She's in the military. I don't know. It's like saying that Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist isn't a tomboy, when she 100% is. I feel that people don't think about what defines a tomboy. A tomboy is a girl that enjoys or does things that are associated with boys. It doesn't mean that everything they do is boyish, it just means that a big part of what they do is boyish. And seeing what she does when fight (and the fact that she's out fighting in the first place) she's definitely a tomboy. She also does all that training. A tomboy can be a traditional motherly wife. But from what we see, she does what the boys do, therefore she is a tomboy.
I believe Mordred is one of the prime example of Tomboys… She's cute when not in battle She's cool in battle The most important is… *She do be rocking that short shorts*
Finally someone who understands that short hair alone doesnt make a girl a tomboy, there are so many factors to consider Ver insightful video also Morded is love, Mordred is life
I would say the cool/cute thing also depends on the show. Ritsu from K-On is undoubtedly supposed to be the tomboy of the group, but her design might not seem as "cool" as other tomboys, but that's because she's from a moe slice of life.
I myself am a tomboy I’ve always been a tomboy Mostly in personality and the way I act Because physically I am quite feminine and pateat But in terms of my personality and attitude and interest I am definitely a tomboy I was obsessed with cars as a kid I’m passionate about video games and animation As a kid I would run around outside and explore the forest in my backyard I would even climb trees I’m very spunky and sassy at times And yeah I am by default a tomboy There are some girly things I like Like painting my nails and I like my hair to be kinda long (not too long just about at the shoulder) Anyway yeah great video as always professor lando ^^
1:20 Professor I'll have to disagree, there are tomboys who do not have short hair. An excellent example would be Miruko from MHA, she's clearly a tomboy but she possesses long hair
@Jamal jamshaid Miruko may very well be the exception which confirms the rule. However I would say that, in order to define wether a girl is a tomboy or not, you would have to consider muscle mass percentage as the most important factor alongside attidude. Mathematically this would have to be written in the following way: M + A + Σef ≥ ξ Where M is the muscle mass percentage A is attidude, expressed in distance from the stereotypical woman towards the stereotypical man Σef is the sum of evironmental factors such as short hair, tan, way of dressing etc. And finally ξ is the Tomboy constant, a mathematical constant which defines the Universal nature of tomboys. I, as a mathematichan, am willing to find this constant thus ending any debate on the tomboyish nature of any girl.
@Jamal jamshaid You are correct, I should add some form of time-dependent variables in my equation, I still have a long journey before finding the true answer
3:10 I would argue, professor, that Cute and Cool are not part of one spectrum, rather two axes, part of one graph. Where one can have a lot of both, or neither.
Finally a video on this very important topic i think you have truely exceeded yourself professor, this research is truely game breaking and will lead many down a new path in life, thank you professor
The art of tomboyish is a balance between two sets of features: Cool-Cute, Hot-Sexy. Thank you so much for another unforgetabble class , Professor Lando. As a duse who loves both tomboys and femboys, your lectures are pure gold and inspiring.
Would you say Kallen from Code Geass and Revy from Black Lagoon are tomboys? Both are women working in a field that is dominated by men - for Kallen it's Mecha piloting, for Revy it's being a criminal. Now of course, they're not the ONLY girls in their respective departments but they are two of the most important: Kallen is the second-best Knightmare pilot behind Suzaku while Revy is among the most feared and deadliest individuals in her city. In addition both do possess a hot-headed, proud, no bullshit attitude and are quick to violence when provoked - Revy far more so than Kallen, though the latter has thrown hands on the regular. Furthermore, Kallen ticks the short hair box, hers stopping just above her shoulders similar to Mikasa. Revy on the other hand may have long hair but wouldn't be caught dead wearing a dress. And yeah, both are way hotter than they are sexy. Revy I am almost completely confident in classifying as a tomboy while Kallen I'm less confident in - she certainly possesses many of the traits but some Code Geass fans have argued otherwise in the past when I have posed the question.
Basically the idea associated with short hair are women secure with their feminine side. Kallen is definitely a tomboy due to her line of work and attitude. Revy is definitely a tomboy not only in attitude and work, but also in the cool and cute factor. In the manga it is mentioned Revy used to work in a BDSM brothel as both as a dominatrix and a submissive sex slave.
As a member of the Union of Tomboy Enthusiasts Refining Unisex Standards, I thank you for the informative lecture, giving light to what we're fighting for. Hopefully this would raise awareness enough to restore a monument very dear to us Tomboy Enthusiasts. The fabled Tomboy Mines in the Nevada Desert.
Tomboys > Femboys. I’d honestly clap a female that’s a bro, than a dude that’s a chick. edit: After much consideration, and self reflection. I’d honestly clap both if given the option. Tomboys = Femboys both have equal value.
I think she has qualities that would fool you into thinking she's a tomboy (Short hair, tan, good at fighting) but she isn't actually a tomboy. She doesn't really have any interests besides serving Griffith and she acts a little too feminine for me to consider her a tomboy.
Lando gets a lot of points right here but he doesn't separate real life tomboys and anime tomboys very well. Anime tomboys are a character archetype, but irl tomboys are just masculine women.
