    Rowena was just a hallucination trying to get Sam to kill himself, I didn't see that coming at all.

  • @thysens
    @thysens 4 ปีที่แล้ว +57

    Rowena was a hallucination caused by the Werther Box. What I thought was really genius about the way in which they wrote the episode was that Rowena served the same purpose as all of the other hallucinations: to push the person towards suicide. For Dean, it showed Benny to try and compel him. For the lady, it showed her dead family members to scare her. For Sam, it showed Rowena and made her convince him that his death would help save Dean. You mentioned that Sam could have just taken some blood from Dean- but that was exactly the purpose of Rowena being there. Rowena was the box's way of preventing Sam from figuring that out by himself. Really clever writing from the writer.

    Alsooo the spell. He was trying to give his blood ONLY HIS blood. As in sacrificing himself. One brother dying for the other to survive. BUT Then Dean gets there and gives his blood too so none of them have to die!!!
    They dont have to sacrifice themselves for the other!! They cant get through their issues if they work TOGETHER. IF THEY BOTH LIVE.
    Also ugh yes I hate that this show gets rid of characters..

    • @wtcvidman
      @wtcvidman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      SOME SPOILERS BELOW (in case Dakara reads this):
      I never liked that demon transformation ability of the mark. I thought it was a cheap & convenient plot device in creating demons when we all know how long that process takes and if the mark could create demons in the blink of an eye with the death of its bearer, you'd think Lucifer, Alastair or someone would've found out how it worked and replicated the process through spells or something to create a demon army overnight. At the very least, Lucifer could've had a mark passing party where someone received the mark, was killed & turned into a demon, and then had the mark passed to someone else over the course of 100's or 1000's of people if making demons was that easy.
      I think the season would've been much more interesting if instead of turning Dean (or any human) into a demon with his death, the mark would've turned him more & more crazy/animalistic with each time he died and had Dean die a bunch of times throughout the season as the mark got him more rabid for blood and made him reckless in the way he hunted. A good time for a Dean death for such a plot would've been when he went after all those vampires by himself in this episode. What Dean ended up doing to the Stynes as a human was way way worse than anything he did as a demon, which I thought was a joke.
      I think if they really wanted to do an epic demon Dean storyline, these 4 methods would've worked much better, though some of them would've caused a temporary time paradox until the timeline was restored:
      1. They could've had Metatron time travel and close the gates of hell using the demon tablet's trials in the post No Rest For The Wicked era when Dean was stuck there so that Castiel couldn't have saved Dean back in Lazarus Rising and he would've become a demon & surfaced in the modern day as a demon after Metatron found some way to reverse the hell lockdown trials. That would've also kept Lucifer in his cage since with the gates of hell being closed, he wouldn't be able to escape despite seals being broken. Alastair too wouldn't be able to escape hell with the gates closed & he was key in breaking seals. That would've been a great plot instead of the subpar angel war we got in season 9 and it would've appropriately followed up what Sam tried to do in the season 8 finale. Of course the timeline would have to be restored ultimately, which they could've done with the angel tablet to restore Dean and stop Metatron.
      2. Another way they could've done it is via the multiverse (an Earth where Dean would've remained in hell until he became a demon).
      3. A third way, and one that would've been extremely interesting, would be to have a Supernatural fan, maybe Becky or some real psycho fan who not only believed the stories in the books were real but wanted a real life demon Dean, to write a fanfic that would be embedded with sigils watermarked on the pages of the website it would be posted on for realism that would cause a tulpa to form. The fanfic would be about demon Dean from Dean's dream in Dream A Little Dream Of Me and demon Dean would manifest in the real world as a sort of fanfic dream tulpa caused by all the Supernatural fans of Chuck's books reading the fanfic laced with tulpa sigil watermarks and bringing him to life. I've always loved the meta stuff and thought they should've done way more with tulpas than just what happened in Hell House, so I think that would've been a very interesting way to have done it. This method would not involve altering the past in any way, so it would be very clean to pull off. Another character who could be responsible for such a fanfic is Crowley since he was shown to have the books when he started killing off people the Winchesters saved in season 8, so having Demon Dean in his army of demons would be something he would want.
      4. A fourth way they could've done it is again using the angel tablet where Metatron uses it to rewrite history and alters history with his tablet-powered typewriter to have Gabriel's time loop in The Mystery Spot continue to the present day (which would be the season 9 era) where Dean after being killed the final time would be in hell like Gabriel told Sam in that episode but he would remain there until becoming a demon and return to the season 9 era as a demon. Of course the timeline would be restored ultimately, but it would give us a season of Dean being a demon. I could imagine Metatron with his twisted sense of humor having Dean turn into a yellow eyed demon in the extension of that time loop by having him get trapped with Lucifer in his cage and then pit a yellow-eyed Dean with Sam and write the story for one of the brothers to kill the other. This would've been a spectacular way to pull it off and it would've been a great way to introduce Cain too given Metatron's story would build up to one brother murdering another.
      From these, I'd personally prefer #3 or #4.

