THEY CAN CLOSE THEIR EYES, WHILE HOLDING IT AND PLAYING IT? AND JUST KNOW "THAT IS THE ONE"! THEN YOU WILL KNOW.. AND ITS LIKE THAT WITH ALMOST EVERYTHING ELSE IN LIFE TOO! ESPECIALLY OUR SOULMATE! SO MANY PEOPLE ARE WITH THE WRONG PEOPLE FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS. CARING FOR SOMEONE, OR BEING REALLY ATTRACTED TO SOMEONE DOES NOT MAKE THEM THE RIGHT PERSON FOR YOU TO BE WITH! THERE HAS TO BE COMPATIBILITY! NATURAL COMPATIBILITY BECAUSE YOU CANT MAKE SOMEONE BE THE WAY YOU WANT THEM TO BE.. THEY HAVE TO BE THEMSELVES, YOU HAVE TO BE YOURSELF, AND IF ITS RIGHT? IT WILL JUST FLOW, WITHOUT MUCH OR ANY EFFORT FROM EITHER OF YOU.. YOU WILL KNOW YOU LIKE EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM, AND THEY WILL FEEL THE SAME FOR YOU.. THEN, THEN! THE SEX IS MIND BLOWING! WHEN YOU REALLY CONNECT WITH SOMEONE FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS, AND YOU CAN BE FRIENDS? AND FEEL LIKE FAMILY TOGETHER, AND THERE IS NO LYING, OR PRETENDING, OR TRYING, JUST NATURAL CONNECTING AND WANTING TO BE WITH EACH OTHER???? ( BEFORE YOU HAVE SEX AND MAKE LOVE WITH EACH OTHER ) THEN EVERYTHING ELSE BETWEEN THE TWO OF YOU WILL ONLY BE BETTER! BECAUSE ITS RIGHT! AND ITS RIGHT FOR BOTH OF YOU.. NOT JUST ONE OF YOU! THERE IS TOO MUCH OF THAT GOING ON.. AND IT NEVER LASTS! YOURE JUST USING EACH OTHER, OR ONE IS JUST USING THE OTHER. AND WHO REALLY WANTS THAT???? ( WELL, ALL THE SELFISH ASSHOLES REALLY WANT THAT ) BUT THAT IS WHY EVERYONE HAS TO BE AWARE OF THOSE PEOPLE AND STAY AWAY FROM THEM! IF EVERYONE FOCUSED ON THE REAL IMPORTANT THINGS FIRST? INSTEAD OF HAVING SEX RIGHT AWAY BEFORE YOU EVEN KNOW THE OTHER PERSON!??? THEN YOU CAN FIND OUT WHAT THEY ARE REALLY ABOUT.. MOST OF THE TIME.. BUT THERE ARE GOOD ACTORS OUT THERE.. SO, YOU HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION TO EVERYTHING THE OTHER PERSON SAYS AND HOW THEY ACT, AND SOONER OR LATER THEY PROVE THEMSELVES EITHER TRUE OR FALSE! SO WHAT DO WE DO UNTIL WE KNOW WE FOUND THE RIGHT PERSON TO HAVE A RELATIONSHIP? AND WE ARE HORNY ALL THE TIME??? : / WELL, THE ANSWER TO THAT IS VERY SIMPLE! VERY SAFE, VERY SMART, AND VERY NECESSARY! AND THAT IS... MASTERBATION! DONT HAVE SEX WITH ANYONE.. MASTERBATE AND THAT IS HOW YOU KEEP YOURSELF FROM MAKING A BAD MISTAKE BY HAVING SEX WITH SOMEONE YOU DONT REALLY KNOW! AND, HOW YOU GET THE RELIEF YOU NEED SEXUALLY, MENTALLY, AND EMOTIONALLY! WITHOUT GETTING USED, SICK, PREGNANT, ABUSED, LIED TO, OR MIS TREATED...... OK.. WENT OFF COURSE HERE A LITTLE, BUT ITS KINDA RELEVANT BECAUSE THESE ARE BOTH VERY VERY PERSONAL THINGS FOR US! ( IF YOU ARE SERIOUS MUSICIAN ) OK.. THAT IS ALL I WANTED TO SAY..
The people who come in and listen to les paul music, they don't have money. You don't wanna play anything for people who drive an old beater because they will pay you one penny no more than that you wanna play for people who drive Mercedes Benz, they have money by the tons and you can become wealthy. The rich people don't listen to les Paul music or if they do, they will hide that.
After years of asking myself "Les Paul or Strat?" I finally realized that the right answer is "Yes"
Nice video! Personally, I like Strats and Les Pauls equally, but for very different reasons. I don't think I could pick one over the other.
I love that blue color on the Strat, always been one of my favorites.
I started playing electric in the 1970s and the question was basically the same. Strat with a humbucker in the bridge position!
That dark night finish of the strat looks awesome! 👍👍👍
A lot more work goes into building a Les Paul. That’s where most of the price difference comes from.
Removing price from the equation!(two guitars just sitting there and you get pick one), I’d probably - 9 times out of 10 - grab the Les Paul.
I loved the video! In some aspects like tone aesthetic I prefer LesPaul modes, but in others I prefer the Strat
Totally different sounds both great but I prefer Les Paul!
The better question (imo) is es-335 vs telecaster
They are both awesome.
Nope
My dilemma is: having a tele, a strat and a jag (among many other) do I need a mustang? Oh, that already mentioned Guitar Aquisition Syndrome.
The dark night color on the Strat is great.
That's why I also have both. I bought Stratocaster comfortable practice but if I could only have one Les Paul.
I think the Strat is much more versatile. You can you get many different sounds out of it. And as a beginner, it’s much more affordable and not as chunky than a Les Paul. You can get a really good Strat for under $500..whereas a solid Les Paul is well over $1,000.
Yeah, Strats are definitelty more versatile. Especially an HSS configuration like this one.
Get an epiphone instead of a les paul lol much more affordable. Single coils imo are just too thin
@@fawder1014electric guitar is played on single coil, not humbuckers, humbuckers are for playing Kiss music.
Humbuckers are an add on.

