- Really bummed so far with this saw. It’s only a hope that a muffin mod can make this decent or at the worst it can be ok after port work but really not thrilled with the performance at all. A chainsaw needs a bit more power than this for 36 cc chainsaw.
I had a Stihl ms 181 from 2011 and the maximum speed reached after 4 or 5 tanks of gasoline consumed, any new chainsaw needs break-in when working with lower speeds and light demands, with the MS 181 after break-in I cut wood with diameter over 50 cm and I had no problem. I recently purchased MS 271 from 2023 and it overcomes any challenge, very powerful motor for logs larger than 50 cm.
@@Robert___xyz I do understand the break in period of chainsaws. I have it well and broken in now and still feel the same way. I was hoping for better out of this saw for the weight it puts it self out of the running for me
I have a 180 it’s been a pretty good saw.i just purchased a 182 c saw it’s a good saw light and powerful for its weight.
Have you ever run a ms250?
No but considering getting one.
The old saws like the 170 and 180 and 181 CBE are flying off the shelves like hotcakes now
Guaranteed they are! This saw finally broken in I would say is comparable to the 180 for power but quite a lot heavier !!!! Which is my whole problem with it.
yup i bought two 170s just to hold onto as backups because those new models are legit dog crap
@@jonnysnipes3123 definitely not a step in a better direction
Love this comment
@@timberandtoolspeso de uma Ms 250. Comprei mais Ms 170, devido ser mais leve, está na caixa ainda nem funcionei.
I just got a ms180 as a early christmas gift and i was playing with it today for first time and im actually really impressed with it.. this is coming from some one with a 550xp mk2,372 o.e, husq 257 and a old practica 61. Its kinda brilliant for a little 30cc toy saw! I had a ms251 i muffler modded and liked that saw alot too but i sold it for who knows why
Yeah the ms 170/180 really suprised me too! Light and powerful for what it is. !! 550 and 372 are some of the best small husky’s
Yeah, I have the same 180, and I just got it out to clear up a small tree that fell across the driveway. It hadn’t been run in quite awhile, as its primary duty is light imbuing/ pruning, etc.
It took about 7-9 pulls and once warmed up, ran well. These little saws love to smoke.
My old Husky 345 only took 3 pulls to start, after sitting for quite awhile. Two different saws of course. I still kick myself I didnt pick up a one time buy of a 550xp Mk2, couple years ago, for $550.00, from the Stihl dealer. Beautiful saw as You know. Regrets… Take care
@georgedavall9449 you should definitely buy a 550 xp! But ill warn you its a true firewood tree work saw. Its very angry high reving and fast for a 50cc, it punches very well beyond what a normal 50 sized saw is expected to be.. i can bury its 18in bar in hard wood and it just chews its way screaming the whole way threw it, pretty hard to bog it out even with my care free low rakers filed down and it is grabby and jumpy that way. Id say if you can make it fit and careful with your rakers it'll pull a 24 bar
@Sparaco487 550s rip! I have run them however I prefer my Stihl saws. I have basically all of em haha. My Ported 261 does a really nice job for a small saw as well! Stock 261 saws cut great also 👌🏻👌🏻
@georgedavall9449 550 is a great one. I have a 350 and a 346 ported husky 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 love those ones too
You would've been better off buying an MS 170 or 180. These new saws, the MS 162, 172 and 182 are made to comply with current emissions standards, which means they are designed to run incredibly lean. I just bought two 170's to put away, since they're phasing them out.
I have a 170! And yeah they’re choking them out for sure
I know this is about the 180- but I just got my first Sthil 170. I’d only had a couple Ryobi’s and a craftsman before this purchase. The 170 I believe is the smallest, tier 1 model- but over $100 more than any thing else I’d had. Performance, reliability, strength -for its size- I can’t complain. However-user friendly, not so much. For the hype and notoriety of the name, I expected the Cadillac model- base Cadillac, that is. Instead, I find simply cleaning it, keeping the air filter unobstructed, sharpening the chain/ flipping the bar- to be frustrating and a cumbersome chore I’d always looked forward to doing. Putting it back together, tightening the chain, general maintenance-is anything but easy. I find myself asking myself if I shoulda stuck with what I know. The only positive I really have so far is I dint get the goofy looks when I break it out like I did with the Ryobi. Not sure I cared about that enough to have paid an extra $100+ for a name.
Interesting, I have never noticed a difference on that front! But yeah it’s a home owner saw for sure
Funny review. You use a chainsaw like my dead grandpa.
I have never seen anyone try to starting chainsaw with the blade cover on it.
I run STIHL 021 for over 25 years. Going to get a new STIHL. Thanks for the review.
@@chefgiovanni 🤣🤣🤣thanks appreciate it
U run chainsaws for 25 years and think a chainsaw has a blade
💥
@@mariedolan-nq7zq Earned. It's a chain of course. LOL
The 211 is oke what did u buy tho?
