Every episode of PURPLE THRILLZ is a road map of ambition drawn by these two iconic musicians. For Michael Jackson...he grew an ambition to break free from the constraints of Motown's restrictive formulaic production style. The ambition to evolve as an individual performer without the limitations of the family group. Michael's time in New York filming the Wiz in the summer of 1977 exposed him to the NYC club scene. Then to the true Wizard Quincy Jones. The collaboration that sprung from their hookup can't be overstated.
Prince has said that after high school he worked as a caddy in Minneapolis for a time. Furthermore that he looked for jobs that he could be interested in. He knew that music was where he lived. Where his true identity could be centered. Once he understood this truth about himself, he knew that he had to go HAM on his work ethic. The impact that his prolific career has had is massive.
The ultimate manifestation of their ambitions was that within a year of each other, they released the seminal recordings, "Thriller" and "Purple Rain". These albums had hits, huge hits! Beat it, Billie Jean, Thriller, Purple Rain, Let's go crazy, and When Doves Cry!
In the 80's the two musicians began what looks like a series of pranks. The 1st time was the infamous James Brown incident. Prince's tour manager is positive that there was something fishy happening there. Next was the massive Jacksons Victory tour. Prince was a guest of the brothers and definitely made his presence felt. Finally there was the recording of we are the world in January of 1985. This historical recording was one of the most historic gatherings of pop royalty in history. Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones, Huey Lewis, Steve Perry, Hall & Oates, Diana Ross, Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Ken Keagen, Dan Aykroyd, Bette Midler, Latoya Jackson, the Jacksons, the Pointer sisters, Lindsey Buckingham, and many others got together to form USA for Africa. The group was gathered for famine relief but there were shenanigans afoot. Prince found himself at Carlos & Charlies. It got messy.
What happens when you produce the work of your life at the age of 25? When you are set for life financially, but you're young enough to have tons of creative life in you and you have no limitations placed on you. This is a dangerous place to exist. Prince and Michael Jackson took different routes in solidifying their respective legacies.

I am from a rural town in Oklahoma and a lifetime fan of both musical icons/legends. I grew up on the Jackson 5 and Motown and I'm an Irish/ Native American mix. (That may surprise some people.) I know a great deal about Michael Jackson and Prince and have had the pleasure of seeing them both in concert in my lifetime. I was at the 1984 Victory Tour concert that kicked off that tour in KS City. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was 5th row from the stage ground seats, nobody sat in our seats. We all stood in them the entire concert. I saw Prince perform twice in Oklahoma City, the Hit & Run concert and Musicology.
These two men were never to be compared to each other, they were so different as artists. Like 🍎 and 🍊, they had their OWN indevidual and INCREDIBLE gifts creatively. We appreciated them as indeviduals. They will never be replaced.

The biggest difference between Michael and Prince was Michael was more spontaneous .. When Mike was on stage his moves with his brothers were choreographed but his individual moves was just him improvising and drawing from the vast reservoir of his musical and dance inspirations.. Everything from Sammy Davis, The Nicholas Bros, Fred Astaire to James Brown, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Supremes, Stevie Wonder you name it ... Prince is legendary for his marathon rehearsal sessions because EVERYTHING he did on stage was calculated and exhaustively choreographed .. Prince was good on the Instruments, Michael was more organic and comfortable in his own skin on stage.. Prince was the artist Michael was the entertainer ! Michael initially had more uplifting energy, Prince was dark and eccentric !!!

On the same station you could hear the O’Jays and the Spinners and Led Zeppelin, Alice cooper, Loretta lynne, Stevie Wonder, Linda rondstadt, Jackson Five, the carpenters, Gordon Lightfoot, Grand Funk Railroad all on the same station. Different races. Different genres. Didn’t matter. Folk. Rock. Funk. R&B, pop, country. All together. So MTVs line is bs. They resegregated music for no reason. And I’m from the Midwest and no, we weren’t afraid of Prince. Omg. Black people live here too. And the white people grew up listening to it all as African Americans. It was awesome. Over time radio stations became very niche which is a shame. To this day I love so many different genres of music.

I think Little Richard may have been the first to join gimmick persona with demand for rightful compensation. Sad, but genius exhibition of the need to trump identity in order to be seen as a person. The public can relate to this cosplay. Everyone has had to deal with assimilation. But, "Black American" stereotyping is on another scale. The pocket watching and the penny snatching when its known you can't be half arsed and do any deal if your classified as "Black." You get to a point to where you pull back or find ways to establish
the borders of your deliverable. You know when your about to be taken.
MJ v. Prince, East Coast vs. West Coast, Jordan v Kobe... Nope he's dead, its Jordan v. Lebron instead. Conditioning for revolving door conditions for people classified as black. There's plenty of money for owners, and everyone aligned and beneath them. What is the cut for the star of the show? It appears being a star means constantly being milked. When there seems to be an expiration date which only puts milking into overdrive. More revenue dead than alive.
I have to admit there was a week I seriously considered dressing up like Hattie McDaniel's mammy character and showing up to the office performing at my highest as usual. In the middle of a summer, not Halloween. There comes a time when you want to put on exhibit the predatory behavior leveraging your skills and totem pole compensation scales.
And it still exists. Only now there are caste system loyalists acting as strawmen for corporations. They do use similar contracts, theirs including non-payment clauses. The difference is between sharecropping and out and out slavery.

Why is it that there is always competition between black musicians? I have not seen this with other groups of people.

It would've been dope to see MJ and Prince grace the stage together where both could shine at what they were specialized in. Imagine if they did at least ONE song together... That would've been HUGE!! I truly believe they were professional and creative rivals and not enemies. They actually admired and respected each other. Sad we'll never see that!

So basically, popular media sold seeds and made these two fellas go after each other. Why is there always competition amongst ourselves?

No lie when I was a Kid back in the 90s I used to think that Prince and Michael Jackson were Brothers judt like I thought the same thing with Ryu and Ken from Street Fighter.