How do Epiphones and Squiers compare in terms of build quality? They are both budget brands under Gibson and Fender respectively, but are they equals?

The strat wins handsdown. More so in your case, with my favorite colour of all time, the dark night!

Both, horses for courses, I own both plus a Flying V and a Tele.
Non are 'better'....just different
Haha, such a great question! I’ll say both are great and there needn’t be only one! Kinda must have guitars in my opinion.
The Les Paul is most assuredly softer and smoother where the strat has more of an attack.... Chunky, if you will 😂

Strat ! Gibson makes high priced defects ,Ive lesrned my lesson ,The way I see it Gibson owes me2 times !
The Telecaster!
Telecaster 100%
neither... give me a telecaster.
Strat.
Can u do fuel by Metallica on shorts?
The LP sounds sweeter and more bluesy, both great guitars though.
Ferra da guitarra!
Strat
Gibson Les Paul for me, no offense please!❤😊😊😊😊
I don’t choose, why should I? I have both.
Easy your fruit name ... MANGO ?? ... could be in my spanish like ROBBERY... I miss don't know play guitar... change for few spanish lessons ... keep trying harder ... love you from Spain, from Carlos 😘
Sou do Brasil 🇧🇷 amei seu canal se voce ainda não fez fassa por favor🙏 Zz Top - rough boy. 🇧🇷
Neither .. RG & PRS! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Btw I consider strats ugly (tele even more) but this dark night is one of few I like .. it's very nice color finish.
But it's freaking expensive :/
Tele cause its can do both guitars but neather guitar can sound like a Tele
"Very comfortable on a hole"
I love both but if I have to choose it would be les paul
I'd go with the Strat. That Les Paul looks kinda ugly and clunky.
Adoro ver ela toquando
the winner is of course the Telecaster!
Who is your ultimate guitar hero?🙂
For me, Les Paul blows the strat away
simferopol rossia
She's kinda fine tho and she plays guitar👌✨
For me, the les Paul is over priced, over weight and over fragile. They sound great but those 3 negatives have always prevented my from trying one.

The people who come in and listen to les paul music, they don't have money.
You don't wanna play anything for people who drive an old beater because they will pay you one penny no more than that
you wanna play for people who drive Mercedes Benz, they have money by the tons and you can become wealthy.
The rich people don't listen to les Paul music or if they do, they will hide that.
i prefer telecaster
What is your accent?
Talentosa de mais
This world has to many Bills and to many Pauls we would be better off with Less Pauls.
