I bought this same bike a few weeks ago. Amazing power, comfort, performance. I considered and was about to buy a Road King, then I rode the Springfield Dark Horse. Not much comparison. Better handling, suspension and chassis. Ride and decide.
I bought this bike back in May, White Smoke. I have owned a Road Glide, Road King, and I can tell you, in my opinion Indian is far superior to the Harley. You just get more for your money. Plus there are just things I really like about what Indian does. Every Harley I bought right off the bat, you need to change all the lights out to LED, The Indian has it standard. The only thing I had to add was the LED Head lamp, Heel shifter, and TAB Performance Slip Ons. It sounds bigger and meaner than any Harley I ever had. Every Harley I had I could never get away with just slip ons. I had to do header pipes, tunes, bars, LED lighting. Lots of upgrades to get to where this bike is pretty much out of the box. Then you add remote locking bags, ride control, tire sensors, Mono adjustable air shock in the back, longer wheel base, which makes for a much more comfortable ride for the rider and passenger, and the 116 Thunder stroke is a beast! Also another issue I had with Harley was the backrest. I had a brand new Roadglide 2017. Bought a backrest and they claim its "quick release" I had to wedge it on the frame and was never able to get it off. It was so tight. The Indian goes on and off like butter and has the panels that click in when you aren't using it to give it a nice clean look. It takes a total of 10 seconds to remove and put on. Big brownie points for me there. I know it sounds like i'm dogging Harley, I'm really not. I think Harley makes a sweet bike, but after riding and purchasing an Indian, I don't see myself going back to Harley. I'm dug in and super happy with the Indian products I have owned. The are both American Companies so I'm supportive of both brands! If you want to hear my exhaust with just slip ons have a listen! th-cam.com/video/dLklWu6fhdE/w-d-xo.html
Man, I really, REALLY wanted to love this bike but maybe I am too used to Harleys? I own a 2020 RKS and my bike felt more maneuverable, had a better throttle response and the paint just looks better overall. The throttle response was almost like my RKS in sport mode with the SDH but it felt so laggy in the other modes, maybe I had a bad test motorcycle? There is a lot of plastic that I am not used to seeing compared to a Harley as well. However, I am interested in the years of your bikes because Harley has TPMS, and ride control technologies if you get the RDRS (C-ABS, ELB, C-ELB, C-TCS, DSCS, C-DSCS, VHC) which I think this bike doesn't even offer...or at least I did not get a chance to see it. I thought the suspension on the RKS was on-par with the SDH but maybe your bikes are older and are not a part of the new touring frame? I will agree with the LED thing, I am not sure why Harley still does not put LEDs on the higher end bikes. The 2021 model of my bike comes with the daymaker LED headlight but I do not believe it is the adaptive model (boo). As far as making it loud I think you may be just a *bit* bias, lol, I have heard Harley's that sound like jet fighters taking off which I think just makes you look like a 16 year old girl looking for attention but to each his own. The new Harley's are quieter and the screaming eagle exhaust is quieter because big daddy gov't came down on harley for violating EPA standards. Do not worry, when Indian becomes more popular the EPA will take notice and will come down on Polaris just like they did on Harley. I really wanted to love Indian so I could get rid of the Harley tax but IMO, their bikes are just not there yet. They are very close and I am not dogging Indian, I actually like their styling a LOT better than Harley's 2021 line up (seriously harley, WTF?) but the cost between this bike and my RKS is pennies on the dollar but I get more tech with my bike (optional RDRS package). Geeze, never thought I would say that about a Harley.
@@NeverDoubtMe23 I owned a 2012 Street Bob with the 96, 2012 Road King with 103, and a 2017 RG with a 107. Those bikes had full exhaust on them and didn't sound anything even close to my Springfield. The Street Bob sounded the best with the VH Short Shots and no baffles. I really didn't dig the 107 M8. I mean it's not like it was a bad bike but compared to my Springfield I could never justify buying another. I have since put a full tab performance exhaust on my Indian and it really is the best sounding bike I ever had. My buddy just got a 21 street glide. He had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get that thing sounding right, and he still doesn't have LED lights, power locking bags, and ride control. His bike was 25k. I think Indian has arrived. You get more bang for your buck, a better, more reliable product, plus you are buying from a company that actually has a clue about performance engines and how to build them. Harley's technology is dated and they just aren't keeping up. But I still love these two American Companies with all that said. I just prefer Indian.

Wow, such a beautiful machine. I had a Fatboy for about 10 years and the ride kind of reminds me of that but I like this a little better I think. The only thing I would disagree with you on is the handlebars. It's all subjective, but I think I would go with the Beach Bar handlebars on this ride. Great review.
