    I can't believe Schulz doesn't understand what Mos or Glasses is saying about Drake being Pop. Every one of their takes are exactly right. Drake makes music for mass consumption, it's part of the reason he's been as successful as he is but it doesn't change the fact that he purposefully creates music for the masses and not for Hip Hop fans. Rap is his main vehicle for commercial consumption. That's it.

    • @nfsking27
      @nfsking27 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      But to me that's a poor argument because what you are essentially getting at in order to be a true hip hop artist you can't sell out. You can't have commercial success, because to me that's what Moses and Glasses were getting at. In that case you might as well eliminate, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, ludacris, Nelly, Lil Wayne. Like come on now. To me it's a terrible argument

    Great discussion about Drake. Schulz actually summed it up well: Drake doesn’t represent Hip Hop for factors that are well beyond his control. Drake grew up a half black half Jewish kid from Toronto. His life experience didn’t match most black Americans - but he definitely had friends who did have those life experiences. Drake didn’t go to a Baptist church on Sunday morning with his angry mom waking him up because the kids overslept and she warned they asses - but he had a friend who did. Drake didn’t eat grandma’s soul food and sleep on the floor with all 20 of his cousins at grandma’s crib during holidays/ summer break - but he probably accompanied his friends for a few of those visits. The list goes on. Drake is still a rapper and a hip hop artist, but he isn’t a representation of the American black experience that we all connect with. He is for the people but not BY the people. He still deserves his flowers for preserving the pure elements of hip hop that we all know in love in an era of Juice worlds, LIL uzi verts, and futures. That’s what glasses Malone is missing.

    It’s the ghost writing thing. They write their own ish. It’s the five elements of Hiphop. I think the thing that you consider Hiphop now is the sub-genre. You can’t create a thing and then change it. The rapper was a emcee that wrote his own music. Therefore if you got a ghost writer that’s not Hiphop. I just call it mood music.

      Drake has written for a lot of people as well. Dr Dre had eminem write for him, Eazy E had cube write for him, kanye had writers, and yeah q miller wrote for Drake.
      So yeah I guess Kanye eazy dre are mood music artists now or pop artists according to mos def

    To say, drake says “a lot of really deep shit to a lot of these kids” means literally nothing. The majority of drake fans are legitimately kids you’re talking about 12 to 25-year-olds who are partying every weekend getting drunk or high. In high school, college, or just graduating going into life. That’s not the best example group to validate you as a genius in philosophy or intelligence.
    I could name one by Kendrick that would make you think more than drakes entire discography, we all know multiple artist that hits your soul, or makes or makes you think in a way that Drake could never even approach.
    to say because the kids put you up to such a high standard, for your genius, is literally one of the worst examples.

    What Glasses was saying and trying to say while they were belittling saying "jokes"(another reason why our culture can't be taken serious) is WE, black culture, are too lenient with letting anybody no matter the background come in and take our stuff like his example with Post Malone. Everyone saw him as "hip hop" and a rapper but he only was using the genre to get on, it wasn't actually his demeanor. We need to stop looking at hip hop as a class/genre and remember it was a lifestyle that the industry made into a category. For example Country. Country music isn't just a category its a lifestyle and country folk don't play about it. But industry will make money where they can. Remember when Lil Nas X first came out? Old Town Road was number 1 country song for months on all charts and started climbing the country chart which he said he wanted to be seen as but Country didn't like a gay black man winning that so he was taken off the chart. When's the last time you seen a song get removed. Country radio played that shit all day and went certified DIAMOND, but did he win best song at the CMAs? No, he got Musical Event of The Year. WTF is that? All I'm sayin, Country don't play about theres and we shouldn't play or be so "welcoming" sayin anyone is "hip hop" just cuz they rap. I seen rappin on Sesame street and blues clues are they hip hop?? I know you like dick ridin and blurrin lines in pop culture, by stirring the pot but lets be real Schulz 💯

  • @Fabio035

    That Mos Def / Drake / hip-hop discussion proves that it's long overdue to start differentiating between old school hip-hop and modern hip-hop. The same way lots of modern rock of the past 30 years has had little to do with classic rock of the 60s, 70s and 80s.

    • @dre27321
      @dre27321 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Even if you distinguish it from old school hip hop(which I already do) a good majority of drakes music is pop rap(more commercialized rap music categoring to mass appeal) and the other rapper is just rap with a few subgenres mixed in.
      I agree that saying Drake isn’t hip hop is an extremely dumb take but I also agree that Drake is definitely making songs for worldwide appeal and not just making hip hop.
      He routinely borrows from other genres and makes a more commercial version of it like his drill and gangster rap inspired songs. They’re technically in that genre but the way he makes it it’s more accessible.

    • @Fabio035
      @Fabio035 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@dre27321 I totally agree with your take on Drake's music.
      But my point is that this is where modern hip-hop is at. It's a genre that has overtaken pop; as a blend of rap, R&B, pop and pinches of whatever trends in other styles like electronic or rock. And Drake has been the undisputed king of that genre for the last 10 years.
      On the other hand, we have Kendrick Lamar, who's also been a giant during the exact same era. But from the way I see it, he pretty much belongs to a different genre, as his music has been a contemporary approach to old school hip-hop.