True tomboys can only be sexy on accident. A tomboy can be pretty, even beautiful, but not sexy on purpose because that would imply caring about high level feminine things which are against the very nature of being a tomboy. A tomboy could be doing yoga or just randomly stretch her body, and by accident awake emotions in those observing, but this can't be intentionally, because a defining trait of a tomboy is that they don't know they are hot, because in their minds only girly girls can be or be seen as attractive.
@@beththedarkmage3359 Hey man, i have a pan friend, want its number? It's great at cooking and is currently single, it's really great at cooking bread
Finally.... Been waiting for this forever, Thank you professor Lando for explaining this topic of interest. Now I can find me a certified tomboy thanks to you.
The problem is that the word means a lot of different things to different people. Personally I see it in the more traditional use of the word: someone who *acts* in a way associated with boys. Things like being into physical outdoor activities, using crude language, hanging out with boys, rejecting feminine fashion standards, etc. Being muscular or having short hair often goes with that, but it's in no way defining features to me. The term becomes even more vague in a context where gender roles are less strict. It wasn't long ago just speaking too loudly could make people call you a "tomboy"
I feel like I've always been a tomboy my whole life When I came into this world female, I was given feminine pink clothes and toys etc. I loved to steal my brothers shirts tho and I had lots of fun while doing so. I liked it more then the dresses. When I was six I never wore dresses or pink to school cuz I didn't wanna. In grade 1 when my best friend drew a picture of us, she drew me with a dress and I told her to erase the dress and put a shirt instead. Through my middle school years I hated how I looked and despised looking into the mirror. Now that I'm in high skool, I decided to try a new style. After convincing my mom to take me shopping for new clothes, I went to school with a completely new look. Chain necklace, a blue t shirt, my cap backwards, and cool sneakers. Was an awesome day Fast forward to the future, I cut my long hair that I've been growing for seven years. I've also tried out and gotten into many sport teams. I feel like me now, and having this tomboy glowup was what I needed. I don't care about the backlash from my family. My self esteem is higher, and when I walk through the halls I feel like a king walking down the run way.
Wonderful video! Just got a few things I have to disagree or add: 1. I would say Mikasa leans too heavily into the cool side to be in the golden tomboy middle. While watching the show, it was hard to see much of her cute aspects. 2. Also, the element that completes a tomboy, alongside short hair, (in my humble opinion) is tanned skin. The best looking tomboys are those with slightly darker skin
I agree that number 2 is amazing as tanned tomboys are prime. but i feel like that is looking more at just the sports tomboys which while a major category misses a lot of others. With the first point I do feel like mikasa has a lot more cool then cute but whenever she touches the scarf she is incredibly cute. This brings into question if it is the frequency of cuteness or the intensity that matters.
What we need to know is how to date tomboys. Also my fav tomboys are Strongarm from Transformers Robots in Disguise, Revy from Black Lagoon, Kefla, and Seras Victoria from Hellsing ultimate abridged
Professor, If the quality of being a tomboy is being cool and cute, then where does Shikimori from Shikimori's not just a cutie lie on your equilibrium model? And can she be defined as a tomboy? Sorry if this question has been asked before/not relevant to this class.
As a long time student I think I can answer this. Shikimori is indeed cute and cool but her cuteness is ever present while her coolness comes out in short bursts. She is far more cute than she is cool. Therefore she is not a tomboy. But she is also not a girly girl. Shikimori resides in the grey zone of simply being a cute but cool girl.
As a Tomboy fanatic since my adolescent years, there are two types. About half are indeed Lesbians....but the other half are straight and the most amazing, awesome mind-blowingly lovers you will ever have! You guys that are only into girly girls don't have clue what you're missing....
I have to disagree with the attribution of "tomboy" to Mikasa. I think size plays a large role in the identification of tomboys. Additionally I think that Mikasa has more of a "icy" strength instead of the "fiery" strength that embodies tomboys.
I think there should have been a segment on Tomboy vs Homegirl. They often overlap but give off different nuanced vibes. But if I were to differentiate them on one thing it'd be datebillity, you want to take a tomboy out on dates and do fun activities together, whilst with a homegirl you want to hang out or chill with them, usually a more relaxed vibe. I think the essence of each is that a homegirl is like one of the boys when in groups whilst a tomboy is often the bridge between boys and girls. The most prominent example of a homegirl would be Misty from Pokemon. Although she exhibits some aspects of a tomboy, she is much more often just a girl who hangs out with boys. I think homegirls lean towards feminine and tomboy towards masculine, yet their personalities make them fit into different roles under group dynamics. I still think Winrey is a tomboy though so that shocked me. I think the professor has forgotten some key aspects of her personality. She's not afraid to smack someone and put the fear of God in them. She's just left behind most of the time and thus fails to show more.
As a Commander in the TRA ( Tomboy Rebel Army ) I thank you for this educational video and may it help the Army grow more as we fight against The Girly Girl Nation. Tomboy Supremacy

