Shirogorov's bearings are meant to be lubricated with a small amount of grease. It ensures that none of the ball bearings drop out during installation or re-installation. It does a better job of keeping dirt and debris out and It's also why the movement of their knives is so smooth!!
Great maintenance class Mr. Shabazz. We give you a B+ for effort & an A+ for perseverence. We use either wooded/plastic toothpicks as part of our tools, mod to specification. Heavy lubricant is recommended as it holds the bearings & acts as a sealant so dirt/dust would find it difficult to enter. There are 17 other ways for servicing Shiros but all of them may have trade-offs. Always enjoy watching the legend at work. Greetings from Australia.
Get an Ultrasonic cleaner Nick you won't regret it. I got myself a GT Sonic 2.2L capacity, with heating elements that can heat up to 90*c and run for 2hours. And it's been more useful than I thought, it's so nice to clean Jewelry, watch bands, knife parts, and just random items that you need to clean fast without feeling you are doing surgery.
I've had the body screw (Hati) loosen up twice, and fall out onto the forest floor once. In the process of figuring out how to get a single screw without paying $80 for an unneeded whole rebuild kit, I definitely think locktite is in order. Not the never-let-go stuff, but a softer grade.
Excited to see this one. Honestly, I HATE Shirogorv's names for their knives. I would have bought one by now if I could even remotely keep track of the differences. For example, they've also got the "Quantum Ursus NL". No clue what the Ursus designation means, if anything. No clue what the NL designation means, if anything. And honestly, there are so many great pieces I'm chasing, I just don't even care to try to sort out all the Shiros in the meantime. I agree with you on pricing. I find myself scratching my head, especially looking at some of their more 'basic' production stuff, trying to figure out how the math works. People keep telling me "You just don't get it if you've never felt a Shiro" - but I've felt Holts and Craig Browns (ny two favorites), and I really can't fathom anything coming close to blowing those out of the water.
The reason Shiro uses the non caged bearings is because you can get them much flater than caged bearings and it makes the tolerances tighter in turn less debris gets between the bearings and scales. That info is coming from Shiro 👊🏼
REASSEMBLY TIP: Put the bearings into each side of the frame, with the blade collar already in that side. Put the blade onto the side with the blade collar, sandwiching the bearings in place. Flip the side with the blade, collar and frame onto the other side of the fram, guiding the collar into place. No risk of dropping bearings, and it all goes together easy.
I was gonna say “Nick you need an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner”. But apparently you are aware. I think a jewelry cleaner is absolutely fine on a desk. I think more so than a workbench. Just my opinion.
If you have the patience, you can learn a lot here about watchmaking. Tbh, I learned how to service all my Seiko autos as well as 2 other watches I own with Swiss movements. 1 watch has the Sellita SW200 movement, and the other has an ETA 2824-2 movement. the SW200 and the 2824-2 are basically the exact same movements. I learned by buying a few cheap movements on eBay that I didn't care if I screwed up on and went to it. If you're willing to learn and have patience, it's really not that hard to do. Obviously, you do need to invest in some quality tools, oils, etc. (which can get a bit expensive tbh). you'd also be really surprised at how different a pair of $40 tweezers feel compared to a cheap $2 pair of Chinese garbage. you have a lot more control with Swiss made tweezers that were specifically made for watchmaking.
I used to love Shirogorov flippers, I’ve had about 35 different models as well as their very expensive disassembly tool with tweezers, I have sold most of them recently, though still own 4 knives including Quantum Gen. 2 which is used to be one of my favorite production model (it is an awesome flipper) but after ruzzia has started an unjustifiable brutal and ruthless war in Ukraine a year ago , basically, daily committing genocide of Ukrainians, and invaded my country, I have stopped caring and purchasing any ruzzian blades because if I do continue to buy their immensely overpriced titanium frame-lock knives I’d be supporting war as Shiro pays taxes to putin’s ruzzia, that is exactly why I rather carry a Spyderco Slyzs Bowie , or PM2, Shaman, TRM Neutron 2, Quiet Carry Drift or some other knife from my collection in my pocket any day. Great video as always, Nick!
I know we're trying to show everything on video here but its honestly a lot easier just to assemble both bearing races in each handle and sandwich the knife standing up lol it's about a 5 minute affair
Love the video If you're ever looking for that kind of knife just go to Recon-1 Also you're leaving me scratching my head about something your Willing spend $1100 G&G Hawk knife that is 7075 Aluminum and Shirogorov Is Made out of titanium I feel like we're talking about oranges and apples I see a lot of Ford trucks Broke down on the side of the road But you rarely see Toyota 7075 aluminum is not corrosion resistance I'm sorry give me the titanium all day Love the video keep up the great work
As an owner of an original Shiro F3 I have to admit they are NOT the only game in town now. There is a Chinese brand called Green Thorn. Those guys have been specializing in Shiro knock-offs for quite some time already. Their quality is really high, with real titanium, real M390, and great action. They are not 100% equal to authentic Shiros in terms of fit-and-finish, but pretty close. They are ground very thin, cut like crazy, go in price of ZT knives, while are made much better than, for example, ZT0452CF I owned. So, I did buy my Shiro F3 + their disassembly tool for those fancy bits to support Shiros, but since than got like 10 different Green Thorns. For some Shiro models, like F3NS, or Pero, or Kami Green Thorn is actually the only option to get those designs, as the original models were limited additions, which sucks, so it's great to have this option at least.
they are also stealing designs from strider, chris reeve and they even have a clone of the we buster, which is almost as expensive as the original for some reason. not cool
@@TH-cam-Censorship-Police yes, your're right. That's why I only buy Shiro clones from them, and only if they do not put original Shiro logo on it. Although, I must also confess I'm no fan of Chris Reeve, Strider or Hinderer desigs. I personally think that Shiro F3NS is the best EDC of all times. The fact that Shiros made so little of those before discontinuing, and made tham so insanely expensive - that's what really is not cool. So I'm kind of happy Green Thorn made its nock-off of this design. It ended up spending much more time in my pocket, than my Spydercos, or even my original F3.
Not challenging. Asking for enlightenment. Why use oil? When I've used oil, it gets migrates a lot just in reassembly. I'm a rookie and find H1 Super Lube so much cleaner/easier/longer lasting. (Venturing a guess at my own question: while shorter lived, it's smoother than grease because it's thinner, but when I've actually done both, I don't think I detected a noticeable difference.)
That’s bullshit… it’d be different if you could send it in and have that service done- I didn’t realize when I bought one I was taking on such a cleaning chore
But an Oz Roosevelt, 2 plain small pieces of titanium and a plane small piece of steel blade, is value at $900…OK?! I think the point of good reviewing shouldn’t be your personal subjective opinion and should be somewhat objective. Saying wine is bad because it’s red and you don’t like red wine…well that’s no useful opinion at all.
Stupid.. lol....maybe....... but DAM if they don't make the look of the knife!!!! THO I suppose all knife makers that use " stupid " hardware now that I'm thinking of it.... they all look pretty AWESOME!!!!! a little something that makes them stand alone in a other wise boring world!!!
My god what a nightmare, how loose fish eggs became a good idea in knives is beyond me. I must be missing something. Hats-off to Nick for hacking his way through this dense mangrove forest.
You get an 'A' for effort. You worked very hard on that knife. Your patience is considerable.
Yes toddlers require water. Excellent advice! I think you’re a natural father Nick. Get after it.
What are they, plants?
Only on the Nick Shabazz YT channel will you ever hear the words dehydrated toddler and it actually be funny 😆
FYI nick you can put painters tape or electrical tape on a bit driver which will help not scratch surfaces. Also paper towels
I'm proud of that man for daily driving a Shiro.
I usually rotate between a Shiro (Bio now, this one got sold yesterday) Herman Mantis (timascus inlay, damacore) and an Ultimate Custom Malibu.