    You've said a couple times now that you don't like that Sam is lying to Dean to save him, because Sam was so upset about what Dean did to save Sam in S9...I think you may be misinterpreting what Sam was angry about. I don't believe Sam was upset Dean saved his life, I believe Sam was angry that Dean's solution was to ignore Sam's bodily autonomy and choices and manipulate him into being possessed. That is, that Dean's solution was to hand the reins of Sam's body over to something else. If Dean dies now, he will be a demon again and it won't "be Dean" controlling his brother's body. I think Sam is trying to save Dean from that trauma.

Dude was possessed by Lucifer, Meg all against his will..so it's Sam's biggest fear.. If it was any other option I don't think Sam would've been that angry..This situation is completely different.. This is one of those episodes that sometimes when I watch it I like and then other times I don't care for it as much. I'm not sure why. Maybe it feels like there's a little something missing. But can't for the life of me figure out what it is exactly. I always like the Sam/Rowena scenes so I think it has something to do with the Dean angle or scenes in this episode. Or something to do with the story of the codex or the Werther Box. This eppie served its purpose in the we're trying to remove the Mark of Cain from Dean plot but certainly not my personal favorite.
    As for the Purgatory thing I guess I see it several ways. Certainly, the Mark had some influence on that being the location for his hallucination since it's a place that would feed the Mark in terms of needing to kill. So definitely some influence on that being where his mind went. But even without the Mark's influence Dean stated upon his return from Purgatory that the simplicity - the black and white ness or purity - was what made it alluring somehow. Everything there, pretty much, was a monster so there wasn't a lot of having to weigh the right and wrong thing to do and he didn't have to make a lot of decisions that potentially could have horrible consequences. He's exhausted from fighting the Mark and Purgatory to him was somewhere there wasn't so much internal struggle - endless mental/emotional battle going on. The physical battle in Purgatory was a lot easier, less agonizing, than being back in the regular world where the battle is internal and the lines are never clear. Dean has great confidence in his physical strength/skills but not so much confidence in himself when it comes to internal strength. He has it but he doesn't believe he does and, for me, in those scenes Benny kind of represented that piece of him since he was the voice of Dean telling him to kill himself and trying to convince himself it was honorable.
    Sorry that was really really long. Feeling chatty today I guess.
    Anyway, looking forward to your reactions for the remainder of Season 10.

    The tension of this episode is FAN-FRIGGIN-TASTIC!
    I hate to say this, but FAKE BENNY told the truth, Dean would;ve done it if it was REAL BENNY who had said it- I swear by the Mark, Right Damn HE would. I feel like the only reason Dean didn't kill himself was because of FAKE BENNY being you know? Fake.
    *That's the only REASON he didn't kill himself, Dean understands what happens after Sam and Cas having to kill him, but since it was FAKE BENNY, Dean was like : _Ha! Ha! NOPE!_

    This episode was mostly good in the way it tricks the viewer into thinking Rowena is there only to reveal later on that she's another hallucination. The main thing I don't like about this episode is the whole codex-book of the damned thing, which was crappy storytelling in their origins. I honestly can't buy a random nun having a vision of darkness as they said that revealed to her curse breaking spells. It's just too out of nowhere & too convenient and a very stupid and credibility lacking plot device in a show where other sources of info like the tablets were well thought out. The same is true of the codex, which some grand coven witch would never figure out because the things in the book of the damned were in a code language no human could read. Even the background of the book was nonsensical. The Vatican, cults & covens were said to use it, yet it was supposedly found in a Spanish monastery's library. This contradicts what they revealed about the Styne family having it and using it to cause all those disasters. And another contradiction is how the Vatican, Stynes, cults & covens used it WITHOUT the codex, which had been trapped in the Werther Box that Magnus made. If the Stynes were shown tracking the book as soon as it left their possession when Charlie took it, then it makes no sense how anyone else would've had it or how it would've been left alone in that monastery library, which was not part of the Stynes' property. Nothing about the book or the codex is comprehensible and it's clear how they didn't put thought in their origins and backstories. This is a huge problem I had with season 10 along with the MoC conveniently turning Dean into a demon (which by canon requires untold years of torture), the disappointing way demon Dean was used, the character of Rowena (who I call Crowley lite) getting too much screen time, and the way there really wasn't any villain other than the monster Dean was becoming (Dean only having few scattered moments of being a killing machine deprived that season of a presence of a proper villain). Not to mention a certain something that happens in the finale regarding a certain character that is completely anticlimactic and complete nonsense, but I won't talk about that yet.
    The Susie character seemed interesting and I thought she was killed off too soon. She had the type of gritty, hard life that makes for good hunter characters and I'd rather see characters who had it rough like her, Benny & others of that mold than softee characters that the show started propping up since season 7-8.
    Good video though. I'm glad you're enjoying a season I didn't like too much. Certain episodes do get better with additional viewings, but for me season 10 was lacking a lot. I wish we got to see more of Cain & more of the Stynes, who in my opinion would've made excellent main season villains and should've been seen all season long.