I would watch this, but... Let's just say I'm going through some drama right now revolving around a close friend who you could consider a tomboy, and just watching that first part has me tearing up. I'll come back to this video in a couple weeks...
I was a tomboy I grew up around boys (my dad, my uncle, my brothers who were always around) til I was 21 when I started to pursue my husband. I also used to have short hair too because long hair was very bothersome

Also what's the deference between hot and sexy? I mean tomboys wouldn't be sexy? Like would flexing be sexy? I don't know what really got me into tomboys it's kinda hard for me to remember but I'd say Ryuko from Kill la Kill was probably part of it but my current tomboy I kinda simp for recently would be Ghislaine Dedoldia, I love her. Another fantastic lesson professor. I learned a lot that i think can help me in the future
If you paid any attention during class you would understand that life is quite the same as anime, it's proven by scientific fact.
More like anime is the same as life-
i don't understand why i like your videos but i find myself coming back every time
My personal test is if another character could casually refer to the person in question as "One of the BOOOOYS", then that's a tomboy
I agree with this method of assessment
Truly a goated theorem
Hard agree on that one
true
This is a revolutionary theory!
Finally someone who understands that short hair alone doesnt make a girl a tomboy, there are so many factors to consider
Ver insightful video
also
Morded is love, Mordred is life
There's also something about Lean Beef's smug yet flirtatious smile that I'd associate with the 'fit chick' image
I would say the cool/cute thing also depends on the show. Ritsu from K-On is undoubtedly supposed to be the tomboy of the group, but her design might not seem as "cool" as other tomboys, but that's because she's from a moe slice of life.
she aint rlly
I have been a lover of tomboys all my life, before I even knew what they are. They deserve more love!
I agree
I myself am a tomboy
I’ve always been a tomboy
Mostly in personality and the way I act
Because physically I am quite feminine and pateat
But in terms of my personality and attitude and interest I am definitely a tomboy
I was obsessed with cars as a kid I’m passionate about video games and animation
As a kid I would run around outside and explore the forest in my backyard
I would even climb trees
I’m very spunky and sassy at times
And yeah I am by default a tomboy
There are some girly things I like
Like painting my nails and I like my hair to be kinda long (not too long just about at the shoulder)
Anyway yeah great video as always professor lando ^^
I'm the same

Well I guess I won't find someone like this
1:20 Professor I'll have to disagree, there are tomboys who do not have short hair. An excellent example would be Miruko from MHA, she's clearly a tomboy but she possesses long hair
he said "probably" the main feature
she has short hair in the manga now
Short hair or ponytails are the baseline for Tomboy hairstyles.
@Jamal jamshaid Miruko may very well be the exception which confirms the rule. However I would say that, in order to define wether a girl is a tomboy or not, you would have to consider muscle mass percentage as the most important factor alongside attidude. Mathematically this would have to be written in the following way: M + A + Σef ≥ ξ
Where M is the muscle mass percentage
A is attidude, expressed in distance from the stereotypical woman towards the stereotypical man
Σef is the sum of evironmental factors such as short hair, tan, way of dressing etc.
Imagine being lectured by this professor then a few years later you find hin on TH-cam talking about tomboys.
Jesus Christ I love tomboys, I want somebody to motivate me to workout while teasing me but still being a loving partner.

The art of tomboyish is a balance between two sets of features: Cool-Cute, Hot-Sexy. Thank you so much for another unforgetabble class , Professor Lando. As a duse who loves both tomboys and femboys, your lectures are pure gold and inspiring.
Professor is at it again 🤝
Your examples really helped me understand the concept of "hot vs sexy. "
That is indeed an interesting observation.
Yes. No doubt about it.
100% Revy
Kallen is a tomboy. Period. Someone who say that she's ain't will got femboy-ed.

