Great tutorial! We plan on giving these to the family for Christmas. I'll be adding pretty beads to it to doll it up. This tutorial helped me figure out the wire portion. I wasn't sure what type of wire to use, so thanks!!!
Thank you the video. I am planting and doing things in my yard to attract hummingbirds and butterflies. This will be one of my next projects. I do all the yard work except weed eating. I hate that. I do the home maintenance. I make curtains. I stay busy all day with my hobbies, gardening and everything else. I love it. I love to be outside. I love our Houston summertime. My husband and son do what I really dislike like mopping, weed eating most of the cooking. They would rather be inside.
If you heat the copper wire up a bit with a blow torch, it’ll be easier to wrap around the bottle. You don’t have to heat it until it’s red hot, just enough to realigned the crystalline structure of the copper, quench it so you don’t burn yourself, and then the bending and wrapping will make it stiff and strong again. 😉
Thanks for your comment Mirsades. Mold is a very real problem with any hummingbird feeder and it is recommended that you thoroughly clean any type of feeder every three days or so. You can use very hot soapy water to soak the bottles for a good while, then .... FILL the bottle about 1/4 of the way with same water and vigorously shake while your thumb covers the opening. You can also use special hummingbird feeder brushes (like a bottle brush) to reach inside the bottle.
FYI... You can buy that wire by the foot in the bulk section at Lowe's. Much cheaper that way in small amounts. A worker will measure and cut whatever amount you need.
Very Nice!! FYI: The pliers that you are using are not vise grips, they are 'Slip-Joint' pliers. Yes, they are manufactured by the company called 'Vise Grip,' hence the logo on the handle. No big deal, but i thought that you should know so that when one of your smart azz youtubers comes along and posts some ugly comment, you won't be too surprised. Nice job with the bottle, and you make a good instructor; to the point and easy to follow. Take care & GOD Bless!! SuperSniperSal The GUNNY USMC Disabled Vet
Okay, so I have everything done exactly as you did and I bought a feeding tube that was not suppose to leak, and well it leaks I don't understand what it could be maybe the bottle shape, not sure, any suggestions.
Upcycled, Great video. I have made several feeders but find that the spouts leak. All of the liquid just seeps out. I also bought my spouts on Amazon. Do you have any advice?
Laurie W Are you filling your feeder as close to the top as possible, leaving just enough room to snuggly fit the cork? I hear this creates a "vacuum seal" slowing the release of liquid...it seems to work for me. Of course over time, with exposure to the sun the cork will need replacing - eventually. I hope that helps solve the problem.
You can decorate also with red beads. Attach anywhere that is convenient and wouldn't interfere with e.g. cleaning, etc. If you attach the beads to a large enough hook or clasp you can even unhook them easily from the copper wire or wherever they were placed.
Good Idea! The glass bottle slips out of the copper "cage" easily for cleaning so if you did attach beads to the wire you wouldn't have to remove them.
You probably can, but those rubber stoppers are like a buck a piece at Lowes/Home Depot so I've just found it more economical to pick 'em up in bulk already assembled.
Wonderful tutorial, but you forgot one important thing... Finishing it! What do you do with the copper wire at the bottom of the bottle, as far as forming it into a loop, etc. for hanging purposes???????
I went to Home Depot once to buy lumber to build a bookshelf. When I was checking out, the guy in front of me asked what I was building, and I told him, then he asked me who was helping me. I told him I was doing it by myself and he looked so shocked... Just because I'm female doesn't mean I'm incapable of building stuff, heck, I'm planning on building my own house one day just cause I can.
crazy4herps omg that sexist Nazi! I sure hope your okay from that traumatic experience...... to the video maker... awesome job and great idea! I make homemade wine so I have tons of empty wine bottles. gonna try to recreate your creation. or just leave the wine in and get drunk with my hummingbird friends! lol jk

The thing I worry about most with such a narrow neck on the bottle is how to give the bottle a good cleaning without using a dishwasher. Mold grows easily in warm/hot weather in the sugar water and mold is deadly to humingbirds......Mirsades
One thing you can do instead of using that cloth is to put electrical tape over the ridges on the vise grips. Much less clumsy and you will still be able to see what you are doing. I saw that on another video. Have fun!
Thanks, Harry. I haven't tried that yet, though I have tried duct tape and it works for a little bit but gets chewed up pretty quickly. I'll give the electrical tape a try...I also hear gaff tape works REALLY well. It's more like a fabric tape, not easy to find but I hear it works like a charm. So that's on my list too!
Great video !! I was so excited when I saw this and made min and proudly hung i tin the tree.....but I had issues and was wondering if you had the same problem and if so how did you fix it. I ordered the cork tubes from amazon as suggested, but it seems the humming bird food just pours out of it pretty quickly. Like in a day or 2, I thought one may have been defective so tried a couple of more and same thing happened. any suggestions?

Great presentation! Easy to understand! Thanks!

thanks for posting this. Very helpful!
We had hummingbirds as soon as we hung it up! Thanks for the great video!
So glad it helped...and glad to see a few more wine bottles being upcycled. Have fun!
Simple and elegant design. Good video.
Thanks, Karen, glad you liked it.

Great video ! Explained everything & very easy to follow steps. Thank You ! Enjoyed you video and will try this project !

Great instructions, will definitely try it. Thanks for Sharing
You really have great skills and incredible knowledge. I have a few hot sauce bottles this will work with.

Nice video.
Thanks for posting.
Thanks, Gary. Glad you liked it.
Great video. Thanks!
Thanks - I was wondering where to get that.

Found you on Pinterest! Love love love
How much did you sell you bird feeders for at the craft shows?

Just thinking the same thing.
#8 gauge copper is smaller than #6 gauge. Nice video.
Look for food grade Rubber stoppers and fitting tubes in a brew store.
I have the same problem as Laurie W, with it leaking A LOT! Thanks for this info, I'll give it a shot. =]
Thanks!
Why are my feeders leaking? I bought them from Amazon also
Very nice!
Laurie can I buy one of your hummingbird feeders from you online please
My wire doesn’t want to stay in place. I’m using 12 gauge. Maybe it’s too soft?
Yes, I would use a thicker gauge wire.
very cool!
That was a nice video
Simple,effective
Can you make your own hummingbird spout?
You probably can, but those rubber stoppers are like a buck a piece at Lowes/Home Depot so I've just found it more economical to pick 'em up in bulk already assembled.
Wonderful tutorial, but you forgot one important thing... Finishing it!
What do you do with the copper wire at the bottom of the bottle, as far as forming it into a loop, etc. for hanging purposes???????
Right at about minute 8, I show you how to quickly form the wire into a hanging hook. If you sneeze, you may miss it. ;)
Who bends your wire for you? LOL!
You're right, I must have sneezed! Thanks so much Trish :)
I would think you could use a smaller gauge of copper wire that is already soft - I'll try it. I have so much copper wire.
I've made one with the exact same spout. The problem is YOU CAN'T STOP the spout from CONSTANT LEAKING! 😖
Thanks.

Whats the red cap on the end of the tubing?
Just a cap to keep all the fluid from spilling out. It has a tiny hole just big enough for the hummingbird to feed from.
They also make Humbrellas, even red ones by Birds Choice.

You can get a cutter for a couple of bucks where you got the wire. Very easy.
That copper wire is expensive. Why not make out of knit twine or rope. You can even make a nice bottle holder with spare small chains......
Wire too thick you can use 12 or 14
