This is my favorite moment in all of Star Wars, and it's why Luke is my favorite character. The Last Jedi did everything possible to undo it, and it breaks my heart.

Luke is my favorite too! I also don’t like The Last Jedi, but I do find some comfort in the fact that Luke returned to his heroic legendary self at the end on Crait, and inspired an entire generation as a Jedi Master again!

I never really understood the point of Luke aboard the second Death Star. I think there are 3 possibilities, other than the one that actually played out. 1) Upon reaching the throne room, if Luke does nothing, everything would play out as it did, except he would be dead too. The rebels still would have destroyed the shield generator, the Death Star, the Emperor, and Darth Vader, anyway. 2) Luke kills Vader. In that case, why would Luke ever join Palpatine? Luke's goal was to kill him and save his friends. Joining Palpatine would not save them, as Anakin believed the dark side would have saved Padme. 3) Even if Luke was more curious about the dark side and wanted to learn from Palpatine (as in Legends), the Death Star was about to be destroyed anyway. What was Luke going to do? Order his friends to surrender or die? Palpatine would never let them live, just as with Padme.