I'm working on picking one up in Denton Texas and immediately taking a dremel to the front fender and scalping about 40% off and putting true duals on it.
I know someone that did the true duals on a roadmaster with tab exhaust and it sounds really good. Dropping the cat also shaves off quite a bit of weight. He said it was actually noticable
They are solid. They do have the better ride of the touring models of Indian due to the longer rake and such. And then add that 116 to that lighter bike and you get an unexpected rocket.

Could you talk about the handlebars some more lol. But seriously, it's a great bike and my next bike. Pulling the trigger this week. Same color. I don't want to be trapped behind a faring the rest of my life and I'm sick of listening to everyone's stereos. I personally want less motorcycle not more. This bike can easily be rigged out to do double duty as an in town cruiser and a long haul tourer. I've owned a Road King (2), Road Glide, Electra Glide Ultra Classic, GL1800 Goldwing, 4 Kawasaki's, a Suzuki M109 and a Vintage GL1100 naked Goldwing. To me this combines the best of all things. Ride quality, power, convenience & safety (cruise, ride modes, ABS etc.) a low seat height, and finally plenty of aftermarket support for accessories. Can't wait. I enjoyed my Harley's but every single one had some form of inherent engine defect meaning, HD knew it was an issue but sent the out to market anyway (think tc88 cm chain tensioners and TC96 compensator sprocket and wimpy weak clutch). No more. Indian puts out a practically bulletproof high quality product.
Great looking bike. Kind of reminds me of my 2016 Harley FLSS. Perhaps I'll have to test ride one of these to compare. I love my Harley too much to ever get rid of it though. I do, however, plan to get an Indian some day soon.

Springfield had always the same rake like Chieftain/ Roadmaster, 25 Degr. Chiefs and Vintage Model had till 2020 a different rake: 28 Degr. Since 2020 all models have same 25 Degr.. So, better Low Speed Handling.
@@joevsfood personally, I think the chief just looks a lot cleaner, and much more like a “one of a kind” thing you don’t see everyday be. @@amb158 hey I understand. I just have my regrets. The 116 alone is worth the upgrades to me. Not to mention the front fender, wheel, bags and seat. I have spent a fortune turning mine in to a Springfield lol.
I think that I'm highly leaning towards either this bike or the standard Springfield as my next bike. Love the looks of it and every review I've sern gives it high marks. I'm just on the fence if I'd like the chieftain better, having the fairing would be nice or would it? Coming from a Victory Hammer I've only ridden a fairing bike once, a 2018 street glide special demo event, and it was ok but didn't really get the miles in to see if I'd appreciate the fairing or regret it. I guess that's why right now Im leaning towards the Springfield as the removable windshield is a nice option.
I have come to an appreciation of fairings as of recent. I will say that because I have windshieldless machines in the garage and a fully faired machine that I can just move back and forth depending on the day and how I am feeling. Having the ability to detach was a nice touch to have when I had the America LT and the Sportster 1200T. Windshields are also lighter on the bars and not as busy, but provide adequate wind protection on those longer rides to aid in lessoning fatigue. So I would say test ride both back to back to back and see which fits you best. I would get any of them to be honest.
I just had the realization that I do not have the actual Chief Dark Horse from this generation. I have the Roadmaster with the 116, and I rode a previous gen Chieftain with the 116 upgrade kit but never posted. So I am going to have to go back and play.
@@RabidHedgehog Yeah man! The bike is one of my dream bikes. Being a new rider and all this allows me to live Vicariously. Anyway thank you for the great content. Ride safe.
Those two CHROME screws on the top of the headlight are a real distraction! Why would they not make them blend into the headlight? Other than that, this bike looks awesome. I’d probably add some lowers to protect my knees as well as a small windshield (like Harleys split smoked windshield) for those long rides
Not a big fan of Indian, but I would say this is at the top of my list for their bikes. I like that it doesn't have those horrible low flat handlebars, the heel shifter, or that ugly front fender on it. I like the blacked out treatment, but I am not a fan of flat paint. Not just Indian, but anyone's flat paint. I would have to ride this and the Harley Road King.
What is your take on the kickstand ?Do you have a reach issue at 6'? How do you feel about the dummy fuel cap and the oversized, tall and squarish Front Brake reservoir that we are staring at?
That colour is beautiful! I'd love to see that colour on the 2021 Chieftain darkhorse. I'd also be interested to know if the 108 is coming to the Springfield/Chieftain lineup? The thunderstroke is a nice motor with lots of torque and a good sound but some riders just want that power the 108 offers.