Professor, I have a question! Would Caska from Berserk qualify as a Tomboy? I think she fits a lot of the Tomboy traits, that is before the “event”.
*ptsd flashbacks*
Yes.
Guts has culture
I think she has qualities that would fool you into thinking she's a tomboy (Short hair, tan, good at fighting) but she isn't actually a tomboy. She doesn't really have any interests besides serving Griffith and she acts a little too feminine for me to consider her a tomboy.
@@bevvvy1374 she can do both

Lando gets a lot of points right here but he doesn't separate real life tomboys and anime tomboys very well. Anime tomboys are a character archetype, but irl tomboys are just masculine women.
Both are good

True tomboys can only be sexy on accident. A tomboy can be pretty, even beautiful, but not sexy on purpose because that would imply caring about high level feminine things which are against the very nature of being a tomboy. A tomboy could be doing yoga or just randomly stretch her body, and by accident awake emotions in those observing, but this can't be intentionally, because a defining trait of a tomboy is that they don't know they are hot, because in their minds only girly girls can be or be seen as attractive.
I love how it seems the world is being flipped to were the love for Fembois and Masc Girls is becoming something I'm seeing more often.

muscular women and tomboys aren’t the same if that’s what you’re implying…
*researching
I feel like this video as a whole is an excuse to talk about Lean Beef Patty being absolutely beautiful and I’m here for it. Love her so much.
A great topic for a lecture.
I feel like I've always been a tomboy my whole life
When I came into this world female, I was given feminine pink clothes and toys etc.
Was an awesome day
Fast forward to the future, I cut my long hair that I've been growing for seven years. I've also tried out and gotten into many sport teams. I feel like me now, and having this tomboy glowup was what I needed. I don't care about the backlash from my family. My self esteem is higher, and when I walk through the halls I feel like a king walking down the run way.

Wendy from Gravity Falls makes an excellent example of what a tomboy is
Wonderful video! Just got a few things I have to disagree or add:
Oh absolutely agree with number 2
I agree that number 2 is amazing as tanned tomboys are prime. but i feel like that is looking more at just the sports tomboys which while a major category misses a lot of others. With the first point I do feel like mikasa has a lot more cool then cute but whenever she touches the scarf she is incredibly cute. This brings into question if it is the frequency of cuteness or the intensity that matters.
Not necessarily in regards to number 2
point 2 is something i wouldnt care about honestly...i mean its always a nice adition but definetly not necessary to complete a tomboy
Professor Lando said there is a lot of grey area, tanned skin can be a characteristic but is not necessary to qualify for a tomboy.
Ryuko Matoi, Akane Tendo, Ukyo Kuonji, Pandy (Dead Leaves), Motoko Kusanagi, Naomi Armitage, Misako (River City Girls)
I like tomboys because I love what I can't have and in this instance, the abs and cool personality
What we need to know is how to date tomboys. Also my fav tomboys are Strongarm from Transformers Robots in Disguise, Revy from Black Lagoon, Kefla, and Seras Victoria from Hellsing ultimate abridged
Professor,
If the quality of being a tomboy is being cool and cute,
then where does Shikimori from Shikimori's not just a cutie lie on your equilibrium model? And can she be defined as a tomboy?
Sorry if this question has been asked before/not relevant to this class.
I think shikimori factors heavier on the cute side. So i'd say she's a cute girl with cool tendencies
Shikimori is a cool girl, that's also a thing
As a Tomboy fanatic since my adolescent years, there are two types. About half are indeed Lesbians....but the other half are straight and the most amazing, awesome mind-blowingly lovers you will ever have! You guys that are only into girly girls don't have clue what you're missing....
This guy needs a refresher course on what makes a tomboy a tomboy
I have to disagree with the attribution of "tomboy" to Mikasa. I think size plays a large role in the identification of tomboys. Additionally I think that Mikasa has more of a "icy" strength instead of the "fiery" strength that embodies tomboys.
thank you Professor Lando i learned so much from this
I think there should have been a segment on Tomboy vs Homegirl.
I enjoyed your colourful descriptions in the end.
thank you professor, i feel very validated as a tomboy

Professor, I suppose it is time to address the elephant in the room: shortstacks. As a colleague said, we need to be able to clarify to the masses between shortstacks and lolis (and also an excuse for Imp Midna because look at her go).

Sometimes I forget that Professor Lando is an artist but this is why I love Lando he's a great teacher and a good artist but I've waited for Lando to talk about Tomboys for so long because I fucking love Tomboys, it's part of what I strive for and I find them cooler. Now does hair really determine what's also a tomboy? I mean I love short hair and prefer it than long most of the time and shorthair also doesn't always mean it's a tomboy but can a tomboy have long hair aswell? Also what's the deference between hot and sexy? I mean tomboys wouldn't be sexy? Like would flexing be sexy? I don't know what really got me into tomboys it's kinda hard for me to remember but I'd say Ryuko from Kill la Kill was probably part of it but my current tomboy I kinda simp for recently would be Ghislaine Dedoldia, I love her.
