  • China's Autonomous-rail Rapid Transit (ART) system, introduced by CRRC in 2017, blends features of buses, trams, and autonomous (full self-driving) vehicles. It operates on virtual tracks using advanced sensors, providing a flexible and eco-friendly alternative to traditional transit. With rapid charging lithium-titanate batteries or hydrogen fuel cells, ART ensures low emissions and efficient operation. Adopted in several Chinese cities, it's gaining global interest for its cost-effectiveness and adaptability, offering a sustainable solution for urban mobility.

These rapid transit trains or vehicles runs and stops in the middle of the road. So other vehicles will not interfere with its stops. It basically runs like a subways but transfer is much easier. You can transfer to other slower buses along the way. Passenger need to go through underground tunnels to the bus station.

These could be some of the implementations, and technically, the vehicles can stop by the curb for easier boarding and disembarking.

Thanks for your comment! While the Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART) system might look like a bus at first glance, it’s actually quite different. ART vehicles are equipped with sensors and advanced navigation systems that allow them to follow virtual tracks on the road, without the need for traditional rail infrastructure. Although a driver may or may not be present, much of the navigation and driving assistance is handled autonomously. A driver is optional. In fact, most of them are implemented with NO DRIVER at all. It's a step toward smarter, more flexible public transport!

Great point! The Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART) does run on wheels, but what sets it apart is its ability to follow virtual tracks using advanced sensors, similar to a tram or train system. While some versions may have operators for now, the goal is full autonomy. It combines the flexibility of a bus with the efficiency and capacity of a light rail system, making it a unique innovation in public transit!