I half wonder if they will have a separate line of 108 powered baggers and touring machines starting with the Challenger and making some new designs upon that platform.
Thought the Springfield was designed with a tighter triangle, less rake?? And ive test ridden the original versions of darkhorse (chief platform) and Springfield... the Springfield was able to turn on a dime. Very nimble. Maybe mini apes caused different handling?
Springfield is about an inch longer in length and the seat is an inch taller as well than the Chieftain. Wheel base is 67 inches as well vs. 65.7. It's subtle, but somewhat there.
Might go for the older model Chief at that point as there would be some wires and such hanging out. I mean if you custom do it and fill in mounting holes and such you can make it clean.
Dude, you are doing a pretty darn good review on the ride and handling. I been shopping for my next ride (a second stable horse).. I tried a 2011 Road King (seat sits too high and found the shake getting annoying) and a 2018 Chieftain 111 (poor brakes and power dropped around 80 mpr), and if these were all to have to offer at the time, I'd just shop for a old Roadstar and be happier with it..but since I already a have a Yamaha (Stratoliner), instead I just bought an 2010 Triumph Thunderbird 1600, 6 speed to tinker with.. Now it does remind me of a bulldog.. compact, and stout, and tight, and handles great. However with the 2020 Chieftain's having the 116, I might now have a reason to re-consider to to keep boredom from setting in. You have to give Indian credit for constantly making meaningful improvements, they are pushing their envelope with passion..
I had a green Indian scout bobber twenty, all within 2 weeks, battery died when I got home. Rear tire exploded on my way to a biker party, then to finish it off a cager totaled my bike taking an illegal left turn. Def staying away from green next time
That opening drive by clip... Can you believe it? A motorcycle that has a real overdrive? The engine barely sounds like it's ticking over above an idle as it's flying by at 65 mph... Imagine if the Japanese had geared their motorcycles like that? Is Indian the only brand on Earth right now that has proper gear ratios on a motorcycle? Based on that clip, I want an Indian motorcycle. There's nothing more relaxing and soothing than a low RPM engine at high speeds.
Ok, so currently I’m on a breakout. Not loving it.. looks awesome and that’s about it.. I’m after an Opinion wether the Indian ride is better and can I take a corner without scrubbing hardware?
Ride is better for dang sure. Hardware rubbing is going to happen, not as fast as a Breakout, cause that thing hits fast, but going to happen. The Challenger in a bagger is about the only one that will not scrape as much as say the Springfield or Chieftain, but it'll still hit a floorboard.
Exactly what I stated in another comment plus if you get the RDRS package for the RKS, you get way more tech with the Harley than the Indian (bet you never expected to hear that!)
@@NeverDoubtMe23 yes, I have the 2020 Road King Special. I love the bike. Have added a detachable windshield. Ride about 50/50 with the windshield off and windshield on. RDRS is a great feature that I keep inguaged 90% of the time. 114 engine has plenty of power and torque for my riding style.
Is it possible to get one of these without the big fenders and the hard bag containers? Shit would look so much better without that Is it stupid to get one and Bob it out? Is that economically viable? (D-fense.) I'm not the biggest fan of how the scout looks because of the front and the tank. Doesn't anyone else think the design on the tank isn't as good as on the others plus it's too low. Doesn't it seem like it's almost level with the seat? That to me makes it kinda suck
Any bike can be made into what you want. They have the Vintage that you could probably swap the fenders over form this to help out or mod the fenders the way you want. But nothing stock at this time.
@@oneslave3318 Great advice, if you could actually just "Peel it off". The question was: "Anyone happen to know why they put that nasty looking sticker on the tank?". Got any input on that?

I have come to an appreciation of fairings as of recent. I will say that because I have windshieldless machines in the garage and a fully faired machine that I can just move back and forth depending on the day and how I am feeling. Having the ability to detach was a nice touch to have when I had the America LT and the Sportster 1200T. Windshields are also lighter on the bars and not as busy, but provide adequate wind protection on those longer rides to aid in lessoning fatigue. So I would say test ride both back to back to back and see which fits you best. I would get any of them to be honest.
I wish they'd put the powerplus in it. I'm not old enough to like fairings yet so I don't want to get a challenger.. I'd rather have a springfield
I am a windscreen guy myself. Been behind them for a lot of years and just don't like fairings, radios and electronic gadgets.
Great review. Thanks !
Do the 2020 chief dark horse next!
