    You forgot to mention the additional risk-reward mechanic in the biathlon event: the speed of the reticule when shooting depends on the heart rate ("pulse"), which depends on the previous exertion of the skier and slowly descends when resting.

    For the record, in the ski jump event seen at 11:49, you were trying to prevent the guy from doing wacky aerial stunts. The ideal jump had the guy remain perfectly still halfway over his skis with the mechanic being kinda like balancing on a rail in tony hawk. You get more distance for a clean jump. The "Hot dog" event seen at 11:09 is the one where you do wacky tricks. That event doesn't seem to be on the 7800 version.

    Having a 7800 instead of a NES well into the early 90s, snagging a copy of Ballblazer remaindered at Big Lots (where I got most of my 7800 games - the 2600 games I played on the system mostly came from flea markets) was a rare feather in my cap, as it visually did stuff that my friends' NESes could only dream of. I remember even the shiny gradient LucasFilm logo seemed so advanced at the time - and little did I know that that same company was making the adventure games that would be my absolute favorites a few years later, in my teens, and which would shape my taste in games, and what they could do, for life.

    • @mrp4242
      @mrp4242 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was in much the same boat. We got a 7800 for Christmas in 1988, and it was our family’s system into the early nineties--my teens. I considered myself lucky to have any system, and to play the NES or C64, I’d just go to my friends houses. At home, I had built up a solid library of Atari games--2600 titles were cheap (some neighbors and friends given them away for free at times-hello Kaboom and Paddle Controllers) and over the course of about 3 years, I also got eleven 7800 titles. Unfortunately, I never got my hands on Ballblazer.

    I had that Winter Games port; oddly enough i had been looking for that exact game for a while now, somehow forgetting that I'd owned a 7800 at some point. Seeing footage of the shooting range unlocked a deep memory for me; one of going to a closeout store in the mid-90s and finding an Atari 7800 console and about a dozen games for it for less than $10. Most of the games were 2600 games (Crystal Castles, Centipede, Ms Pac Man) but Winter Games, Pole Position 2 and the ever-inscrutable Karateka came along with it for the price. It was definitely fun, and is one of the events in my life that sparked my love for retro gaming, even that far back.

    I knew from the commercial for the Atari 7800 that I needed Ballblazer. I didn't even know what the game was, but I'm pretty sure I got it soon after my family bought the system. It looked so damn good for its time.
    Side note: I still have my Atari 7800, and the last time I hooked it up (probably 2 decades ago), the picture looked very much like the fuzz effects in this video.

    I really like your videos, but have special nostalgia for the Atari 7800, as it was the system we played at my house growing up from 1988-to the early nineties, when it eventually was replaced by the SNES. Thanks for making this.

  • @jbanks979
    @jbanks979 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Part of what crippled the Atari 7800, beyond the lack of games and the (largely) sub-nes resolution, was the fact that Ballblazer was one of two games…….in the entire library…..with a Pokey chip (the other being Commando).
    At this point video game soundtracks became works of art in themselves, and the Atari was stuck with the 10 year old 2600 sound capabilities unless developers ponied up for an on cartridge sound chip.
    I think Winter Games on PC was my first video game

  • @jessragan6714
    @jessragan6714 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    9:42 Ooh, ooh! I can answer this one! There's an Atari 7800 homebrew called Rikki and Vikki that illustrates what the system could have done if Atari had given it a few more years. It's an action/puzzle game with a distinctly NES-like flavor. It's even got a sound chip that's better than the POKEY! (Actually it's more powerful than the 7800 itself, but it just provides musical accompaniment... the system itself does all the heavy lifting.)

    • @LorenHelgeson
      @LorenHelgeson 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I saw it featured on another channel a few months back. Looked pretty promising.

  • @SaturmornCarvilli

    I received Ballblazer along with the 7800 on Christmas. Between it and Pole Position II, I put tons of hours into. Since I wouldn't get a NES for a couple of years later with the money I earned as a paperboy.
    Ballblazer was incredibly fun. Probably the best all round game on the 7800. Although, once I started to get games like Joust, Asteroids and yes, Xevious (0 days without mentioning Xevious). I didn't play it nearly as much. I was too good at it for any human opponent I knew and was stuck at about Droid 7 or 8 vs. the computer.

  • @TheFancifulNorwegian
    @TheFancifulNorwegian 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The standard explanation for the absence of a dedicated sound chip on the 7800 is that there was simply no room left on the motherboard, which due to a diktat from on high had to fit into a case largely identical to that of the existing 2800. A look at the 7800 PCB makes it hard to see how they could've crammed any additional chips in there, though one option would've been to use a daughtercard on top of the main PCB, as was done with a couple of PAL 7800 models (one that added RGB output via SCART and another that needed more space for the RAM due to the use of lower-capacity chips). I've seen someone theorize that GCC left the sound chip out of their design so they could develop their own chip (code-named "GUMBY") for use in 7800 carts and rake in beaucoup royalties from all the games that would use it. It's certainly an interesting explanation, but not one I've seen any actual support for beyond the fact that GCC was indeed developing a sound chip called GUMBY that fell victim to Warner's belt-tightening.

It really made Sega's attempts at similar types of environments in home ports of Space Harrier I & II (a franchise I've loved from the first moment I heard the cool name) and Outrun look kind of incompetent to me. I couldn't quite grasp how they were routinely treated as A-list games over the years. But thanks for the in-depth breakdown here, I'd never even heard of the Pokey chip, but it explains a lot. @@JeremyParish if the talking head segments are 4:3, would you consider rendering and uploading the video at that aspect ratio? especially since that's what aspect ratio the subject usually is?

    Epyx Games series of computer games were really bloody fine games that really excelled as competitive multiplayer games. As solo games they're kinda eh, but games like these weren't really intended for solo play to begin with.

    And I'm pretty sure Ballblazer is the only game to ever make good (musical) use of the Pokey chip, which was already 8+ years old by the time Ballblazer appeared.
    On the other hand, I do have a warped negative bias towards all Atari sound hardware due to it's shrill nature and being born _post_ NES. I hold absolutely no nostalgia for what I have personally likened as "A calliope set aflame".

      Commando on the 7800 also uses a POKEY to good effect. You can tell which TH-camrs are emulating, because they'll only get the sound effects.
      And I think the Alternate Reality series used Pokey for title music, as well?

    Ah Atari. The crash and clueless management pretty much destroyed them.
    Perhaps if Nolan Bushnell had re aquired the company ( hey, it worked for Apple when Jobs came back) maybe he could have fixed things, but,
    I think by 1986 their time was over.

    Did not like fake channel switching (noise and sudden flashes are distracting). Absolutely hate fake fuzz -- just super distracting for no reason.

      It's captured from a real VHS camcorder and passed through RF, so nothing fake here.

      @@diecarro79 I gathered that after I made the comment from Jeremy's replies to others. Impressive dedication to the presentation! (I wouldn't expect any less from him! Always amazing content) Still very visually annoying to me. But if the majority like it, or Jeremy doesn't care what I prefer, I suppose I'll suffer through it :)
