The sample was indeed adjusted to tempo, graininess was added for the lofi thing, and they did add drums and bass, but they still stole an 8 bar sample from a house song. Entirely uncredited. They didnt deserve to make any money off that, as the sample is continually playing through the whole song. Stop trying to justify it.
Idk why it's a big deal they really never made money off it, plus their songs are 100% free.

theres different levels of copy rights, re-use, reuse with modification, re-use but give credit, etc.

I get both sides. DM5 is upset they didn't clear the sample and then also didn't credit him, which it is his property, now him sending a C&D (in his rights to do) was sent over a 10-15 sec replay loop of his song, which they rapped over. Not the whole song. It looks bad to kind of stuff it under the rug, lots of artists do this. Now yes, $crim messed up, they did not clear it. DM5 could've reached out and done it a bit less like "no don't touch my stuff" and worked it out behind the scenes. However, afterwards, on this and other platforms $B handled it better than DM5.

In my opinion, I feel like what DeadMau5 did was sampling a woman singing and thats actually what Scrim did in his song so he took that specific part that in my head it's ok to use since it would enter into the use of creative commons, right?
I’m pretty sure that on the song that DeadMau5 made the lady was a featured singer and imo they were completely fine they changed enough up and with the fact that so many artists from all kinds of genres sample like that it’s shouldn’t have been a problem. The song was also on a free mixtape so they only made like two pennies off of it being here on TH-cam.
I believe they made a deal where deadmau gets 50% of whatever the boys make on the song

People need to know the difference between suing someone and politely asking them to remove the infringing material. It's not a bad thing to ask them to do that, in fact, it helps prevent any further action which is in itself a good thing.