I just had the realization that I do not have the actual Chief Dark Horse from this generation. I have the Roadmaster with the 116, and I rode a previous gen Chieftain with the 116 upgrade kit but never posted. So I am going to have to go back and play.
@@RabidHedgehog awesome! Cant wait!
Awesome just awesome!
Thanks!
@@RabidHedgehog Yeah man! The bike is one of my dream bikes. Being a new rider and all this allows me to live Vicariously. Anyway thank you for the great content. Ride safe.
Pretty much a Victory with Indian badge !!! Beautiful bike man !!! 🙏👍
Actually they are very different than the Victory. I miss Victory Motorcycles!!!
Completely different bike
Those two CHROME screws on the top of the headlight are a real distraction! Why would they not make them blend into the headlight? Other than that, this bike looks awesome. I’d probably add some lowers to protect my knees as well as a small windshield (like Harleys split smoked windshield) for those long rides
Not trying to be mean, but maybe you should be a little concerned with being so easily distracted when riding.
Not trying to be mean but, I’ve been riding for over 40 years. When you get to that point, I’ll start listening to your advice
front half of bike looks great, the rear half looks horrible especially the section below seat
No heel shifter, thank you!
Great review what kind of helmet are you wearing almost no wind noise?
The wind noise is more handled by having a separate field recorder with a filter actively working to cut it out.
Kewl 😮
Springfield has the same rake as Chieftan (25 degrees) Shorter trail than Chieftan. 5.2 inches to the Chieftans 5.9 inches
Craig Smith
If you don't want to buy one you better not ride it.
@@oneslave3318
If it has that flat paint on it I won't even look at it let alone ride it.
My Chieftain leaves Challenger in the dust.
I wonder if the hard storage saddles in the back can be taken out and put a grill storage on top of back wheel instead
Might go for the older model Chief at that point as there would be some wires and such hanging out. I mean if you custom do it and fill in mounting holes and such you can make it clean.
I'm surprised this big of a bike does not have a hydraulic clutch.
Not as heavy of a pull than some of its competitors though and one less maintenance item ish. But still for a cable non-assist, it's not bad at all.
No need for one! I have put 50,000 miles on two different Indian and they work great no issues and easy pull.
I got SOOO much hate from wifeys grandpa when I bought my old Dyna Lowrider in deep jade sunglo
I want this fucker so bad. Thanks for the review!
I had a green Indian scout bobber twenty, all within 2 weeks, battery died when I got home. Rear tire exploded on my way to a biker party, then to finish it off a cager totaled my bike taking an illegal left turn. Def staying away from green next time
Nice color, but I like the Harley look like a Road King much better!
Nice bike and different 👌 everybody and there mother has harkey .my pick indian over harley .
This a texas road?
Okie road
Where is the indian dealer in okc
Stop complaining already. We get it. The bars need to be closer._but seriously
Enjoyed your video. And the ride looked like a very smooth ride.
How about automatic transmission
“If you hate the colour of a bike, you need to look in the mirror and hate that”
Me: ok 👍🏻
Interesting... but kinda weird looking
Which rides and handles better?
Between this and the Vintage I would take the vintage if that is what you meant?
@@RabidHedgehog why did you lean towards the Vintage?
what`s the name of the colour ?
Myb n couple yrs I'll get a " Indian bagger"
I like the bike, but it does look like a copy of the Road King Special.
It's a polaris
You look like your on a slow ride .
Take it easy! :)
Top speed?
Limited to 110 or 111 MPH
It's governed she has a lot more than 115 stock
But nothing stock at this time.
give it some GAS
There,s just something about the look of this bike that rubs me the wrong way, sure aint no street glide.
into the void
Just lucky I think.
I got a 111 and won't to to a 116 kit is this the same engine as the 111 with just a kit
They build without the kit and it's just a straight up build of the engine to 116. I wouldn't doubt that in technically they use similar components.
Being 6foot around 400 32inch inseam would this be a good beginning bike?
If you're comfortable with the weight of the machine and how it handles it can be.
I’m not superstitious but I am a little stitious....
Love me some office.
Spokes please.
Must say the two bolts above the handlebar holding the plastic cover on are annoying me, looks like a shitty afterthought.
How would this be for a shorter rider?
tyuring
Anyone happen to know why they put that nasty looking sticker on the tank? That's got to be the dumbest shit I've ever seen on such a beautiful bike.

Peel it off.
@@oneslave3318 Great advice, if you could actually just "Peel it off". The question was: "Anyone happen to know why they put that nasty looking sticker on the tank?". Got any input on that?

You're right.
For the few seconds I was kind of looking at her with a good eye.
