Crazy bad take on Drake not aiming to be pop. I feel like after the Pusha T diss loss he focused on making music to break records vs being anything of substance.
If Schultz found out someone wasn’t writing their own jokes, and was making more money than him and was popular to tons of regular people, he would be on the same shit Mos Def is on. I don’t know why he’s save-a-ho for Drake.
I don't think it's possible that Schulz writes ALL his own jokes, especially on his world tour because for every single city he tours in, he has local references that are unbelievably specific.
I can't believe Schulz doesn't understand what Mos or Glasses is saying about Drake being Pop. Every one of their takes are exactly right. Rap is his main vehicle for commercial consumption. That's it.

Great discussion about Drake. Schulz actually summed it up well: Drake doesn’t represent Hip Hop for factors that are well beyond his control. Drake grew up a half black half Jewish kid from Toronto. His life experience didn’t match most black Americans - but he definitely had friends who did have those life experiences. Drake didn’t go to a Baptist church on Sunday morning with his angry mom waking him up because the kids overslept and she warned they asses - but he had a friend who did. Drake didn’t eat grandma’s soul food and sleep on the floor with all 20 of his cousins at grandma’s crib during holidays/ summer break - but he probably accompanied his friends for a few of those visits. The list goes on. Drake is still a rapper and a hip hop artist, but he isn’t a representation of the American black experience that we all connect with. He is for the people but not BY the people. He still deserves his flowers for preserving the pure elements of hip hop that we all know in love in an era of Juice worlds, LIL uzi verts, and futures. That’s what glasses Malone is missing.
I think basically that Mos was saying that hip hop is an expression of art and creativity, which can then create commercial success ideally. Drake is just has a first priority of commercial success, which reflects in the type of music he makes.
There’s K-Pop idols who were born after the year 2000 that are rapping better than American artists. I kind of see the point glasses was making. I don’t think rapping well automatically makes you Hip-Hop.
It’s the ghost writing thing. They write their own ish. It’s the five elements of Hiphop. I think the thing that you consider Hiphop now is the sub-genre. You can’t create a thing and then change it. Ok… then take out 50% of the “hip hop” artists that people under 25 listen to. Drake has written for a lot of people as well.
