This was suppose to have the actual short in it and be an actual video but Disney of course kept striking it. So enjoy the pre show I guess and ending. New video Saturday!
I can’t wait to see more people discuss about how cruel Michael the Public Domain Rodent was to all the non-anthropomorphic animals in Steamboat Willy.
Exactly, while I understand everyone wants to get revenge on Disney for being a soulless corporation or make a quick buck by making all of these horror movies and games and vids of Mickey using a gun or other “mature” stuff, I feel like another, more mature and lasting approach would be to turn Steamboat Willie into a series. Get some very talented animators and writers to take the basis of the original cartoon and expand upon it with new one-off characters and plots, an episodic route where Mickey, Pete, Minnie (careful not to use all there names) and the animals of the steamboat visit a new location or taking a different passenger that leads to slapstick and comedy every episode. Occasionally an episode breaking the formula like the engine breaking down in the middle of nowhere or Minnie learning to become a crew member. Whether it be on TV or TH-cam, whatever works best. I just feel like that would be more effective in the long run, but artistically, financially and at showing off to Disney. But that’s just one opinion what do you guys think?
Unfortunately cheap horror movies made for shock value will be the first consequences we will see in the short term, but think of all the possibilities in the future. Mickey Mouse is now alongside Cinderella, Pinocchio, Sherlock Holmes, Dracula, Snow White, Frankenstein's monster, Puss in Boots and several others. Anyone (in countries where Mickey has entered under public domain) can make any movie, book or series featuring or starring Mickey Mouse they want just as long as they don't use Mickey as a company trademark and don't use substantial traits from later shorts and movies, like the wizard outfit from Fantasia.
This video reminded me of those Steamboat Willie plushies my Mom got me a while back, and when I turned around, there was black and white Minnie Mouse, face down on the floor
My nightmare when Mickey and Pooh in public domain is not what you think. What I think is that Public Domain says you can do “whatever you want” but I don’t want to see Classic Mickey and Pooh elsagates on my recommendations or I will get bleach.
Mickey 1.0 does indeed not talk, but, however, copyright laws only extend to "original, creative expression". This means that changes to preexisting characters are only protected if they are more than trivial and stock variations of what came before. One could theoretically argue that giving Mickey an intelligible voice in later shorts isn't original enough to be under Disney's copyright.

So that should answer your question ^^ (opinion A. Give me an actually nice response) or opinion 2 (be a complete dickhead) have a nice day.
Curiously enough, there is a poster from 1928 that does show Mickey with his trademark colors. However, since it's unknown if the poster was indeed made in 1928 or if its date was forged, I'd also advise to not use the red pants.
He did not in “Steamboat Willie”. Heck, Minnie and Pete didn’t necessarily do a whole lot of talking in the short either when it was released and if they did speak, it was mostly through grunting noises or laughter or something of the nature. The only character that fully talked in the short was the parrot that tormented Mickey after getting busted by Pete several times. Mickey didn’t fully get his vocal cords until around 1929 when Walt Disney himself provided the voice for him up until 1947.
Mickey doesn't speak clearly in neither of the shorts entering public domain; however, copyright laws state that changes made to preexisting content have to be creatively expressive, it is, the changes have to be more than merely trivial variations of what came before. So, in theory, one could argue that giving an anthropomorphic mouse a squeaky voice isn't a substantially original enough trait to be protected under copyright. Regardless, being on public domain means you can make your own spin on the character. You don't have to stick to the formula, just like adaptations of Dracula don't have to give him a mustache like in the original book. So you can give any color to Mickey, you just have to avoid giving him red pants in specific. The same applies to his voice. So while it may be safer to avoid giving him a squeaky voice, giving him a voice at all isn't copyright infrigement.
Disney fought tooth and nail to change copyright laws to keep their properties for as long as they have. Steamboat-era Mickey only just now got put into the public domain because not only did Disney get the existing copyright protection laws is the US extended, when that one got close to letting Steamboat Willie go, they got the laws changed AGAIN and delayed things this long. Trust me, no corporation even half as big and greedy as Disney would ever choose to let their cash-cows go public.
Okay cool so you use a public domain character because it’s fairsies but add music from a game who’s company is notorious for getting people for copyright infringement. Well done.