I don't know why I was surprised that Nick made a CGP Grey reference, but I appreciated it nonetheless.

This is a marvelous EDC piece indeed!
The words “dehydrated toddler” sufficiently provide my mind with such great imagery 😂 freakin classic Nick

Can't wait till I can finally get a Shiragorov into my collection!🤞🙏🤞
I promise, you won't regret it or feel the tiniest bit of buyer's remorse! Shirogorov knives are (in my opinion) the finest folding knives out there!
I have 2 young kids 8 and 5. And yes, they do often want water.
With Nick's octagon reference CGP has hit the big time.
We need to get you some hollow grind flat head screw drivers.
I approve of this proposition

Ursus is budget line. A helpful way to remember what NL means is iNLay. Hope that helps

Apparently the newest Hati has a captive pivot. Just got one literally tonight, but honestly still don’t want to mess with it 😅
indeed, hati Gen3
the new F95T Gen 4 too, along with captive body screw

I needed to hear that analogy of the dehydrated toddler. It really made me laugh.
45° tweezers w a latex coating on the tips. Would be less likely the bearing to slide out

I love the Shirogorov screws!
"All the balls are in place" - words to live by.
I saw the damaged penny in the thumbnail and thought omg there's going to be a disaster. I should have had more faith!!
This video had more tension and suspense than most Hollywood movies do
How does it smell?
The blade style os perfect for my taste any suggestions on cheaper options

For me, the big difference is uniqueness: The Hawk offers something not findable elsewhere. Shirogorov now makes another excellent Framelock.
I'm definitely i'm Same page I agree with that
Still easier disassembly than an axis bar style lock
I have a very nice Shirogorov/RJM collaboration on my desk for a TH-cam review, but I’m very glad I don’t do disassemblies for my reviews!
There's two screws that can be adjusted with a variety of commonplace items, how is that not straightforward?