These things are literally weighed down by European and US emissions standards, the 2mix engines are heavier. You can get a lot more power out of the 180 by removing the baffle on the carburettor and opening up the exhaust as well as raising the needle valve slightly to give it a richer mixture.
The ms 180 sure perks right up!
Maybe file a little off the rakers? It didn't seem to be pulling into the cut, from what I saw in the video?
Of course with a few more tanks run through, and a muffler mod, maybe it would do better? These Stihl’s are definitely made to a ‘price point.’ Stay safe
Yeah for sure the chain is swiped a few passes already but this is before I muff modded and it isn’t broken in yet. Saw definitely picked up a fair bit but still dissatisfied about its weight vs power!
I bought a 182 ms still chain saw for 200.00 dollars. It's a $427.99 saw. I bought my for $200.00 with brand new chain and new bar and 6 pack oil. All that was extra and a 2 years warranty on stop of it. Now that is a bargain
@@CharlesWilliams-dn9ui wow that’s a great deal !
Nothing like a new toy, I have just as good of luck with the poulan or echo for cutting misquite wood
Personally like echo! Usually requires a muffler mod but I do like echo saws overall especially the 2511
I have had a number of 170s and 180s, and two 171s. I love the 171 for what it is- good anti vibe, light, little easier to work on than the 170s, bigger engine and more power. Does the 182 type have a cat in the muffler? prying that junk out and opening up the muffler sure wakes up an Echo 450 or Domar makita 4300, perhaps it might be similar.
No cat just super small holes ! Muffler mods always help any saw made in the last 20-30 years haha
Hi there.. i'm really into buying a new sthil for domestic purpose.. local shop still has de 181CBE which cost more than the new
model ms182.. should i buy the 181 model? cuz has less power.. durability?
@@davidrodrigues9485 181 I don’t have personal experience with but I believe it’s similar to the 180. I’m going to say yes 181 better than 182 for weight and I haven’t heard anything bad with them. Ms 170 is lighter yet
Thanks ❤🎉😊
Tree huggers invented those flippy caps
lol yeah I wish it was a flippy screw cap instead !!!
@@timberandtools I phucking hate em. I just bought a holzforrma g660 just to see what's up with these Chinese saws. Once I saw the old style caps, I hit "buy now"
@bing12345678901 yeah the old caps were so much better!!! I have a few farmertec saws. They have been good to me so far especially considering the price.
@timberandtools good to hear that. What fuel ratio you run in it?
@@bing12345678901 same as all my saws 42-1
Thank you for your opinion. I am very interested to see the outcome and you new opinion after any mods being done. Which Husky did you mention that you liked better and did you do a review of it?
I think I mentioned the Stihl 250. Maybe it was the 440 husky (I ported one and have a video on the channel) I mentioned I don’t remember haha. I like the 250 best for an under 60cc chainsaw.
I went to my local Stihl guy a couple of years ago with the intention of buying an MS170 as I wanted a smaller saw than my 261,462 and 660 and I had already obtained a stihl 14" bar and chain from a friend who didn't need it. He promptly steered me in the direction of an MS 211 and I have to say it has been a great little saw with the 14" bar and never let me down.
Never ran a 211 but the dealer was doing his job!! Personally I like the 170 after some small modifications 👌🏻 it’s a small little limbing saw!
FYI, Stihl is also replacing the MS 211s with the MS 212 C-BE (EZ Start and Quick Chain Adjust).
@@rphiliprogers saw that it’s sad !
I thought about buying one, ending up getting a Husky 120 instead, more power
Yeah these aren’t great unfortunately!
how many ounces per gallon would your 42:1 mix be?
5 gal mix oil to 4.2 gallons of fuel or 2.1 gallons to a 2.5 mix oil jug
Open up muffler hole and get rid of limiter caps and readjust carburetor.
Already done with a video up haha
Nice saw. I like it. My local stihl mechanic is stoked to get rid of the old 170s and 180s and have a new saw to work on and sell
It’s really not very good tbh
No break in?
I break em in like I run em… never had a problem
Stihl breaks them in b4 they are shipped to the stores
@jeffrey9102 I am curious where you heard this? I don’t believe it is true
It's 100% true, I bought a kombi 94r and I was worried about reving it to high but I called them they told me they test each machine out b4 it hits the stores
@@jeffrey9102 that cannot be possible I have never seen or smelled gas in any new saw including in carburetor while disassembling new saws before modifying them. Seems impossible for them to remove allllll traces of fuel
And you're not impressed because? I somehow missed it in the video. Yeah, it is a homeowner saw, nothing 'pro'.
It is worse than my 170 as far as power. Maybe it’ll break in better but it isn’t great right now
@@timberandtools Thanks. Usually the saw reaches the peak performace after you ran out a few saw gas tanks. So, i would not judge the power immediately.
The 182 should have more raw power so .. anyway, cheers
@@t4t4s0l yeah it will be better after break in for sure but just wish it wasn’t heavier with the same or so performance 😣
the 170 is considered homeowner but it should be classified above that tbh. the 171 is legit a crappy homeowner saw. stihl lower end model saws are no becoming the néw homelite and poulan of chainsaws
@@jonnysnipes3123 yes sad truth but truth none the less. If a saw can withstand daily use and isn’t underpowered it’s not a homo saw!!

