Sunday lunchtime, and practically the entire nation was glued to this - even straight-laced Christian friends of ours. We laughed until our sides ached. How did they get away with it? Well, they never actually said anything rude; it was all in the minds of the listeners!
Listened to RtH as a kid. It made me choke with laughter then, still does 50 years later. The best radio comedy without a doubt, even better than The Goons
I didn't discover Round the Horne until a few years ago, but the Julian and Sandy bit quickly became my favorite. I admire the courage of performers at a time when homosexuality was a jailable offense. It's not just that they were openly gay -- their use of Polari gives fleeting glimpses of a hidden culture and asserts its legitimacy. As Sandy would say, "Oooh, bold."
They were being CAMP. as in theatrical characters. Not satirising homosexuals . Homosexual men and women were known in society They were only arrested for prostitution as were heterosexuals . It wasn't as bad as the Social Historians would have you think. :-)
This had me in stitches. I used to listen as a kid, but I had no idea what any of it was about. I had forgotten how surreal the whole thing was, great series.
Superb! Kenneth Horne is such a brilliant straight man, but when he comes out with a gag he's fantastic. Love this show. Gosh I was only 3 when this finished broadcasting. I forever thank my old friend who got me into it. A glass raised to Barry Took and Marty Feldman for wonderful writing.
Round the Horne is really the best ever comedy series. Thanks to a woman called Irene at my company in London in the late 90s (Chugai), I came across this series and have never looked back. Thanks, Irene.
Always written by Barry Took, he started as a music hall comic and met many Julian's & Sandy's travelling around the UK.. I'm currently reading his biography - A Point Of View - for the umpteenth time
Many years ago of a Sunday, while my lallie of lamb was in the oven I used to troll round to the Black Cap in Camden Town and quite often I would varda Hugh Paddick in there. He wouldn't be trolling around cruising for trade but he would simply be vardaing the drag: usually Mrs Shufflewick and Marc Fleming, all on his tod.
Oooh 'ello Mr 'orne. - I still wait for it and it still gets me everytime - just hilarious even after all these years. Thanks for upload - nice combination with yer bona bicycle.
This is genius. Poetry,. "Nante riah! Nante anthyting!" ... Hugh Paddick and Kenneth Williams are utterly pitch-perfect and throw in absolute filth alongside Shakespeare with effortlessness. Brilliant brilliant brilliant. "Spencer's Fairy Queen". Excellent. Barry Took and Marty Feldman knew how to push it just far enough. "Never listen to gossip, ducky".
Sandy and Jules magic comedy I am very totally Hetro but still found them magic soo funny but loved Round The Horn and all the other wonderful comedy of the 1950' - 700's
Oooh innee bold? :-) happy hours-and at the time i first listened to these live on the radio, I had no idea of the double entendre. Still funny though.
"Never listen to gossip, duckie", "Much ado about nante", "All's bona that ends bona" . . . is that the last 2 years described in a globule ? Just imagine what Took and Feldman would make of today's "Social scene", they'd probably be "Cancelled" after one episode and then tasered at home for good measure.
I think he says "Looe" as in the town in Cornwall. Kenneth Horne is going on holiday to Cornwall and wants something to read, hence the "Nothing worse than being in Looe with nothing to read" gag.
Just to let everyone know, Round the Horne is on BBC Radio 4 Extra (DAB) every Tuesday at 12pm and again at 7pm. Current classic comedy hour shows are Monday. Dads Army and As Time Goes By Tuesday. Round the Horne and Hello Cheeky Wednesday The Navy Lark and I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again Thursday. Steptoe & Son and The Marx Brothers Friday (my favourite!) Hancocks Half Hour and The Goon Show
A towering achievement. I would pay good coin to get the full original broadcasts without all the cuts…. The official release of rth is a little bit edity.
Nanti Hamsteads, nanti minces, nanti riah nanti everything! No teeth, no eyes, no hair no everything! As You Like It. Wm S & Julian & Sandy. Camp comic geniuses :)
Recognise that route well... Chelsea Bridge Road, past the Barracks to Sloane Square, turn left, pass John Lewis and on to Kings Road. Saw Hugh Paddick once crossing the road there.
I'm really surprised that the Polari worked for general listeners back in the day. Ok, there's only a dozen or so words that you need to learn, but how would an average straight person have known any of them? Today, even many gay people wouldn't. Still, it was quite funny and a great period piece.
what year was the footage filmed - there are phones4u shops so it can't be that long ago - why are the streets so empty?? Mind you we have become accustomed to London being overrun these days so even ten years ago it was wonderful compared to the dump it is now
grai Yeah I thought it was footage from the 60s or 70s till I noticed the shops. It reminds me of visiting London as a child, it seems like an anthill now.
As the Safe Cycling Champion of Burnley for three consecutive years in the 1960s, I reflect on the fact that I would not have won that title if I rode like that.
Great audio. Not so impressed with the video! Too close to the kerb and parked cars, and if that camera's on your head you need to look back every few seconds.

Old Ma Whitehouse et al would have reached for the green ink if someone had translated ".... a marvel at the cottage upright..." for them.
Listened to RtH as a kid. It made me choke with laughter then, still does 50 years later. The best radio comedy without a doubt, even better than The Goons
Me too! It was so funny, even though I hadn’t a clue what they were on about.

Sat in the kitchen waiting for my Sunday lunch listening to this.........Happy happy days...........
Kenneth Williams' timing in this sketch is brilliant. "What can I do for you duckie" entered the mainstream very quickly.
Hilarious!
This had me in stitches. I used to listen as a kid, but I had no idea what any of it was about. I had forgotten how surreal the whole thing was, great series.