Just bought the ms182c, the guy filled it w/ fluids, started it in store, now I’m home and the piece of crap won’t start. Wtf
@@maryeurich3190 dang brother, do you have experience with saws?
@@maryeurich3190 starting is done following the instructions of the engineer at the store or those in the Stihl company manual. from my side, press the accelerator to the maximum so that you can move the start button all the way down, pull the starter cord until it feels like it wants to start, then move the button to semi-shock and pull the cord it will start with the engine running, press the accelerator lightly and the button switch to working mode. if you don't do that you will drown the engine with gasoline and it won't start.
That’s right
Stick with my 135 mk2 best of the sub 40cc units in my opinion, use mine as my limbing saw for 3 years n hasnt skipped a beat 👍
Husky makes a good saw no doubt about it 👌🏻

@@davt8615 yes they’re very much so work horses!!
I love mine for light work
@@srephenmathisen9108 it’s not that the saw doesn’t work well it’s just that a ms 250 has a lot more power and is same weight. Thats my main gripe
У меня штиль 172. Для кровельных работ нам хватает. Для вырубки деревьев используем 372 хуску. Россия.
Yes 372 is a great saw !
Just bought a 182C. Brand new. Won’t fire. So I keep grabbing my Husky.
@@stevensmith7371 take it back! Dang that sucks
I have very little time behind those homeowner saws. From what I experienced, open the exhaust way up and check for any restrictions on the intake. There’s usually some good restrictions built in that need to be removed with a dermal tool. I haven’t messed with the 182 though.
How long have you been running Stihl Ultra? I lost 4 engines to it at 50:1 and I know a lot of people that have trashed engines at as low as 32:1. I’ve also known a few people who have run it for years and years without any problems.
Running up ultra for 7 years at 42-1 and yeah they have it choked out badly
@@timberandtoolsYep and yep! I figured that you’ve been running it a while. The guy that talked me into running Ultra had zero issues.
@@PurpleNovember what happend with your saws? Just p and c failure???
@@timberandtools yes, piston and cylinder failure due to insufficient lubrication. Three saws and a string trimmer and they all spent extended periods of time under a load at WOT. I run Amsoil Saber now.
@@timberandtools There was one that I used for milling that also had bearing failure.
No sprocket on the bar… they can keep their “light” bar 😂
@@jarvisskooge8602 I agree, I won’t buy them unless it comes with the saw. Sugi is just as good
So my friend which saw is better the 170-180 or the new 182-212 and why ;;
Well it’s going to be hard to say based on long term durability however I will say though they have their weeks the 170/180 were definitely a decent saw for the money. This platform 162/182 are heavier but I will say I like the adjustable carb and side tensioner from the factory. They each have good and bad points
Every sense I have 70cc saws that’s just about alll I run
I have 440-462-500 etc. I use the smallest size I can haha. Don’t want to wear out to soon 😅
Total crap in my opinion. I know that not everyone needs a really nice saw. I get it. But for the same or less money, you have multiple choices of cheap saws that are better. For me, anything south of 40cc should only be top handle territory.
Yeah totally agree, even with a muffin mod it’s not really impressive in any respect haha.
Purchased a 182 today, ran for 5 minutes. Spent half an hour trying restart it. Took it back. Service couldn’t get it to run either. Monday their mechanic looks at it. Lasted 5 minutes!
Wowwwwwww
She needs a non safety 14 inch bar and chain and open the muffler a tad.
Already muff modded it now, it’ll pull a 16” just a shame the made these so freaking heavy for what it is
I got a 162 for free, its OK. My dads CS310 is better imho. I have a 251, 271, & 362, they are just better saws. I guess this new line is decent for the occasional homeowner use stuff.
@@jayminer9416 yeah, sad to say the new homeowner line isn’t great. Even echo with the 4920 is now a clamshell saw and also heavier ughhh
For anyone looking to buy one of these for home use you'll be better of getting a china saw with a good chain does the same job for a cheaper price just my opinion 🤷
Yes a pro series clone saw would be money better spent !
C'mon man, it's a little home owner saw that might need to be used a half dozen times in it's life . If you wanted a liming saw or something you should have stepped up to a 200 or 210 at least . If you wanted to be a real timber cutter, step up to reality . Get yourself a 362 or bigger made for a man . geeez . lol That saw is made for women . hahaha
Your funny buddy, I have ported 660s 440-462-500-400 you name it I have it as a Stihl pro saw. Just making this video to warn people cause this is not a great saw from Stihl. The 170-180 were better
My ms 182 sucks it won’t start after it’s been run then turned off it’s a use once a day saw very disappointed my ms 170 ran with no problems for over 15 years
New Ms 182 is crap
Sorry to hear that! I agree ms 182 not great 😑