☝ one of the best 📻 radio comedys ever done my late dad used to listen to this x
Always written by Barry Took, he started as a music hall comic and met many Julian's & Sandy's travelling around the UK.. I'm currently reading his biography - A Point Of View - for the umpteenth time
Sad that they don't make shows like this anymore. They were brilliant

I obviously didn't understand this when I was a child but I loved my father 's reaction and remember him with tears of laughter listening to them

"Never listen to gossip, ducky".
Genius is not a strong enough word for this.
Thanks for putting this on! Loved the journey and Williams and Paddick as entertaining as ever they could be! X
Sandy and Jules
magic comedy
I am very totally Hetro but still found them magic soo funny
but loved Round The Horn and all the other wonderful comedy of the 1950' - 700's
Oooh innee bold? :-) happy hours-and at the time i first listened to these live on the radio, I had no idea of the double entendre. Still funny though.

"Poe's Raven"
"Is he?"
Classic!
I have no idea how they got away with some of the material in this show. Brilliant! Thanks for posting it.
"Never listen to gossip, duckie",
"Much ado about nante", "All's bona that ends bona" . . . is that the last 2 years described in a globule ?
Just imagine what Took and Feldman would make of today's "Social scene", they'd probably be "Cancelled" after one episode and then tasered at home for good measure.
"Nothing worse than being in the mood and have nothing to read." Very funny!

Miss working in London looking at this Video. Luv the show
they were always the highlight of the show!!!
Typically London in the 1960s. We will sort it. Kenneth W is a superb Polari speaker. There should be one in Parliament
There is actually a bookshop in Kraków in Poland, only just off the main square, called Bona.I don't think they 'd heard of Julian and Sandy.
Sunday's at two o'clock, if I remember rightly. Wonderful shows.
Priceless humour, nothing comparable these days.
Gosh memories. Hilarious even now!
Took me a while to realize they were on a bike. Crazy!
Have you ever heard " Around the Horne"? Great British radio tv series of the 60s!
Barbara Lake
No I haven't Bee. :-)
TH-cam!
Who comes remotely close to this genius today?
Overtaking on the left can be dangerous.
Paddick and Williams? Wonderful.
That vid was a great, hypnotic accompaniment to the audio. Some of the best bits of London there :)
Classic Round the Horne sketch - great video too
I remember another episode when Kenneth Horne said "so I made my way gingerly into the shop" and then "Go on Jules show him your testimonials"
I remember 10 year old me tuning into RtH occasionally. I never got tbe jokes. Now i know why.
Polari is fascinating to hear.
Ooooh...Fabulosa!!!!
Loved this
Genius, very clever & very funny!
Many many laughs on Rottnest Island with sister Sheila listening to RTH. Still the best comedy
Anyone notice the reference to John Gielgud they sneaked in - naughty!
John Ginggold was closely related to Steptoe, or his horse, not sure which.
wonderful
Often equaled, never surpassed.
Priceless.
Chelsea bridge up to Sloane Square for none Londoners ,that's how I remember it
That's' some damned impressive cycling. I hope you're wearing full kevlar body armour.
Ooooooh lovely and Bona.
l laugh so much I cry.
Starring the one and only Kenneth Williams.
After 60 years I still don’t understand but revel in it anyway
God bless the BBC.
A towering achievement. I would pay good coin to get the full original broadcasts without all the cuts…. The official release of rth is a little bit edity.
I was waiting for the cyclist to ride through red
Nanti Hamsteads, nanti minces, nanti riah nanti everything! No teeth, no eyes, no hair no everything! As You Like It. Wm S & Julian & Sandy. Camp comic geniuses :)

Amazing so funny.
Wow... there'd have been a riot in the U.S. Maybe even today...
Truly Bona.
love it !!
Ukeylad, Peter Lewis was part of the John Lewis Partnership last time I was there, so you were right despite yourself..
Poe's Raven...Is he? Never listen to gossip duckie.....:)
Oh aint they Bold! Fabulous comedy.
Some of the best bits of London.. I agree, cos the chap did not go near Croydon :-)
All innuendo but very funny
West Wimbledon's the best bit of London, SW20 in da house.
Bona :)
Chelsea Barracks knocked down
Have a varda !
What's up with the banner ads that can not be gotten rid of?
You can tell that video's old. The black cabs don't have identifiers in their windows. Prior to 2011
Ooooooooo! Bona basket...
I enjoyed that. Brings back memories. Sad to see what's happened to the Kings Road though.
Doesn't it bring back memories ,I recognised the road in the first 30 seconds
did anyone notice the scroll of names going up the screen showed Hugh Paddock instead of Paddick
yeah... I know.. I know.. I have realised that.
Soooooooooooo funny!!!! lolol
How dare you!!! (LOL)
I mean Petet Jones. Ahem. Bought a wax coat there. Undies. Umbrella.
'As They Like It'!
I stand corrected.
Like the man in the orthopaedic shoes?
Bold, bold, inne bold?
Recognise that route well... Chelsea Bridge Road, past the Barracks to Sloane Square, turn left, pass John Lewis and on to Kings Road. Saw Hugh Paddick once crossing the road there.

Londoners would get the drift. We got the drift of many street languages from Yiddiish to Cockney slang and Italian additions
what year was the footage filmed - there are phones4u shops so it can't be that long ago - why are the streets so empty?? Mind you we have become accustomed to London being overrun these days so even ten years ago it was wonderful compared to the dump it is now

+sweetnsourpuss I spotted a car with a 2007 number plate so after 2007 and probably on a sunday given the relatively light traffic
He'll paraphrhase - the seven ages of hommie :)

As the Safe Cycling Champion of Burnley for three consecutive years in the 1960s, I reflect on the fact that I would not have won that title if I rode like that.

How did they ever get away with it
People had a sense of humour, especially the Gay community.
